We recently shared this video on our IG profile. For some reason it never made it across to FB, so I thought we would share it here 🤠

Although staying at Playa Mina for the duration of our Costa Rican road trip sounded more tempting by the minute, we knew we had to “keep on trucking” if we wanted to see & do more incredible things!🗺

We packed up our secluded camp & started off down the coast once again, this time landing in Ostional - one of the smallest villages in Costa Rica & one of the world’s main sea turtle nesting beaches.

Thanks to recommendations from ioverlander.com we stayed at Gilbert’s Campground. Gilbert was a quiet, humble, almost monk-like man, who knew more about sea turtles than we know about probably anything.🐢

The dark sands of this unique beach created quite the contrast against the bright blue skies, which later gave way to a crashing thunderstorm overnight (lovely camping weather😳😅). By daybreak though, the rain had moved on & the local dogs had moved in for their independent little morning walks.🐶

Watching the dogs wait for each other & set off to explore together was one of our favorite morning activities!🥰🐾

Let’s go for a spin!🌀😉

After waking up to the soothing sounds of the ocean & a few birds chirping, we set out to explore our little slice of Heaven.

We discovered a short, much-steeper-than-we-realized hiking trail that led to a “mirador” (lookout) and the views of the jagged coastline & icy blue water did NOT disappoint!

Another thing we can’t forget to mention is that the night before, we saw bioluminescence in the water!😯 Have you ever seen this phenomenon?!

We could have easily stayed at Playa Mina for forever, & still to this day can’t find the words or pictures to do it justice. Sounds like you have to see it for yourself! Just please take us with you!😉

Wrapping up our 3rd day in Costa Rica, we arrived at a secluded beach just in time to catch the magnificent sunset.🌅

After spending a few days exploring the north/central region of Costa Rica, the dirt roads finally gave way to a view of the Pacific Ocean!🌊

We found a tranquil mirador (lookout) point for a picnic lunch. Man, we just THOUGHT the coast was beautiful from up there! Little did we know, our own slice of Heaven on Earth was still waiting for us.🌅

Oh yeah, & our WiFi hotspot started working again, which was awesome since we could finally translate & navigate once again!📲🗺🙌

After an explosive start to the morning (see our last post!) we set off on our next adventure. Don Rafa's Adventure Tour. is home to guided tours through the jungle where you can hike, swim, and trek your way to Catarata (Waterfall) La Leona.

Known for its blue color thanks to stemming from Rincón de la Vieja, La Leona is a beautiful waterfall tucked into a canyon & surrounded by beautiful rock formations. 4WD is required to get to the park & you do have to swim a few times to access the falls. Sign us up for that!🤘

Our guide Juan educated us on all kinds of plants, pointed out the howler monkeys swinging from the branches above, & even let us jump off one of the smaller falls along the way! Stay tuned for the full recap video for footage of that!📹

This day felt exactly like a true taste of Costa Rica!🇨🇷

Rincón de la Vieja Eruption 🌋 28 June 2021

If you followed our story last week, you know we’d planned to visit Rincón de la Vieja, the largest volcano in NW Costa Rica. You also know that our plan was botched as the park was about to wrap up activity for the evening & then was closed the next day.🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️

Well, thank goodness the park was closed because at 5:40 a.m. on June 28, we noticed an oddly thick cloud swirling its way over the treetops.

“¿Que es eso?” We asked, AKA what is that?!

“Volcán,” a local from Don Rafa's Adventure Tour. campground informed us as awe & wonder swept over his face. “It is so special to see this in your lifetime.”

Time seemed to stand still while we followed the locals’ lead on simply basking in silent gratitude at the once-in-a-lifetime experience unfolding before us.

The phreatic eruption launched a dense column of gas, steam, & ash up to 4.2 km (14,000 feet) above sea level.

Talk about an explosive start to your day.

After what felt like a never-ending line of dead ends, we finally arrived at a true piece of Costa Rican paradise.

Don Rafa's Adventure Tour. & campground was JUST what we were looking for. Complete with a beautiful river, fresh banana trees, & so👏much👏more, it was absolutely worth the wait.

You’ll have to check back to see what else unfolds!

They say the hardest climbs lead to the great views, right?!⛰ Our next day in Costa Rica brought our first major hiccup, & then it decided to grace us with several more!🤪😬

Our handy-dandy WiFi router, which gave us access to the suggested routes, campsites, plus the ever-so-necessary Google Translate, developed a SIM card issue & would no longer work. Awesome!📲

Luckily we were close enough to our intended goal for that Sunday afternoon (Parque Nacional Rincón de la Vieja - home to a volcano, hot springs, hiking, wildlife, & more!) that we could follow signs to the park without needing GPS… until we arrived & the park was about to close!🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️ No biggie, we’ll just camp nearby & come back tomorrow! Oh wait, you’re closed on Mondays? Of course you are!😂

Needless to say, we decided to scrap that park from our itinerary & set out to find a campsite. Except once we made it to the closest campground it was closed. And miles later, so was the next one. We finally stumbled upon a little cafe with WiFi (there’s no Starbucks on every corner in the jungle!), refueled with milkshakes, & finally found what we needed— an open campground & offline directions for how to get there!🙌

We set out with refreshed outlooks & had no idea how worth it this whirlwind day would be. Stay tuned!😉

PRO TIP: When traveling in a foreign country, we highly recommend downloading Google Translate for offline use BEFORE your trip!😅

Pick up Nomad America vehicle: ✔️

Now the road trip officially begins! We set off heading north/northwest from San Jose.

We landed at our first campsite, Paso del Pedro, with time to explore the breathtaking Rio Celeste before the sun went down.

🔹Notable for its distinct turquoise color, Rio Celeste is fed by two colorless rivers: the Buenavista River & Sour Creek. Buenavista River carries a large concentration of aluminosilicate particles. Sour Creek, as its name implies, has a high acidity due to volcanic activity. When these two streams mix to form Celeste River, the drop in pH causes the aluminosilicate particles to aggregate and enlarge to a diameter of about 566 nm. These suspended particles produce Mie scattering which gives the river a strong turquoise color.

This was also the first time for either of us to sleep in a rooftop tent!🏕

Have you ever stayed in one?! We’ll share more thoughts on that later. Stay tuned!😉

This is it, family & friends! We’re diving in & reliving our Costa Rican adventure. You’re invited to join the fun!

After arriving in San Jose late, our first morning greeted us with a tranquil little garden oasis at our Airbnb. Our host Juan Pablo graciously picked us some fresh mango & other fruits from the trees right there on the property. This was a nice little appetizer before our first proper Costa Rican breakfast!🌳

One of us had eggs with chorizo— one of us had BEEF TONGUE! Can you guess who had what?!🍳🐮

Stay tuned for more posts & of course the full YouTube video recap once it’s done!📺
