Expertly translated by Mexican kendoka Victor Fernando López Suero, with support from several high-ranking Mexican sensei, this book is available in paperback and e-book versions. BUSHIDO HISTORY COURSE - Starting 4th January, 2024 - Kendo World Patreon

Samurai ethics and way of life (bushido) are viewed with fascination by Japanese and non-Japanese alike. In many ways the reverence of ‘the Way of the warrior’ is glorified nonsense. Some scholars have even described samurai as being no more than ‘valorous butchers’, and beautified notions of samurai morality as being overstated if not totally invented. There is a significant element of truth to this cynical analysis, but it is also believed that there are many aspects of samurai culture which can add to our lives today. People around the world are searching for ethical anchors in an age when honour, integrity, bravery, sincerity, and self-sacrifice for the greater good are virtues hidden by the tidal-wave of political scandal, corruption, crime, and greed. Reinterpretations of bushido are seen as one possible moral anchor. This course will outline the history and components (both fact and fiction) of the seemingly timeless, and in some ways borderless culture of Japan’s samurai warriors.

The course is broken down into eight video modules, the details of which are below. After each video there are some homework assignments either based on the content of the video or for you to do your own research. These assignments are purely voluntary and are there for you to do if you would like to further your understanding on the topic of bushido. Please don’t feel obliged to do them. Should you submit these homework assignments, they’ll be checked by the Kendo World team and feedback given to you after.

The video modules will be released on the 4th of each month from January to August 2024. These will only be available to Patrons on the top-level Daimyo Tier.
