Paul Miller | Vine Memorial

Paul Miller is an award-winning restaurateur and owner of Gr8 Plate Hospital-ity, which operates The Union Kitchen (five locations), Jax Grill (two locations), Passerella (two locations), and Vine Memorial — a brand-new wine bar concept that opened in the Memorial area in late 2023. Beyond his professional achievements, Miller is a family man and sports enthusiast. He graduated from Purdue University, where he lettered in football and wrestling, with a BS in Restaurant, Hotel, Institutional and Tourism Management degree. He cherishes spending time with his wife, Doris, and their children, actively participating in their school functions and projects. His love for sports is evident in his unwavering (and patient) support for the Houston Astros, Rockets, and Texans.

Youval Meicler | Texas Mattress Makers & Living Designs Furniture

Youval arrived in the U.S. when he was 21 and quickly found his path in the mattress and furniture industry. Working his way from the bottom, he learned every facet of the business and what it takes to be successful. Today, he enjoys sharing his passion for sleep and furniture design with his children, Noah, Rachael, Sarah, and Dean who now work alongside him in the business. When he’s not at the factory or speaking with customers, you can find him in his backyard with his wife and two dogs or loving on his 3 grandchildren (with the 4th arriving this November). Youval’s passion for people is what makes him a success because he truly cares for the community where he lives and works in.

Brad Coleman | SafeWay Driving

For generations, Brad’s family has lived in the Memorial area, starting with his grandfather Don Coleman, a former Memorial High School Basketball coach. Growing up Brad followed this path, playing basketball, but at the age of 13 he discovered his true passion: racing go-karts. Over the years, this love developed into a full-fledged career for Brad, as he became a professional NASCAR driver. Unexpectedly, Brad’s racing career pushed him to develop a new passion: teaching teens to be better drivers. Now, Brad lives in Houston with his wife and kids and is the proud owner and CEO of SafeWay Driving.

Sam Khader | Dimassi’s Mediterranean Buffet

Sam Khader is President and CEO of Dimassi’s Mediterranean Buffet. He is a graduate of The Conrad Hilton Hotel & Restaurant Management program at the University of Houston with an emphasis on Food & Beverage and has been immersed in the restaurant business his entire life. He proudly took over the operation from his father, Mike, in 2008 and has since grown it into one of the largest Mediterranean chains in Texas. Dimassi’s now has 25 locations across the nation. Sam and wife, Sara, also own and operate multiple Shipley Do-Nuts. Sam has two sons, Zane and Ru, who attend Rummel Creek Elementary.

The Bridal Extravaganza Show, the largest bridal planning showcase in the U.S., will return to the George R. Bonjour! Fancy Nancy is ready for the spotlight! Main Street Theater’s production of Fancy Nancy The Musical based on the popular Fancy Nancy books by Jane O’Connor, with book and lyrics by Susan Di Lallo, and
music and lyrics by Danny Abosch, opens June 15 and plays through July 28. The production will be at MST’s Midtown location at 3400 Main Street, 77002 at the MATCH and is recommended for Pre-Kindergarten and older.

Annabelle Brasserie , a Berg Hospitality Group original concept, presents St. Tropez Week, a celebration of summer’s ultimate beverage-rosé! Guests will experience the sophisticated glamour of the French Riveria with week-long specials and events highlighting the blushing summer sip.

A special menu of select rosé varieties by the glass and bottle will be offered from Cotes de Provence to Cotes-du-Rhone. Daily food specials complement the selections including oysters shucked live at the table with rosé wine mignonette.

Jonathan’s the rub officially opened its third location in the historical East End (2929 Navigation) featuring an expansive patio and bar area. Jonathan’s brought its current extensive menu including seafood, burgers, steaks, Italian and more – and has also added a variety of true Brooklyn-style pizzas to the mix, cooked in an open concept area showcasing their new pizza oven.
 
“I grew up with authentic Brooklyn-style pizza, and we can’t wait to introduce it into the menu at this new location,” said Levine. “We have been working on it over the last few months to perfect it for the opening.”

The Coushatta Powwow is a family event held annually, attracting tribes from around the country including Coushatta, Alabama, Seminole, Creek, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Pawnee, Apache, Navaho, Sioux and others, along with thousands of spectators. It’s a cultural celebration focused on common bonds of community and ancestry, and families are invited to attend! 

The Coushatta Tribe 27th Annual Powwow
will be held on June 7-8 at The Pavilion at Coushatta, Kinder, LA.

Dear SBISD Families,
As of noon today, about 70 percent of our campuses still remain without power. This means our teams are unable to run the necessary checks on our mechanical, HVAC, technology, plumbing, food service and other systems. Additionally, a significant number of our staff and families remain without power.

Thus, we will NOT have school tomorrow, Monday, May 20, 2024.

Offices and Campuses Remain Closed – Certain staff should report to work Monday as noted below.

All district offices and campuses remain closed and offline, including playgrounds, Spark Parks, and secondary school sports courts, fields and tracks.

Grounds, custodial, facilities and planning and construction staff, and technology staff should report as usual. Technology staff should confirm location with their supervisor. School Nutrition Services office staff and managers should await instructions from their supervisor regarding reporting to work Monday.

High School Tests and Graduation Reminders

As noted in our message yesterday, our high school teachers and administrators will work with students regarding assignments and tests. No student will be penalized as a result of these extenuating circumstances. Graduation practice updates will be communicated by campus principals. As of now, graduations scheduled for next weekend will proceed as planned.

May Regular Board Meeting Update

Given the recent devastating storms and resulting widespread power outages, including a continued power outage at Memorial High School, the Spring Branch ISD Board of Trustees Meeting scheduled for Monday, May 20, 2024, will be moved to Stratford High School, 14555 Fern Drive, Houston, TX 77079, in the Auditorium, and will begin at 6:00 p.m. on May 20, 2024. The meeting will not be livestreamed but will be recorded.

All Special Presentations previously planned for the May Board Meeting, including the Retiree recognition and reception are cancelled as part of this meeting and will be rescheduled for another date.
