It's the last episode of Teaching Tangents, we are retiring the show! As we explain in the video, logically flowing from our previous episode about completing 2021 and creating 2022, we looked at Teaching Tangents, and decided it's time to close the show as it stands.

School only takes you so far when it comes to tackling life’s big questions. Join us on wild tangents as psychology teacher James D’Souza and brand strategist Willem van der Horst delve into one of those complex questions in every episode. If you’ve ever asked yourself a question like “Is it pointless to aim lower than 100%?”, or “Do I need a purpose in life?”, and enjoy random inspiration, then this is for you.

I've seen a version of this screenshot of an Adage article about Coca-Cola's review that has been going on for nearly 10 months. Of course, the immediate irony being that 200 people working globally in hundreds of meeting - and that's at Coca-Cola, you can multiply that by at least 4 for the big network contenders, and add all the people from other independent agencies, and the final numbers don't exactly scream of "agility and speed and creativity."

As some of you may know, the length of agency-client relationships has become shorter; there are few quant studies on the topic, but this paper from the AAAA quoting The Bedford Group, states they went from an average of 7.2 years in 1984, to 5.3 years in 1997, and today "it is thought to be less than three years."

Of course it's not quant but analysing the ins and outs, I think of the efforts Omnicom went through creating We Are Unlimited for McDonald's in 2017, to lose the account less than three years later in 2019.

Those numbers don't mention the time and effort to get into the relationship in the first place. I'm reminded of a scene in the TV series The West Wing (best show ever), where character Leo McGarry (played by John Spencer, RIP), explains to candidate Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits) that if won, after the year-long exhausting campaign, the US presidency is not 4 years long. The actual governing is rather about 18 months long. The rest is getting into it, midterms campaigns, and reelection campaign.

With that story in mind, seeing that agency-client relationships take about as long to get into as the White House, but last about a year less, I wonder how much actual brand-building and marketing the winner will get to do. I wonder what the time frame is like. One global campaign, maybe two? A few opportunities for local innovation and awards? And reassurance the winner can plaster the world in the usual required staples, whatever they are. I may sound cynical, but I think it's also valuable to be realistic about what pitching for this kind of huge global account really entails. And regardless of the answer there may not be another choice for the big networks involved than to keep going in order to, well, keep going, as it were.

There's also another sentence in the article that caught my attention:

"Coca-Cola’s review represents a major agency consolidation that is expected to result in significant agency fee savings."

Call me cynical, but I also think this seems more important than the "agility and speed and creativity" mentioned in the CMO quote.
