Afro Elegance: Kings and Queens Black Tie Affair
The event that brought the beauty of African culture, art, and traditions in celebration of the Black History Month at The Newark Museum of Art

Newark, NJ - February 11, 2023 – For the first time, AfroTaco and FORSA! Media Group partnered with The Newark Museum of Art to host Afro Elegance: Kings and Queens Black Tie affair that celebrated different expressions of African Art, music and food.
According to the organizations, the goal was to celebrate Black History Month in the “most honorable and elegant way” but it quickly became a multidisciplinary showcase of African culture that combined fashion, music, food and special participation from the UNESCO project ResiliArt Angola, a program whose mission revolves around the social and economic empowerment of artists. Artwork of Angolan artists Jorsanady, Davi and Josue Dombele, Uolof Griot, Alcides Malakaia and F***y Bienga of the DRC were exhibited in the Museum at the event
“Events like these are a direct extension of our mission at The Newark Museum of Art. We want to spark the imagination of artists around the world, for the first time, this year we have a very special exhibition of Angolan art that can now compliment the ongoing African exhibitions of pieces that date the beginning of the twentieth century,” said Silvia Filippini Fantoni (Deputy Director for Learning and Engagement) and Darryl Dwayne Walker (Manager of Community Engagement). “We want the community to think of us as a wonderful place to go.”
FORSA Media Group President and CEO and The Newark Museum of Art’s Music Curator Marcy DePina played a key role for this event to become a reality. “This event is AfroTaco’s CEO’s Cliff Mills brainchild. It is particularly symbolic because this is also Black History Month and we want to highlight the elegance of the African contribution to the world. Having in mind that we are in the biggest museum in the state, we had to produce something equally grandiose. That’s how this collaboration came about. For the first time we are combining different arts, music and food that all represent African and its diaspora. It is a fantastic celebration of Newark as an international city and I am proud to produce an event that showcases our diverse cultures.”
The success of the event was present in the smiles of the two hundred attendees that were able to appreciate the bridge established between international and local artists, such as the jewelry and fashion designers Kay Luke and Johan Alain. The vibrant dance floor was led by DJ MD, DJ Keilo and DJ Nayah, Brother Jerome also surprised everyone with his energetic performance featuring African drumming and dance. Both the African Art and Mediterranean galleries were open for visitors and The Newark Museum of Arts Associate Curator of the Arts of Global Africa, Henone Girma was on site for guided tours.
Adding to the various expressions of African art, the event also featured culinary arts with the cuisine of one of New Jersey’s most popular food trucks, AfroTaco created by chef Cliff Mills’ and his team. “I believe that events like this one are very important for the local African businesses as well as the artists. We bring the community together, spread our business and collaborate with our culture,” said Cliff Mills.
Representing the ResiliArt Angola program was the executive director of the American Schools of Angola, Marcos Agostinho, who was in attendance and emphasized the importance of such initiatives for the social and economic empowerment of the artists, especially after the pandemic. “A cooperation of such kind can only solidify the relations between Angola and Newark. Mr. Agostinho played a pivotal role in the newly to be formed Sister City initiative between Luanda and Newark, led by City of Newark Deputy Mayor and Director of International Relations, Ligia de Freitas. In addition, dignitaries including Newark’s First Lady Linda Jumah Baraka and HE Ambassador Augusta Bessa, Consul General of Angola to New York It was a very historic moment for the artistic movement of both Angola and Newark.”
In alignment with the recognition of the contributions made by African descendants in Newark, the event honored entrepreneur and New York Times Best Selling author Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche, with the AfroExcellence Award for 2023. Ms. Aliche is a Newark native that champions financial literacy and has helped over 2 million people to attain financial stability. She agrees that “these types of events can contribute to the sustainability of the artists, allowing for the artistic community to keep on creating.
The event was sold out and donated a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Newark YMCA and The Newark Museum of Art.

Founded in 1909, the Newark Museum of Art is the largest art and education institution in the state of New Jersey and one of the most influential museums in the country. Its renowned global art collections, supported by significant holdings of science, technology and natural history, rank 12th among North America’s art museums. The Museum is dedicated to artistic excellence, education and community engagement with an overarching commitment to broadening and diversifying arts participation. As it has for over a century, the Museum responds to the evolving needs and interests of the diverse audiences it serves by providing exhibitions, programming and resources designed to enrich people’s lives.

On Saturday, June 25, all roads will lead to the iconic Sport Newark and Benfica (119 Paris St., Newark, NJ) for a beautiful presentation of local musical talent, in what will be the first edition of the Ironbound Rock Festival.

All the bands Mind Trigger (Metal-Core); inGAW (Heavy Metal); the Leopard Monks (Alternative Rock) and the Troubleman (Rock, Ska, Reggae) are local talent.

The Festival will not stand only by promoting local talent as a percentage of the profits will revert to the nonprofit East Ward Community Center, located in the same neighborhood. The humanitarian organization whose mission involves feeding the most deprived throughout the week is led by Lígia Freitas, Deputy Mayor of the City of Newark.
