The number of medication errors related to drugs for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children younger than 20 years reported to US poison centers increased almost 300% from 2000 through 2021. More than half of the errors involved children accidentally taking or being given the medication twice, according to an analysis in Pediatrics of nearly 88 000 reports involving ADHD treatments as the first-ranked substance. Other common errors were taking or being given someone else’s medication or using the wrong medication.

Most cases happened at home, and the majority did not require treatment in a health care facility. However, 4.2% of cases did result in a serious medical outcome such as agitation, tremors, and seizures.

The preventable increase in ADHD medication errors, which track with the rise in ADHD diagnoses, should signal that “more attention should be given to patient and caregiver education” and phasing in packaging that makes it easier to keep track of doses, the researchers wrote.

Maui Under Attack...

At least 36 people have been killed in catastrophic wildfires that are raging across the Hawaiian island of Maui. Much of Lahaina, a tourist and economic hub of 9,000 people, has been destroyed and hundreds of families have been displaced.

More than 270 structures have been impacted, including several historical sites that date back to the 1800s. Locals and visitors are struggling to leave as power and communication services have been knocked out in parts of the island. One resident described the scene as "apocalyptic" while another said it looks like "something out of a horror movie." Most of the fires on Maui — fueled in part by violent winds from Hurricane Dora churning around 800 miles away — have not yet been contained.

New Rules on Artificial Intelligence:

The Biden administration announced new rules Wednesday banning some US investment companies in advanced technology industries in China. The new restrictions, which notably restrict investments in Chinese artificial intelligence, are meant to prevent American finances and knowledge on AI from flowing into China at a moment of heightened tensions with Beijing. The restrictions also prevent investments in semiconductors and quantum computing technology.

An Ecuadorian presidential candidate known for speaking up against corruption was shot and killed Wednesday at a political rally in the capital, an attack that comes amid a wave of startling violence in the South American country.

Local media reported Villavicencio, a former lawmaker who had been polling at 7.5% and a leading anti-corruption campaigner, had been shot at a campaign event in Quito. Videos on social media appear to show the candidate walking out of the event surrounded by guards. The video then shows Villavicencio entering a white truck followed by gunfire.

President Guillermo Lasso confirmed the assassination of Fernando Villavicencio and suggested organized crime was behind his slaying. Villavicencio was one of eight candidates in the Aug. 20 presidential vote, though not the frontrunner.

Niger's armed forces have deployed reinforcements to the capital to prepare for a potential invasion, a military source told CNN today, just hours after the military junta running the country refused to give up power. A convoy of about 40 pick-up trucks arrived Sunday evening, bringing troops from other parts of the country to reassure a nervous public and prepare for a potential battle. Niger has been thrown into political chaos since last month when President Mohamed Bazoum was seized by members of the presidential guard before national institutions were shut down and protesters from both sides took to the streets. It remains unclear whether a diplomatic solution to the crisis will be reached or if Nigerien authorities will resort to the use of force.

Oregon drivers are now allowed to pump their own gas after the state lifted a ban dating back to 1951. The new law signed Friday went into effect immediately, leaving New Jersey as the only state in the US where service station customers can't pump their own fuel. The full service requirement has historically been a contentious topic in Oregon and New Jersey, with reasons given for sticking with the old mandate ranging from flammable liquid safety to preserving the jobs of gas station attendants. The new law, however, does not phase out full service completely in Oregon's 16 most populous counties.
