Big wave surfer has made his name dropping in on the largest, most dangerous waves this world has to offer.

Chloé Zhao is the first woman of colour and only the second woman ever to win the award for Best Director at the Oscars for the film Nomadland, which won Best Picture.

AND she went to the event in trainers like a boss.

At Avenue we understand videographer is a different discipline than working with a while production crew, and that’s where we stand out, but we still recognise the importance of narrative.

There aren’t a huge amount of female videographers out there and we’d love to see that change.

Film recommendation: Sound of Metal.

Sound of Metal focuses on a drummer named Ruben () losing his hearing while on tour with his girlfriend Lou (). The sudden loss of hearing leads him to stay in a deaf community led by Joe (), where he learns to accept the loss of his hearing.

Sound of Metal makes you incredibly aware of what you are hearing as well as seeing; not just the conversations but the background haze we hear everyday but pay little attention to.

Writer and director Darius Marder (who also wrote The Place Beyond The Pines) worked for around 13 years to bring Sound of Metal to the big screen and had to argue for the need for open captioning. “Many and most people told me I wouldn’t be able to sell the film” Darius said. “You can’t do that, no one will watch it, it will ruin the movie”.

This film has highlighted the need for open captioning accessibility for people who cannot hear. Even for the hearing audience, it only serves to heighten the experience.

‘Be There, Be Present’ is a documentary film by Greg Dennis.

It’s May 2020. The UK has been in lockdown for over a month leaving many people feeling isolated and anxious. Photographer Nick Pumphrey turned to where he feels most at home - the sea. In May he dedicated to taking his camera in the sea for every dawn of the month, and sharing his experience each morning with ten photographs on Instagram.

His ritual was called .

Now spreading far and wide, Dawn Days has turned into a movement inspiring different corners of the world.

Videographer Will Nangle went with Whitelines Snowboarding Magazine's Andrew Duthie and Finnish snowboarder Enni Rukajärvi to the north of Norway for some splitboarding and to stay in a converted American school bus with The Nomads Family.

They removed everything inside the bus to convert it into a moving house and hostel. Inside the bus, they designed a proper bedroom, a bathroom, toilets, a kitchen, a living room and enough bunk beds to welcome up to 8 guests. This family of adventurers would move from one country to another, and meet different locals and discover their culture.

‘Royal Motel Room’ is a photographic journey of an experimental surf trip with French surfer Margaux Arramon-Tucoo around the East coast of Australia filmed through the lens of a Super8 camera.

Step into Mark Boyd's stomping ground, a place he calls home.

Thurso is renowned for its short, powerful, hollow waves. The area is an ideal spot for cold water surfing. Mark Boyd is 33 years old and lives in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland.

Growing up on the Moray Firth Coast, Boyd learnt the art and craft of surfing and went on to take consecutive titles at the National Surfing Championships in ‘18 and ‘19 to become Scottish Champion.

‘It’s Home’ is a collection of short films made by Avenue videographer Will Nangle on humans of Scotland who appreciate what is right on their doorstep.
