Women from Nasarawa State once again demonstrated on Tuesday in the state capital of Lafia over what they perceived to be unfair treatment of David Ombugadu, the PDP's nominee for governor of the region.

The Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal had on October 2 sacked Governor Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress and announced Ombugadu as the winner.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, Sule went to the Court of Appeal, where he was proclaimed the state's victor in the gubernatorial election.

Speaking with reporters in Lafia on Tuesday, Hanatu John, the head of the protesting women's groups, questioned why the state's election results would not recognise the candidate who received the most votes as the victor. She claimed that democracy was based on popular vote.

The 67-year-old governor passed away early on Wednesday in Germany, following a protracted illness.

Before he passed away, Akeredolu served as governor for a second term and was a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and former Attorney General of Ondo State.

In June, the governor's ill condition required him to be airlifted overseas for treatment. After spending months abroad, he returned to Nigeria in September and settled in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

The Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) in Rivers State has reopened for business, in line with the federal government's pledge to produce refined goods at the plant by December 2023.

The four refineries in Nigeria, located in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna, had a combined processing capacity of 445,000 barrels per day (bpd) when they were first shut down in 2019. However, maintenance issues caused the refineries to become unusable.

In August, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), during an inspection tour of the PHRC Ltd. plant, confirmed the refinery’s plans to resume operations by December.

20/12/2023

Israeli troops and Hamas fighters engaged in fierce gunbattles on the streets of Gaza’s second-biggest city on Wednesday as the United Nations delayed a vote on a bid to boost aid deliveries to the Palestinian enclave facing a humanitarian disaster.

According to the Palestinian enclave's health ministry, Israel's campaign to eliminate Hamas militants was the cause of the Oct. 7 slaughter, which left the coastal enclave in ruins, brought widespread starvation and homelessness, and killed almost 20,000 Gazans.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the conflict will not end until Iran-backed Hamas releases the last 129 captives it is holding in Gaza. The Islamist organisation is destroyed, despite demands from abroad to refrain from killing innocent people.

A United Nations Security Council vote to set up aid deliveries was delayed by another day on Tuesday as talks continued to try and avoid a third U.S. veto of action over the two-month-long Israel-Hamas war.
