Just before his trip to the Andamans, Lord Mayo invited the ex Nabab of Awadh Wajid Ali Shah to the Government house of Calcutta. The Nawab accepted the invitation under the impression that the Governor General wished to befriend him. But when he visited the Governor General at the Government House, Lord Mayo wished to humiliate the Nabab and climbed the throne of the Governor General in front of Wajid Ali Shah. Utterly disappointed and humiliated, the Nawab left the building immediately without uttering a word. Someone asked him why he was in such a hurry to leave. The Nawab answered, " I came to visit a friend, but I found out that he was dead". Everyone thought that the Nawab was talking poetically. After all, Wajid Ali Shah was known for being a poet.
