SO SAD
12 NUP SUPPORTERS REMANDED FOR WEARING BERETS....
The General Court Martial has remanded 12 men to Kitalya Prison over allegedly wearing red berets, which the prosecution says are preserved for the armed forces.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) party supporters were remanded yesterday after denying charges of unauthorised wearing of uniforms.
The accused include Muhammed Muzamiru, Ronald Kayiwa, Umar Shafik, David Ojit, Junior Amanya, Godfrey Singoma, Alioni Anyo, Maxwell Okello, Shakuru Matovu, Hazard Kayondo, Sharif Nkalubo and Akram Kato.
The prosecution alleges that the accused on November 18, while in Kampala and Masaka, were found wearing red berets, resembling those worn by the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). The seven-member panel, chaired by Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti entered a plea of not guilty against the accused. The offence attracts a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment, on conviction.
"When you wear red berets, it leaves other people threatened, thinking you are a soldier," Gutti told the accused.
The accused, who are represented by lawyer Medard Sseggona, complained about the manner in which they were treated during arrest.
The accused, who are also facing charges of disobedience of lawful orders (presidential orders) on social distancing placed to mitigate spread of the coronavirus, claim they were not allowed to access their lawyers. However, Gutti said they will be allowed to access them while in prison.
"Today's army is disciplined. That is why you can access your client even at Makindye Military Police barracks," he said.
State prosecutor Maj. Elly Byaruhanga informed court that the matter is still under investigation and asked court to adjourn the case.
Background
