As the 2023-2024 school year wraps up, there's a lot to celebrate in Palm Beach County!

Four local schools (๐‹๐š๐ค๐ž ๐—ช๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ก ๐‡๐ข๐ ๐ก ๐’๐œ๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฅ, ๐—ช๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐จ๐œ๐š ๐‡๐ข๐ ๐ก ๐’๐œ๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฅ, ๐ˆ๐ง๐ฅ๐ž๐ญ ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž ๐‡๐ข๐ ๐ก ๐’๐œ๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฅ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐’๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก ๐“๐ž๐œ๐ก ๐€๐œ๐š๐๐ž๐ฆ๐ฒ) have successfully integrated the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) Program into their Allied Health medical academies. With 131 students participating and 30 seniors graduating, the results are impressive.

A remarkable 83 students took the state certification exam, achieving a 96% pass rate. All graduating seniors have been accepted to college, and 14 of them received scholarships to support their education and career in the mental health field.

This event, held on May 4th, 2024, brought together around 1500 people from all over Palm Beach County. It was a vibrant celebration of community and connection, embodying the mission of the EJS Project to build and empower tomorrowโ€™s leaders.

Male eating disorders are often overlooked and underdiagnosed, leaving many men suffering in silence due to societal stigma. The pressure to appear strong, both physically and mentally, exacerbates this hidden struggle. Many men fear judgment and ridicule, preventing them from seeking the help they desperately need.

My goal is to break the stigma and shame that prevent cisgendered men with eating disorders and childhood trauma from accessing the behavioral health care they deserve. By addressing these issues, we can encourage men to seek help, obtain accurate diagnoses, and receive the effective treatment they need.

The Desired Group partnered with the City of Riviera Beachโ€™s Parks and Recreation Department to produce the 2nd Annual National Poetry Month Youth Summit. Poetry Summit founder Desiree Reavis is also the Inaugural Ambassador of Spoken Word to The Palm Beach Cultural Council and it was her passion to make this yearโ€™s celebration extraordinary.

In addition to adding a community component to the event, the Huntt-LaFrance Charitable Trust also contributed $3000 in college scholarships awards for participants. Numerous non-profit organizations and community partners were on hand to offer resources to parents and students about programs and services available in Palm Beach County.

A key focus for both organizations is to understand adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and complex trauma. They recognize the impact of chronic exposure to abuse, neglect, and environmental stressors on individuals' mental health.

Almost half of all Americans live in an area experiencing a mental health workforce shortage while the demand for services provided by psychiatrists, therapists, counselors and social workers is increasing.

Florida has been especially hard-hit by this crisis and when people canโ€™t access the mental health services they need, it can be hard for them to focus, to function and even get out of bed.

โ€œWhen it comes to mental health treatment, we are seeing an increase in the severity and the magnitude of youth being diagnosed with more severe cases of depression, anxiety, and other disorders,โ€ said Andres Torrens, Chief Program Officer of Families First.

BeWellPBC has been at the forefront of solution-oriented action and in July 2019, they hosted a Think Tank with seven local universities/colleges, School District of Palm Beach County, Childrenโ€™s Services
Council, Southeast Florida Behavioral Health Network, and Palm Health Foundation to tackle workforce concerns like shortages in the behavioral health field and lack of diversity.

For some of our youth this back-to-school season is a milestone, their first year in middle or high school. When facing a new journey, we as humans have bouts of fear and uncertainty, in other wordsโ€ฆ.Anxiety.
