In this edition we will talk about a few dark horses who can completely change the dynamics of your fpl team.

Most people like premium forwards and midfielders before they even think of defenders. Purely based on statistics, premium defenders are the best bets no matter how good a midfielder or forward you can pick for your team. A Mohammed Salah might give you 260 points but he will cost you 13.5 price points, whereas Robertson and Dias will cost you 13 price points and the returns will be North of 310. This does not mean picking Salah is a wrong choice, but before filling up on your mids and fwds pick your defs.

Here are some of the dark horses of this season or at least for the first half of the season who can solve a lot of problems for you..

John Stones

Unfortunately, Laporte has picked up an injury which means John Stones is more or less guaranteed to partner Dias for most games. Stone will cost just 5.5 and the rock-solid performance of CIty means he could become the Joel Matip of FPL this season. Pick him as your 4th or 5th choice Def (if you are playing a back 5) and enjoy the clean sheets.

Christian Eriksen

Eriksen for 6.5 is a massive deal given he is more or less likely to start for Manchester United. And given his superior quality on dead-balls expect good returns.

Lisandro Martínez

Forget the likes of Neco Williams, Martinez for 4.5 is a massive deal for the fpl managers. Under ETH, United's defense is surely going to be better than the previous season, and even if they can keep 12-14 clean-sheets, you are looking at north of 100 points.

Anthony Martial

If you are looking for a budget forward and can not trust the newly promoted ones, Martial looks a good bet. For 7 price points, Martial, a guaranteed starter has been at the heart of every United attack during the pre-season.

Jack Grealish

With ownership of less than 6%, Grealish can be your differential this season. A proper number 9 ahead of him, no Sterling, and no preseason for Foden means Grealish is more likely to start this season regularly. For just 7 price points, he is a great asset to have.

Here are the Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth additions to the picks list for the upcoming season.

LEWIS DUNK (BHA, Def, 4.5)

Dunk for 4.5 is a very good bargain. In his last three FPL seasons, he has registered 92, 130, and 128 points. Lewis is also known for scoring goals from set pieces and with Graham Potter's solid outings against the smaller teams, we can expect around 12-14 CS this season.

JOACHIM ANDERSEN (CRY, Def, 4.5)

Andersen provided 4 assists last season but the a-underlying numbers are even better for the defender. He made the most accurate long balls per 90 than any other player in the league last season. for this price range, he beats almost every other defender.

ANTHONY GORDON (Everton, Mid, 5.5)

Richarlison leaving for Spurs opens the doors for Gordon to take even more prominent role for Everton this season. Expect him to play in a more attacking role if Everton does not go for a like-for-like replacement for Richarlison, which looks unlikely as of now. A 100-point player with 4 goals and 3 assists in a disaster season looks really interesting and can become a dark horse this season.

BRUNO GUIMARAES (Newcastle, Mid, 6.0)

Since his Bournemouth days, Eddie Howe has been known for getting the best out of his attacking players. Bruno's previous season's performance was no surprise and with a new and more robust team this season, expect more from the Brazilian. If you are looking for a budget midfielder, Guimares can be a big one.

Here is the second addition to the picks list for the upcoming season.

ALEKSANDAR MITROVIC (Fulham)
Role- Forward
Price- 6.5

Mitrovic under Marco Silva broke all records last season in the Championship. He had the highest xG (35.9) among all players and if that was not impressive enough, he scored 43 goals, outscoring the xG metrics by more than 7 goals!!

Thanks to Marco Silva's attacking style of play, the 27-year-old also registered 7 assists, taking his goals+assists tally to 50!

Many people might point out that he also scored 26 goals in 2019-2020 championship but failed to replicate that [performance the next year in PL. Even though this is true, it was down to injury, Fulham's lack of attacking football in that season. The squad is much better this season and Marco Silva is known for his attacking show. If he stays fit, Aleksander Mitrovic for 6.5 can produce better value for money metrics than the premium forwards this season.

Cons- Difficult opening fixtures.

Just to give you context Harry Kane's best season comprised of 224 points (2016-17) for the initial price of 12.5. i.e. 17.92 points per unit price you spent on him. Ivan Toney cost 6.5 last year and scored 139 points. i.e. 21.38 points per unit price you spent.

*Wilson topped the chart of most chances created (102 overall, 2.6 per 90 mins) in the Championship last season.
*He was the highest 'Assist' provider (19) in the second division of English football last season.
*He also created 18 big chances, 1 less than table-topper Sorba Thomas.

The last time Wilson appeared in PL, he scored 7 goals, 1 assist, and registered 2 CS, with 91 overall points from 1637 mins. At just 6
price points Wilson can be a gem with his dead-ball duties and a brilliant left foot.

Cons- *A difficult opening game against his former club Liverpool.
*Though he had registered 19 assists last season in the championship, the xA was 10.4 which is still the best in the league.
