Trilogy of one dog
A trilogy , using 1 dog in a variety of ways during the course of a job . 1. A mob of cows pushed through electric and ended up next to lucerne paddock. 1 had jumped the fence , no doubt more would follow , in this instance l just left the dog to hold the cattle on the fence next to the gate , without undue pressure , so it was easy for me just to poke her out . 2. The old dog just pokes along with me on the tail , keeping weight without much fuss to take them away . 3 Just using the dogs presence and by positioning him get them to feed nicely out a little gate and once the flow is on , just calling him off totally and letting cows and calves head off as pairs . The same dog , happy to be compliant , do a job on his own or just act as wingman for me , using as much , or as little force as is required .
Just poking along. minding his business
How they go about it, when you cant see them, reveals a lot .
A "get it done" little pup. First look
A short , old video I found of a 7-8 week old pups' first look. l cannot recognise which dog this grew up to be . I can say that I would definitely have kept it though, I like the keenness , the get it done attitude combined with the effort to get them all. He breaks off enough to see the big picture but wants them to come back to me , not fancy , but l like this style of pup for getting jobs done .
The simplest of things can make the day better , a tuck in of the tail and a little bump to keep things rolling , no problem
Old dog makes life easier .
l was just hanging back letting cows pick up their calves at the back before going out the gate . Noticed those cows out the gate were headed left instead of right, and picking up a bit of pace , so kicked the dog out to pull them up and head them back the way we were going.
Tom , with one older dog and a youngster. First work for a mob of wagyu F1 's . he spent 15-20 minutes on them . Goal was to have them handle well enough to file out the horse gate , middle of the southern fence.
A bit older video , bought a little mob of weaners out of south east corner of this paddock and settled them . Then re- sent the dog to grab the rest from north west corner , bring them back , join them up and put them out gate. Then we will take them up and graze them out on the road . Back when feed was a bit more scarce .
Moving some cows from a distance , paddock to paddock via the yards.
An ode to some good old cowdogs , now long gone.
A few years back l was contemplating some old dogs that had helped me through some hard jobs, l wrote down this poem as a tribute to those many dogs that worked hard and long for me .
Old girls got a good feed down the river , time to head back home. A wing of em got wedged under some half fallen down trees and the fence , dog does a nice job of helping them out of it ,
Putting a few cows and a bull down to clean up along the river this morning .
Steep timber country , a horse and a cowdog.
Put 2 mobs together , the blacks had seen a dog , the others not. Once we head up a draw and can not see the dog or all the cattle , it is time to rely that the dog has figured where we are heading , and just sit on our wing and head up . Once in the clear , l will step in again , as the cattle may try to split in the open , show the dog , by command, where we are heading now , and move on in that direction . As much is learned from what you can not see or hear on the camera , as what is . Not brilliant camera work , but portays the job well enough l think .
