If you’re a traveler and have spent some time in and out of hotels, you may have noticed a bible inside of the nightstand. In 1908, a Christian group called Gideon International began providing hotels in the US with free bibles. In the early 2000s almost 95% of hotels provided bedside religious material, however, that number has decreased to 79%.

Have you ever wondered why scrubs are green or blue? We’ve always seen nurses and doctors wearing scrubs and back in the 20th century they would wear white, but that became problematic. The brightness of white would actually blind surgeons for several moments and give them headaches. Therefore, doctors started to wear green and blue scrubs because it was much easier on the eyes and help them concentrate better during surgical procedures.

When someone is under stress, their blink rate will increase. Rapid eye blinking can be a good indicator that someone is either lying, nervous, or anxious about something. The same is true if someone is excited about something. When someone is excited, rapid blinking is the mind’s way of remembering to blink and stay alert to continue looking at whatever excitement is taking place.

Leonardo da Vinci didn’t paint his world-famous work on canvas but on the wall of a monastery dining room in Milan at the tail-end of the 15th century. When renovations in 1652 included adding a doorway to that very wall, that meant removing a significant chunk of the original painting of The Last Supper. Centuries-old replicas show what that section would have looked like, but the original work of da Vinci is a puzzle piece lost to time.

On March 20, 1980, Mount St. Helens experienced a magnitude 4.2 earthquake, and a week later, steam venting started. On May 18, there was a second earthquake (this time of magnitude 5.1), which triggered a collapse of the northern flank of the mountain. The eruption caused the largest known debris avalanche in recorded history, flattening vegetation and buildings over 230 square miles and releasing more than 1.5 million metric tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere.

This is known as the paradox of the heap. A heap of sand is made of many grains of sand. If you only remove one grain, it still remains a heap. You can do this over and over again until just one grain is left. The heap always remained a heap, so that one grain of sand is still a heap. You can also flip this and start off this one grain and continue adding. When do these grains become a heap?

The impressive James Webb telescope has a big task at hand. It’s being made with the hope of being able to see what the universe looked like about a quarter of a billion years, maybe even 100 million years, after the Big Bang when the very first stars and galaxies were created. It plans to be launched on December 18th, 2021. If it works, it will dramatically change how we look at the cosmos.
