This is the shocking moment an alleged drink driver crashed into the Go Local Extra store in Wingate yesterday morning (Friday 1 November)

Footage released by the store today online shows the car losing control as it travelled along North Road East before mounting the pavement and missing a house, parked car and telegraph pole by inches, it then goes into the front of the shop before flipping onto its side and coming to a rest in the middle of the road.

The driver and passenger were both taken to hospital, with the driver arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

A woman from County Durham, whose horse was so malnourished he was too weak to trot, has been disqualified from keeping equines for three years.

Samantha Rush, of Main Road in Bishop Auckland, failed to address the cause of bay c**t Marvel's poor body condition, which a vet said had been going on for many weeks. The horse was lethargic, fighting an infection caused by rain scald, and had painful mouth ulcers.

Rush (DoB 15.03.69) was handed the ban at a sentencing hearing at Peterlee Magistrates Court on 2 September after pleading guilty to causing the horse unnecessary suffering, following an investigation and prosecution by the RSPCA.

Magistrates were told that an RSPCA Inspector had met Rush at the entrance to a field in Pont Road in Leadgate, Consett on 28 February this year after the charity had been sent photographs of a bay horse who looked very underweight.

In her written statement the Inspector said: "Rush told me she knew he was in poor body condition but she had not taken his rug off as she was worried what was underneath.

"She told me she had been giving him haylage and feeding him three times a day. I asked if she had had a vet out and she said no but she had booked an equine dentist to go out on Saturday and I was shown a text message confirming the appointment.

"I was shown a bay pony, rising three years old. I could see he was in poor body condition even though he was wearing two rugs. His spine and hip bones were visible and the rug was angular over them.

"When it was taken off I saw he was in very poor body condition and covered in patches of fur loss along his back and over his face. He was very lethargic and withdrawn in his demeanour."

Rush was told by the Inspector that she wanted to get a vet out to look at the c**t, and this was agreed. The vet who examined him confirmed that Marvel was in a suffering state.

There was a bath in the field for water, which was bone dry and didn't look like it had been used for some time. Rush told the Inspector it was filled daily with water canisters, but she said she didn't have them with her at the time. She was asked if she wanted to sign Marvel over into the care of the RSPCA - to which she agreed - and a transfer of ownership form was completed and signed.

The court was shown written evidence from the vet who examined Marvel at the field and another one who saw him later at a private equine yard. Blood analysis showed he had low red blood cells, calcium and protein, and high white blood cells that were consistent with a horse that was malnourished and fighting infection.

A lack of timely routine dentistry had also contributed to Marvel's poor body condition score, evidenced by ulcers on his jaw teeth which would have caused pain and discomfort and left him less inclined to chew food. Sharp enamel points and ulcers in equine mouths develop over several months, but probably more than six, the court was told.

"In my opinion, based on the above evidence, Marvel was suffering at the time of presentation, as a result of the keeper's failure to address the skin infection and poor body condition," said one of the vets. "I was unable to ascertain whether the unwillingness to trot was due to lameness or lack of energy. Both the skin infection and poor body condition are chronic conditions, most likely developing for weeks.

"Overall for Marvel's body condition score, the combination of contributing factors - worms, lack of nutrition, dental pain, exposure, infection - are likely to have been significant for around two months, with Marvel suffering for approximately one month.

"The needs of Marvel have not been met in terms of protection from weather causing the skin infection, nor in terms of proper husbandry, nutrition or investigation of his poor body condition."

Several days later, Marvel was examined by another vet at a private boarding yard. He was still thin and unable to lock his left hind leg because of weak and underdeveloped muscles. At a further consultation on 15 May - although still fragile - his condition had improved, and he was eating well, able to trot and going outside.

During the investigation, Rush claimed that someone else was responsible for caring for Marvel. Enquiries by the RSPCA revealed that others had provided food at times because they were so concerned about his poor condition.

In addition to the three-year ban, which Rush will not be able to contest for the duration, magistrates also imposed a fine of £576, a victim surcharge of £230 and a contribution towards costs of £300.

Marvel was cared for by the RSPCA's Felledge Equine Centre, where he went on to make a full recovery and has since been rehomed.

Rush has transferred the care of other horses she owns to someone else.

On Monday evening, officers from Darlington response attended a disturbance at North Park Care Home.

Carers quickly raised the alarm after the man, living with dementia, became irritated, distressed and wanted to leave the home.

Sergeant Emily Knights and PC Sarah Grainger arrived and identified themselves as police officers which immediately calmed him down.

They listened to his concerns and reassured the man that they were there to help him.

After speaking with him for quite some time, they soon realised that he was a new resident and had only moved into the home that night.

As a thank you, the staff and carers dropped in a hamper full of sweet treats to the team yesterday.

A spokesperson from North Park Care Home said: “Your team approached the situation amazingly and took the time to listen to the gentleman and his concerns whilst keeping him calm.

“Your approach with the gentleman who has a dementia was outstanding.

“You went above and beyond to ensure that the gentleman and the care home got the correct referral from the emergency duty team and stayed to ensure our resident remained settled.

“I can’t thank you and your team enough for the support you showed to myself and my team.

“Just in the way of an update, the gentleman remained calm and settled. He is doing well and now getting the correct treatment.”

Last night, as families enjoyed trick-or-treating, a Ford Focus was spotted driving dangerously through Shildon.

The vehicle was believed to have been involved in a burglary earlier in the day and officers from Durham’s Roads and Armed Policing Unit as well as the Police Helicopter began a pursuit.

The car put other road users at serious risk, driving with no lights on and at speeds of up to 80mph on the wrong side of the road at points through Chilton and Ferryhill.

To bring an end to the dangerous driving, officers made tactical contact, and stopped the car before four suspects legged it on foot.

The driver and a passenger were detained at the scene.

The driver, a 21-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, failing to stop and having no insurance.

The passenger, a 25-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Both remain in police custody and an investigation is ongoing to trace the other two suspects.

An officer was injured during the pursuit and was taken to hospital for treatment.

A robber who stole a man’s e-bike before threatening him with an axe for the charger has been jailed.

Brian Anthony Blackie Todd approached the victim as he was riding along Geneva Road, in Darlington, on August 30, when he punched him in the face and stole the bike.

Not content with the first offence, the 31-year-old turned up at the victim’s house the next day armed with an axe and threatened to kill him if he did not hand over the bike’s charger.

Officers swiftly arrested Todd, who was identified by the victim, and charged him with robbery and possessing an offensive weapon in public.

The e-bike was recovered from his address and returned to its rightful owner.

Todd, of Darlington, initially denied the offences and was due to stand trial but changed his plea to guilty.

He also pleaded guilty to an arson in the Cleveland area.

At Teesside Crown Court yesterday, Todd was sentenced to a total of eight years and six months in prison.

PC Subhaan Ali, of Darlington CID, said: “Todd's behaviour was totally unacceptable and completely unprovoked. He terrorised his victim not once but twice and I hope this sentence gives the gentleman some peace of mind now he is behind bars.”

Taking down the Halloween decs today? Remember to put your security lights and doorbells back up. 💡

With the darker nights here, don’t make your home a target for thieves.

Before leaving your home, try an ‘exit routine’ to cover the essentials – locking doors, keeping valuables out of sight, and setting lights to come on when it gets dark.

🔐 Here are a few tips to help protect your home and vehicle:

- Lock all windows and doors (even when you’re home).
- Keep valuables out of view and remove items from your vehicle each night.
- Secure your vehicle and never leave keys in the ignition.
- Use lights or timer switches to keep your home well-lit.
- Secure outbuildings and gates and consider a security light or CCTV.
- Don’t leave keys in locks or near windows.
- If you drive a keyless car, keep the fob in a Faraday bag to prevent signal copying.
- Look out for elderly neighbours and use a house alarm if you have one.

If you see anything unusual, report it via 101 or 999 in an emergency.

A man has been jailed after two incidents involving fi****ms discharges in the Durham and Stockton areas.

Jack Walker, aged 30, from west Northampton, was sentenced to a total of 12 years and six months in prison at Teesside Crown Court today (Thursday 31st October).

Earlier this year, on 29th March, Walker used a stolen car to travel from Northampton to Staindrop in County Durham where a number of gun shots were fired at a residential property, where the occupants including a young child were inside.

Thankfully, they were unharmed.

Later, the stolen vehicle used in the incident was located in Cleveland and a live gr***de found inside, which was safely destroyed by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

On 12th April, Walker again used another stolen car to travel to Thornaby, where a property on Shetland Avenue was targeted and gun shots fired into a property, where the occupants were missed by a matter of inches. Fortunately no one was physically hurt.

The Audi used in the incident was located burnt out in Billingham later the same day (pictured below).

Working closely with Durham Police, Walker was charged in connection with the incidents later that month and pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender.

Temporary Detective Sergeant Rob Griffiths said: “These incidents clearly took a great deal of planning with dangerous weapons and stolen vehicles being sourced, along with measures to try to evade detection.

“The extensive investigation resulted in identifying those suspected to be involved, stolen vehicles recovered and prohibited weapons recovered and destroyed.

“Firearms are extremely dangerous weapons which can clearly cause serious harm or worse, death, and it was only by luck on both occasions that someone wasn’t seriously hurt.

“Today’s sentencing is welcomed and reflets the severity of the incidents and highlights the consequences of being in possession of a firearm. Jack Walker will spend a number of years reflecting on his actions and I would encourage others who are involved in such criminality to consider the consequences of engaging in it.

“The impact of these incidents extends beyond the victims and the effects are felt on whole communities. I hope today's sentencing provides reassurance to those communities and sends a clear message to those who commit such serious and dangerous offences that we will thoroughly investigate and bring those responsible to justice.”

Detective Constable Victoria Patrickson, said: “These two incidents saw a dangerous gunman attend residential addresses in both Durham and Cleveland. On the first occasion the bullets passed straight through the front door with one bullet was found lodged in a vacuum cleaner and another found wedged in an internal wall.

“On the second occasion two rounds of ammunition were again fired into a residential property, where a bullet was recovered from the media wall in the living room.

“The investigation team have successfully brought a dangerous offender to justice. Let this be a warning to others that the criminal use of fi****ms will not be tolerated.”

Two women, aged 31 and 30, and a 31-year-old man from Northampton, along with a 17-year-old boy from Billingham, have been released from police bail.

Durham and England cricketer Ben Stokes has revealed a number of masked people have burgled his home in Castle Eden, County Durham, whilst he was away with the England team in Pakistan earlier this month.

Appealing for information on X, the Durham all-rounder said: "On the evening of Thursday 17th October a number of masked people burgled my home in the Castle Eden area in the North East.

"They escaped with jewellery, other valuables and a good deal of personal items. Many of those items have real sentimental value for me and my family. They are irreplaceable.

"This is an appeal for any help in finding these people who carried out this act.

"By far the worst thing about this crime is that it was carried out whilst my wife and 2 young children were in the house. Thankfully, none of my family came to any physical harm. Understandably, however, the experience has had an impact on their emotional and mental state. All we can think about is how much worse this situation could have been.

"I am releasing photographs of some of the stolen items - which I hope may be easily identified - in the hope that we can find the people who are responsible for this.

"Although we have lost cherished possessions, to be clear, my sole motivation in sharing these photographs is not the recovery of material items. It is to catch the people who did this.

"Please come forward and contact Durham Constabulary on 101 quoting crime reference CRI00575927 if you think that you have any relevant information.

"Finally, I want to say thank you to the police service. Both now and whilst I was away in Pakistan, their support for my family has been outstanding. They continue to work incredibly hard in trying to find these people."

The photos attached are those released by Ben Stokes, showing some of the items stolen.
