I had a chat with one of my business bff's yesterday, a branding strategist. She dropped a truth bomb that I've thrown at my own clients a million times: "If you aren't saying things that both attract and repel people, what on earth are you doing with your messaging?"

You see, having a "message" in your marketing basically means you've got a unique point of view. It's like having an opinion - and we all know, everyone's got one.

But guess what? Your opinion on certain things isn't everyone's cup of tea, and that's perfectly alright.

Think of your marketing message as your opinionated friend. It's not here to please the entire room, just a specific group of pals.

Marketing was born to seek out and connect with the folks who'll benefit most from what you're dishing out.

(And no, I'm not talking about those bigwigs who blanket the planet with their ads - that's mass marketing. It's designed not to ruffle any feathers. Think of them as the Jedi Masters of mass marketing.)

Now, I'll be honest, this approach doesn't exactly make me everyone's BFF. And you know what? That's perfectly fine.

It's a good thing to lay out your beliefs and how you run your show. That's how you craft a brand. That's how you thrive in the online jungle.
