Con Antonio Martino se ne va un amico carissimo, uno studioso illustre, un uomo libero. Con lui ho condiviso l’idea della nascita di Forza Italia, della quale ebbe la tessera numero due. Fu uno dei più apprezzati Ministri dei nostri governi, agli Esteri e alla Difesa, stimatissimo in tutti i contesti internazionali e soprattutto negli Stati Uniti, dove si era formato e dove era di casa.
Figlio di Gaetano Martino, uno dei padri fondatori dell’Unione Europea, allievo e amico del premio Nobel Milton Friedman, liberale intransigente, liberista convinto, con il suo pensiero orientò e caratterizzò il programma di Forza Italia fin dal 1994.
Con lui elaborai fra l’altro il nostro progetto di riforma fiscale, basato sulla flat tax.
Me ne mancheranno i modi squisiti, le citazioni colte, l’ironia tagliente, la discrezione. Quella con cui scelse di farsi da parte da una politica attiva che in fondo non aveva mai amato, che intendeva come un dovere civile e morale, al servizio della libertà.
Anche in questo eravamo profondamente affini.

February 26, 1915: The Welsh Guards were founded by the Royal Warrant of His Majesty King George V of the United Kingdom. They were immediately sent into action in World War I.

"The Welsh Guards was formed on the 26th of February 1915 at the request of King George V. Three days later, on St David’s Day, the Regiment mounted its first King’s Guard and shortly afterwards sailed for Northern France, winning its first Battle Honour at Loos on the 27th of September. The Welsh Guards served with distinction for the remainder of the First World War, proving itself to be a more than worthy member of the Household Division.

Since the First World War, the Welsh Guards has continued to uphold the highest standards of soldiering in both war and peacetime, serving in Northern Europe, Italy and Tunisia during the Second World War and in a number of other conflicts, including Aden, the Falklands and more recently Iraq and Afghanistan. The Regiment has also conducted peacekeeping missions in Palestine, Angola and Bosnia, to name but a few, whilst carrying out Ceremonial duties at the Royal Palaces as part of its dual role." - wg100.co.uk
