RadioActivism An international youth project by Radio MARŠ (Maribor, SI), Radio Helsinki (Graz, AU) and Radio Student (Zagreb, HR).

The core of the project is the production of Unpolluted On Air, a podcast series covering environmentalism and climate change. RadioAktivizem is an international project of three independent radio stations: Radio MARŠ (Maribor, Slovenia), Radio Helsinki (Graz, Austria) and Radio Student (Zagreb, Croatia). The core of the project is the production of a series of podcasts on specific sub-topics of e

nvironmentalism and climate change, produced by young radio workers, journalists and environmental activists. The podcast series Unpolluted On Air, co-produced by Radio MARŠ, Radio Helsinki and Radio Student, will comprise 40 episodes produced and aired between June 2022 and August 2023. Each radio crew will produce one episode per month, while four special, joint episodes will be done in collaboration of all three radio crews. On a monthly basis, teams of young radio workers will explore a common theme, each in their own local environment. The project is financed by Erasmus+, Movit.

Here it is. The final episode of Unpolluted On Air, recorded near Radio MARŠ Maribor, with RadioActivism partners from Radio Student 100,5MHz Zagreb and Radio Helsinki Graz. Retrospectively and aided by soundbites from past episodes and the pleasant chirping of birds in the background, we assess the lessons learned and challenges faced during the project, as well as look ahead. To future endeavors in a hopefully non-dystopian future!

The Unpolluted on Air podcast production on Radio MARŠ concludes, at least for the first series, with a “trash talk” episode. Slovene does not have an adequate equivalent for the phrase, but Alja and Jan are joined by more than adequate guest: Katja Sreš, the president of the Ekologi brez meja (Ecologists without borders) association. It was founded 13 years ago through an all-Slovene actions Očistimo Slovenijo which resonated strongly through Slovene public. Today, the main line of work for the association is “zero waste”. About the latter, the trash in nature and in cloud, about Maribor trash and 2nd Reuse Festival in Maribor, in the penultimate "Maršian" episode of the series.

Environmental activism in rural Slovenia has been, until recently, more of a campaigning, specific, localised activism. In recent decades, non-governmental organizations have started to address individual cases of harming the environment, changes in legislation, and also acted as agents of civic cases against harmful interventions in the environment. But maybe the biggest engagement has been the consequence of Youth for Environmental Justice movement (Mladi za podnebno pravičnost – MZPP), a Slovene movement that has joined the loud voices of the generation of tomorrow.

In this Radio MARŠ episode of Unpolluted On Air, Timotej talks with co-coordinators of MZPP Maribor, Ivana Rataj and Rene Fras; they talk about the organisation itself, contacting the decision makers, reaching abroad and main challenges of the movement and environmental activism in general.

In their final in-house episode of Unpolluted On Air, the Radio Helsinki team focuses on the activists, organisations and movements present in their local environment. They interview four activists:. Gea, Nicolas and Hannah meet with Alina from Südwind to talk about the origins and needs for establishing a new NGO, past activities of interventions in front of the European parliament on the topics of climate change and near-future activities such as “Kleidertausch-Party” (clothes swap party). Gea and Hannah interview Valentin representing the Lätzte Generation, talking about the ways they “step out” and why classical demonstrating does not bring any change. Nicolas invites Maria from Autofrei Tag and Karo from Jugendrat. Maria presented us the upcoming “Mobil ohne Auto” (Autofreier Tag) on June 18. Karo debates about the role of the female gender in our society, such as non-gender appropriate language that we regrettably keep encountering in everyday life. To make our language more equitable for all genders, they partnered with F-Streik to have “*innen” stickers printed.

But before the interview with the four activists, we hear Maryna, the RadioActivist who moved to Chile, who, among other things, says: “In South America, the environmental movement is tightly connected with the indigenous rights protection.” Maryna as well presents eco-activism throughout the past several decades.

Ivan P, Sara P and Sara S from Radio Student 100,5MHz trash-talked waste management in Zagreb. We’ve reflected on the new garbage sorting model in Zagreb and shared our thoughts on it. We have also prepared a short vox populi where you can hear other people’s opinions on whether they think this new system is effective and how they handle sorting waste. In the interview, we spoke with Marko Košak from Zelena Akcija, who told us why this model of waste disposal was chosen, what are its advantages and disadvantages, how effective it is and whether less waste is currently being generated because of it. He also gave his opinion on Jakuševac, the trash-mountain of Zagreb, and told us how bad it is for the city and what consequences it has on people’s health. He also shared with us the ways in which we can create less waste, how much space and infrastructure is really needed to sort the categories of waste and where to get the best information about waste separation.

Dear second hand lovers, fans of vintage, 80s, 90s, xy-ish. Dear all who are into antique furniture, who donate clothes, care deeply about the consequences of fast fashion. And dear all who are on the way to become such. Maybe a step further towards awareness after listening to the March edition of Unpolluted on Air by the RadioActivists of Radio Helsinki Graz. In this week's Radio Student 100,5MHz-produced episode of Unpolluted On Air, Ivan, Sara S and Sara P discussed the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. They touched on some goals that are most closely related to sustainable living and ecology and commented on the current situation in Croatia. Sara P spoke with the director of ODRAZ (Sustainable Community Development), Lidija Pavić-Rogošić. ODRAZ is a civil society organization that encourages and supports the implementation of changes aimed at sustainability. Rogošić told a little more about the organization itself and its goals, the situation in Croatia regarding the 17 goals, and she explained in which goals we are progressing and in which we are falling behind.

In this week’s Radio MARŠ-produced episode of the Unpolluted on air podcast, we talked to Simon Žlahtič, a man of culture, in both senses (don’t worry, this joke is referenced only once throughout the podcast). Simon majored in Art History and worked as a culture producer, before taking over the “agricultural property” in Drankovec, in the neighboring municipality of Pesnica, as a farmer and fruit producer. On the premises there are a house, fields, a pond, barn, sheep, goat, a few acres of forest… And the sum represents “the basic societal cell”, to sum up his recent article in Slovene architecture magazine Outsider. Simon is also an ex-member of MARŠ, an environmentalist, and one of the proponents of “Save the Rogoza forest” initiative, who stood against the construction of the Magna Steyr factory on the farmland in the vicinity of Maribor. The interview touches on the initiative, other actions, the relationship between the land and the people, on how to tackle tradition and more. Mainly, through the prism of sustainability.

Radio Helsinki’s February edition of Unpolluted On Air covers sustainable development goals. Have you heard of them? Would you claim that you know exactly what they mean? What about the SDG 7 (Sustainable Development Goals 7) – to “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all”? That is the current topic on a global level, and in our episode, with focus on Austria and Graz. Three interviews: Nicolas talked with his mum who works in the field of SDGs, Theresa visited Prof. Dr. Alfred Posch, professor at the University of Graz with expertise in the field of Sustainable transition and innovation and transdisciplinary learning for sustainable development; Leonie talked with an employee from the Carla store about their sustainable measures. And in between? Leonie prepared facts and theoretical background to broaden our horizons.

Are there significant differences in perception of a global problem between different generations of Zagreb residents? Are older generations more skeptical about climate change and if so, why? Do younger generations have a more pessimistic view of the future of the planet than older generations? In this episode the Radio Student 100,5MHz team from Zagreb discuss generational awareness about climate change. They also interview people of different generations about their view of ecological problems and talked with Bernard Ivčić, a representative of Zelena Akcija (Green Action) about what activities their NGO organizes to raise awareness about climate change.

The eternal conflict between generations is also evident in the environmental struggle, more relevant today than ever before. The first unpolluted episode of Radio MARŠ in 2023 serves you the much needed “intergenerational panacea” – intergenerational dialogue. RadioActivist Zinedin talks with a politically engaged pair of two generations: Uroš Macerl, 54, and Samo Curk, 29. Uroš is an eco farmer from the Zasavje region and a well-known environmental activist. With his Eko krog association he fought and won an ardous battle against the Lafarge Cement factory in Trbovlje. He was one of the proponents of the NO campaign against the harmful changing of the Slovenian Water Act. Today, he is vice-president of the first Slovenian Green Party, VESNA. Samo is president of the NGO called AETP – Animal Enterprise Transparency Project. The project aims to develop a transparent practice of Slovene kettle farming and shines a light on the unethical, but still mostly legal practice of slaughterhouses in Slovenia. Zinedin chats with Uroš and Samo about their own intergenerational experiences, the lack of active citizenship in Slovenia, and the unfruitfulness of the environmental policies of various Slovene governments. There is not only whining, but also discussion of solutions for bridging the intergenerational gap – from enlightened kindergartens to eco-nursing homes!

In this week's episode, an empty-stomached Zinedin in Jan from Radio MARŠ spout a humanistic talk about numbers, habits, systemic mistakes and phenomena relating to food that eventually ends up in the trash bin — be it at home or the supermarket parking lot. They are joined by anthropologist Dr. Dan Podjed, who discusses our attitude towards food as recognized by a study in the scope of the project Invisible Life of Waste / Nevidno življenje odpadkov, as well as how, during the pandemic, the pile of wasted food had been surpassed in size by the pile of packaging accompanying it.
