Today it’s April 30! Tomorrow, It’s Gonna Be . . . May!

*NSYNC’s second single “It’s Gonna Be Me” was from the album “No Strings Attached”. It was one of the most requested music videos in the VID-OK Hit Chart in the year 2000! (Yes, it became the MYX Hit Chart in 2002).

*NSYNC was under Jive Records (just like the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Steps, etc.) and during the time of the second album, they were released in the Philippines through Universal Records. Jive Records was previously licensed to BMG Pilipinas, hence when N-Sync visited the Philippines to promote their first album in 1997, it was handled by BMG Pilipinas.

“Refreshing Rhythms” was a very memorable CD! It was released by Warner Music Philippines in 1999 and featured 10 tracks compiled for Palmolive Botanicals Shampoo.

Back in 2000, Palmolive ran a CD giveaway promo on VID-OK. It was one of the better sponsorship deals that the sales team was able to close.

I cannot specifically recall the exact number but probably around 1,000 CDs of “Refreshing Rhythms” were to be given away. Hundreds of discs were picked up by winners but there were a bit of leftovers because our office was a bit difficult to locate. Under the barter deal, VID-OK was not obliged to return the unclaimed discs to Palmolive.

So for a few years, almost everyone that visited the VID-OK office surely received a copy or two. 😀😀😀

I’m glad that I was still able to find one copy and that is what is in the photo.

Link to the entire CD’s playlist on the comments section.

At the fourth quarter of 1998, “Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita” by Roselle Nava was the very first Filipino official music video that ever aired on VID-OK. Ironically, it was provided by Star Cinema - not by Star Records - it was part of their promo materials for the hit motion picture of the same name starring the late Rico Yan and Claudine Barretto.

For some reason, the official music video for this popular hit is currently not available on YouTube. Oddly enough, as of this posting (July 11, 2021), the lyric video that ABS-CBN Star Music’s YouTube channel posted showcases the cover art of Roselle Nava’s 1994 album under Ivory Records - instead of the actual Star Records album which contained DMNMK entitled “On Higher Ground”. Maybe someone will notice this oversight soon enough.

Under Ivory Records, Roselle Nava’s 1994 debut album “Roselle” spawned her breakthrough hit “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita” which was followed by her 1996 CD “Say It Again” that carried the massive cover of the Basil Valdez/Martin Nievera classic “Say That You Love Me” which helped popularize the acoustic remake/covers genre in the Philippines which is still very much around until today.

Nineteen years ago today, VID-OK signed-off permanently at 11:59 p.m. (June 2, 2002).

Immediately right after, it seamlessly merged with MYX.

VID-OK was only available on SkyCable in Metro Manila while MYX was on UHF nationwide. MTV Philippines and Channel V Philippines were both on most cable systems and UHF. Viewership surveys showed that VID-OK had higher ratings than MYX, Channel V Philippines and MTV Philippines combined!

MYX was originally a music block on Studio 23 - it aired during early mornings, late afternoons and late evenings. Upon merging with VID-OK, MYX became a 24-hour channel on cable and continued airing on its timeslots via Studio 23.

And this was the very last music video that aired on VID-OK.

Here’s a music video that was first seen on VID-OK.

“Deep” by Binocular was a song that started out as a radio favorite and then crossed over to cable, thanks to Warner Music Philippines.

Eventually, MYX also played it.

Filipinos have always been open to all kinds of music. Even if the songs had lyrics in a different language!

This was way before the acceptance of K-pop. Back in 1999, VID-OK started playing the J-pop music video: “Automatic” by Japanese artist Utada Hikaru. Viewers immediately took notice of the catchy beat and melody plus the few English words mentioned all over the song!

You might have forgotten about this song from the late 1990s. This was one of the songs that was regularly requested on VID-OK Hotline back in 1998. This karaoke hit was from American singer Samantha Cole!

She visited Manila and Cebu that same year to promote her self-titled debut album which was released in the Philippines by BMG Pilipinas. This is her big sing-along single: “Without You”!

This is a photo of the actual guide (fondly called “idiot board”) that was used by guests in doing station IDs for VID-OK. Usually, this is held below/beside the camera to help them say the lines properly.

Since interview time with the artist is very limited, the last two minutes or so are specifically devoted for doing station IDs.

A lot of foreign artists struggled with the Tagalog phrases which resulted in a lot of bloopers! Hahaha!

During the early years, we still took the time to have the idiot boards signed! We’ll be sharing photos of those that we were able to keep in our files after all these years!

This one is from Danish girl group: Juice! Their single “Best Days” became a Philippine favorite in the late 1990s!

The following post was lifted offf the Instagram account of Andre Alvarez, former Channel Producer of VID-OK and former Channel Head of MYX for over 19 years during the 20th anniversary of MYX Philippines:

Day 6 of . Let me introduce you to the Videonics Titlemaker TM-1 (photo not mine - I found it online).

This singular machine spelled the difference between a low-budget karaoke channel (VID-OK) and the leading music channel in the region that dominated the world (including the Philippines) for many years (MTV/MTV Asia/MTV Philippines).

It was probably worth P10,000 back then (maybe even cheaper) and there were three in our JUSMAG office during that time. Originally, these were used to do the announcements, birthdays, prayers on SkyCable’s Barker Channel, FYI Channel or any other channel that needed video titles.

When I took over VID-OK in 1998, we monopolized the use of these often-ridiculed, maligned and ignored machines. Back then, the post-prod people were so standoffish while they lorded over the use of the “high-tech” Amiga, DFS, Macs and Avids! Hahaha!

Doing VID-OK Hotline and VID-OK D-Day live on weekends at the basement of Benpres Building, we ran the Videonics units to the ground! The AC adapters would overheat and melt from over-use! We had to buy those generic multi-volt adapters from SM, Abenson and as far as Raon, on a monthly basis!

The rubber keyboard on the Videonics would often get stuck or would be non-responsive - causing many hilarious wrong spelled words on air! Hahaha!

For the record, these were the very first machines that we used to put on-screen lyrics on to music videos. A revolutionary concept during that time. All the TV stations’ chargen people in the Philippines must be cursing me for jumpstarting the trend of on-screen lyrics. It was never done before! That probably was one of my biggest contributions to the Philippine television industry! Almost every music program on TV - even online - now includes lyrics on-screen! Hahaha!

But up to now, not a lot of people realize that there is a science and an art in putting those lyrics on screen. And the VID-OK and MYX chargen people have mastered those skills. Salute to all of you!

VID-OK is the “grandfather” of .

At the start of 1998, the SkyCable Programming Department decided to improve the programs on VID-OK.

For many years, the channel was randomly playing videoke songs on a 24-hour basis.

Prior to a full reformat of VID-OK, a new song was chosen and highlighted as the “Song Of The Week” on the weekend interactive programs: VID-OK Hotline (a request show) and VID-OK D-Day (a dedication/greeting program).

The very first Song Of The Week on VID-OK was the immortal theme song of the blockbuster “Titanic”. Here is Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”!

Hi! Welcome to the VID-OK Facebook fanpage!

VID-OK was a music channel in Metro Manila that aired via SkyCable channel 19 from the mid-1990s up to mid-2002 when it merged with MYX.

The all-new VID-OK channel reformatted in 1998 as it delivered karaoke hits and favorites - all-day and all-night - 24 hours a day/7 days a week! From the hottest tracks then to the most loved tunes from the past - pop, rock, dance, ballads, OPM, alternative and standards. One enjoyed the best music in just one venue, right at the comforts of one’s own home!

VID-OK was under SkyCable’s Programming Department until its ownership and operations were transferred to Creative Programs, Inc. in 2001.
