Like all Americans, I mourn the tragic loss of life at Reagan National Airport and extend heartfelt condolences to all family members and friends experiencing this unimaginable loss.
I’ve had the privilege of witnessing, celebrating, and advocating for the gifts, talents, and abilities of all Americans with intellectual disabilities my entire life, including as part of the Special Olympics movement.
Regarding President Trump’s comments that the FAA includes a focus on hiring people with severe intellectual disabilities and that the FAA wants individuals with severe disabilities to be air traffic controllers, to our knowledge, no persons with profound intellectual disabilities are employed as air traffic controllers in the U.S. or elsewhere.
People with intellectual disabilities are a valuable asset to the workplace and we will continue to advocate that they be treated fairly now and in the future.
