Within our experience of wonder, when we encounter something beautiful, there is almost something transcendent about it. On this week’s episode, we explore with Fr. Brian Larkin, host of the Gregorian Rant podcast, the spiritual components to beauty and wonder, and how it can speak to our deepest desires. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Just like we know in our world that if you stand for truth, there’s going to be a battle. If you stand for goodness, there’s going to be a battle. We oftentimes don’t think we have to battle for beauty…but we do. There’s a lot of ugliness in the world, and we don’t just have to appreciate beauty, we actually have to fight for it. We have to be willing to sacrifice for it.” -Fr. Brian Larkin⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We are the first generation to have access to our genome data. Our genomes make up the story and wonderment of who we are as human species.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Combining information from human genomes with poetic visualization, Lynn Fellman combines art and story to illuminate the beauty and benefit of evolutionary science.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In this episode we learn:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-How some genes have codes for extra sensory powers and could reveal rare life-enhancing mutations that only you possess
-The story and evolution of “jumping genes” and how this can be used as a tool for gene discovery in cancer.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’m giving my 💯 today. That looks like sweat pants, barely showered, just cried, recording on the couch, and an 8 minute episode kind of day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In all honesty, I’ve been struggling lately. Struggling with my health. And subsequently I start questioning my value, when all I can “give” and “do” seems so little. Do you ever feel like that?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Reflecting on this past month and on this podcast, there’s something I tend to forget about wonder…it’s simplicity.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“You can recognize truth by its beauty and simplicity.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Often beautiful things are beautiful because they’re fully “being” who and what they are. There’s nothing complex about just “being.” No crazy agendas or expectations. And yet, sometimes being “useless” has incredible value (as we talked about in episode 2).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This week our episode is more of a mini, unscripted and unedited reflection on just that: wonder’s simplicity.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Simplicity requires patience, whether that be forced upon you from life’s challenges, or whether you choose to embrace it amidst your busyness. Be patient with yourself, and find a wonder this week based on its simplicity. (Mine was watching the clouds during my car ride to the doctor
☁️ ). Let simplicity teach you that once again, you don’t have to always “do” to have value.

Meet Ava through the eyes of her sister, Ashlyn Frederick, Executive Director at The Mission Project for adults with developmental disabilities. Ava has Down Syndrome, the most common chromosomal disorder in the U.S. Ava lives life with constant wonder, teaching us to celebrate our achievements and never give up. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“We should all have courage to do something that we want to, regardless of how small it seems—and find joy in that and be brave. That’s what Ava and other children and adults with disabilities have taught me.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

On this episode 10, our guest Dan Purkapile, a cabinetmaker to casket designer, takes us through why he decided to beautify his mother’s casket when she became ill, and what the designs he chose represent about his beliefs around death and hope. Earning his title - “Cabinet-making Philosopher on Beauty" - we expand beyond cabinets in our conversation to Roman art, space exploration and why caskets make us so uncomfortable.

Through the eyes is how many of us begin the incredible encounter with the wonders of the world. The miracle of vision is one of the greatest gifts we have as humans; and yet, our eyes do much more than simply see things. Dr. Charles Yancey takes us through the wonders of one of the most complex organisms in our body.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We'll learn why:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. The eye is the fastest muscle in our body⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. How visual eye puzzles and tricks work⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Why so much of our brain is devoted to our eyes⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. What being nearsighted or farsighted and 20/20 vision actually means⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. Whether everyone has blindspots in their vision⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6. How the brain compensates for those who have sight impairments⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"The eye is so complex and it has so many different disciplines in it. Let's just say it has physics with optics. It has incredibly complex neurobiology. It is integrated with so many different systems in our body. And it's just so complex that I can't imagine how that would ever have come without design.” -Dr. Charles Yancey⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

New episode posted! With Psychologist Dr. Daniel McClure, we explore how beauty is relational. Diving into our attachment styles, we learn how we all live with insecurities in our relationships. We discuss how beauty and encounters with wonder can help us face our insecurities and reveal to us our inherent value, helping us "live like we mean it!"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We examine:
1. Is beauty considered a psychological "need" for humans?
2. What's going on in our brains when we experience beauty?
3. What's the relationship between beauty and our attachments (i.e. where we go when we are emotionally distressed)?

In episodes 1 & 2 we gave you a challenge: spend an entire minute engrossed in the beautiful object you see before you—a flower, a sunset, etc.—before you take out your phone and snap a photo. Wonder is a momentary experience, and you can never re-live it. This is your reminder to be fully present today, in case beauty decides to pay you a visit.

Awe happens when something is SO VAST that it’s hard to fit into our current way of thinking. We will speak with Joe Beckman on the wonders of toast, clouds, puddles, and 5 life-saving phrases every kid...no...every human needs to hear.

"If you want to be truly happy, keep that little kid inside of you alive. Grow up, move forward, take risks, accept new challenges. And at the same time, don't forget to play and dance and jump in puddles and make shapes out of clouds. You can still build maturity, but live enthusiastically in wonder and awe."

It’s part of our human nature to put things we can’t control in “boxes” so they’re more manageable. This can sometimes look like putting the blame for life’s current circumstances on a particular group or person. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The first step to receiving Wonder is to be open to what reality is telling and showing you. Have a disposition of openness—listening before seeking an explanation. This “poverty of spirit” will fill us with new understanding and help us adapt to our ever changing environments. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

~Awake to Wonder Podcast Episode 2: “Why Wonder? Let’s be useless” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What is your WOW (Wonder Of the Week)?

Do you agree? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What’s true about humanity is how much we lack. We are always seeking, and always searching to be fulfilled. Try to be attune to this the next time you experience something truly beautiful. What “lack” do you experience deep down in that moment of wonder?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Episode 2: “Why Wonder? Let’s be Useless” is all about our productivity-driven world and the seeming “uselessness” of beauty - but could this busy lifestyle & mindset actually be causing us to evolve backwards as humans? What keys are we missing?
