Hello, friends.

Our friend Flip who guested in our show needs our help. His dad is in ICU. He fell from the roof yesterday, suffered injuries. Doctors suspect he had a stroke while on the roof. This morning, they found out he's also Covid positive. We're hoping to raise funds to help with the bills. Please reach out to Jill Masalonga on Facebook/Messenger for more details.

Thank you. 🙏

Did someone say special birthday episode???

There's absolutely no way we're gonna let our girl's birthday pass without doing an episode for her. So we took a break from taking a break to record this very special episode where we're joined by Jill's boyfriend, Trevor. What's Jill like as a girlfriend? Get to know the birthday girl more by listening to this brand new Ihaw Ihaw Show.

Coronavirus, the pandemic is now a year old. The little passion project that we created when the pandemic hit is a year old too! The podcast is nothing grand but it’s become an avenue for Filipinos to talk about their joys and challenges of living abroad.

Milestones: 4 seasons, 35 guests and listeners from 46 countries!!

We can’t thank you enough for the support. You guys inspired us to keep creating something.

PS. Your Ihaw Ihaw Crew didn’t predict that the show and the pandemic will take this long. We became super busy with our work and other commitments. We are taking a break (I think we deserve that!! Haha) and we’re hoping to come back sometime next month with a new perspective. We’re talking about going visual on YouTube.

The best is yet to come, Happy Anniversary Ihawaiians!!!

In the meantime, you can still listen to our four seasons. It’s available in all major streaming platforms.

Bye for now!

Special episode drop!

One-third of the Ihaw Ihaw crew is celebrating their birthday today, and we could not let it pass without publishing a special birthday episode. Trivia alert! It was actually Roes who came up with our fun segment in the show, so Jill thought we would turn the table around and ask Roes 35 burning questions for his 35th birthday. How well did he do? You gotta listen to find out. And of course, it would not be an Ihaw Ihaw birthday episode without a surprise. So make sure you stick around until the end.

Happy, happy birthday, our dear Roes!

No question -– finding your tribe in a foreign land makes living abroad so much easier and a lot more enjoyable. Being part of a community, especially the ones that share a common goal, not only satisfies our need for companionship, but also gives us a sense of purpose. We dedicated our last regular episode this season for a discussion on the importance of community groups outside the Philippines that are calling for action. Sammie Jam Rumbaua; an advocate, community organizer, youth worker and entrepreneur, joins us from Vancouver, Canada to talk about why it's vital that we give voice and platform to the vulnerable members of our community. It’s another must-listen episode of the Ihaw-Ihaw Show, and it is our hope that you learn from it as much as we did.

“It’s an honor just to be Asian.” – Sandra Oh

Our very special guest this episode is a Filipino-American Hollywood actress. Full stop.

No big deal, right? But not only that, Maureen Sebastian is also a writer, producer and co-creator of two podcasts. We are so lucky to be joined by Maureen to discuss the importance of representation, the arts, and pursuing one’s passion. She proved to be a super cool guest and even dropped a bomb on us towards the end of the interview. Needless to say, we fell in love with Maureen, and we could not have picked a more appropriate time to publish this episode with everything that is going on in the world.

What’s not to love about a potluck party? Not only will you get to have a good time with your friends, you’ll also get to showcase your cooking skills (or your mom’s best dish). Speaking of potluck, we are joined this episode by Kiya Basabas, writer and director of the play “Potluck” which was recently showcased in sold-out shows in this year’s biggest open-access arts festival in New Zealand, Fringe. The crew sat down with Kiya to discuss the play, her passions in life, her Filipino background plus more.

It’s always fun having creatives in the show, and this one is no exception. Also, did we mention that Roes actually auditioned for the play? Did he make it? You gotta listen to find out.

What’s Roasting? The Filipino Singing Talent! Vocal Coach Edition! It’s been said time and again that Filipinos are some of the best singers in the world. Well, guess what, we’re not just great in singing, but we are also gifted in teaching others how to sing! Tina Bangel, owner and founder of One Voice School of Singing, joins us from Sydney, Australia where she is now based. What’s Roasting? Filipino Doctors 2-Part Special (2/2)
Two for Two!

For part 2 of our Pinoy Doctors Abroad Special, we linked up with two Filipino doctors currently based in the United States. Both hailing from the University of the Philippines, Dr. Denise Sese joined us from Ohio while Dr. Nico Cabrera is in California. We talked about their journey to becoming medical practitioners in the US, the challenges they face in their profession especially in the time of Covid, the phenomenon that is "brain drain" in the Philippines, their plans for the foreseeable future, and a lot more in between. This is the first time for most of us to meet, but it sure did not feel that way as we had so much fun talking that it seemed like we've known each other for a while.

A few weeks ago, we had our first multi-part episodes when Ria, Jason, and Michelle guested in our show. They all have Pinoy roots and are now media practitioners based in Canada. This time around, we are featuring Pinoy doctors practicing in North America in a two-part special. Given that health professionals are some of the busiest people in the world these days, we’re very much grateful to be joined by three of them.

First up is Dr. JJ Dubec, a Vancouver physician and an automotive enthusiast. As usual, we touched on how Dr. JJ is doing nowadays in the time of corona, his Filipino heritage, the Pinoy community in Vancouver, his love for collecting luxury cars, and more. Dr. JJ was such a character that we had so much fun talking to him and getting to know him, and one thing we can say is he’s definitely a guy that’s full of surprises. We won’t spoil it too much for you, so start listening and discover the fun for yourself.

Ever wondered how your friends make their cool social media posts on their feed? Like, you swear they’re no graphic artists but for some unknown reason they’re always able to come up with super nice posts and even doing them like a pro. Well, chances are they’re probably using Canva. Arguably the simplest and most user-friendly online design and publishing tool around, Canva was founded by – yup, you guessed it right – someone who has Filipino roots! Filipino-Australian Melanie Perkins is the CEO and owner of the company and is now the third richest woman in Australia. Whew.

To learn more about Canva’s success and just how Filipino the company is, we invited Canva Philippines’ Head of Growth Maisie Littaua. We also talked about her Canva journey so far, their company culture, how to thrive in the field of graphic design, and a little bit about Melanie Perkins (we only heard good things!) Whether you’re interested in graphics, learning about other people’s success stories, or even just the current trends on social media posts, this episode has a little bit of that and more. Working Holiday Visa - ever heard of that?

There's always one thing you keep hearing or reading about, yet you and everyone you know have never seen it, touched it or experienced it. It one hundred percent exists, but the lack of personal experience makes it seem like it doesn't -- aka a myth. For a lot of people, working holiday visa is kinda like that.

Well, that changes today (lol). Canadian Danielle Mathieu joins the Ihaw Ihaw crew to share her experience living abroad through the working holiday visa. She talks about the process of obtaining one, her life in Australia and Japan, why she decided to move back to Canada and more.

Listen and stop being naive 😅 Start your week by listening to this one. This one's full of good vibes all over, that much we can promise.

Happy Holidays, Ihawaiians! We hope you’re all having the best time with your loved ones and that all your Christmas wishes would come true.

Speaking of wishes, most people could only wish to go to the Olympics. But would you believe us if we tell you that our special guest for today’s episode have been to the Olympics not just as a spectator but as a broadcaster and not just once but multiple times? Yup, that’s right! Jeff Ruffolo is a three-time Summer Olympic sportscaster for Westwood One and the CBS Radio Network at the 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games. Now currently based in Cebu, Jeff joins your Ihaw Ihaw crew to talk about his broadcasting experience, his life in different parts of Asia, and the things that have led him to his current disposition.

Listen in for another fun and memorable episode of Ihaw Ihaw Show!

Filipinos thriving in their new life abroad? We love to see it. LGBTQIA+ movies and tv shows going mainstream? We love to see it. A Filipino making and starring in an LGBTQIA+ show?

WE. LOVE. TO. SEE. IT.

Created by and starring Maki Bonifacio, "Trying Hard" is a comedy web series that follows the intimate story of Maki – a gay person of color from the Philippines working and living in Nashville, Tennessee. Your Ihaw Ihaw Crew sat down with Maki to talk about how and why he created Trying Hard, how he ended up in the US, building his social network, and many other super interesting stuff. Talking to Maki was like talking to an old friend. It was so casual and fun that it felt more like catching up than doing an interview.

Filipinos supporting each other? We love to see it.

It’s the first episode of Season 4, and your favorite trio is going back to the basics - just the three of us speaking from our personal experiences.

In this episode, we will be talking about the pros and cons of moving abroad. Some of the most common reasons for migrating are better pay, broadening life experiences, and just overall “greener pasture.” Looks good on paper, amirite? But is it really that easy? Or are the hardships worth it?

Thirty-two episodes, 966 Minutes, 25 Countries.

One Ihaw-Ihaw Show.

You, guys, seriously. We couldn’t have done any of this without you. Thank you for listening to this show of three friends and their guests about their lives abroad. This is beyond what we imagined when we first started this podcast.
And so, we thought we’d look back on what’s transpired on the show so far and choose our favorites in different categories. We especially would like to recognize our guests who have graced our podcast on its first three seasons.

Ihawaiians, welcome to your first Ihaw Ihaw Show awards! An episode that’s purely fun and entertainment, listen and find out our favorite moments on the podcast so far!

01/12/2020

And just like that, we have finally reached the final episode of our three-part series about Filipino media practitioners. If anything, we hope that this cycle inspired our Ihawaiians to chase their dreams and pursue their passion.

In this episode, we are so privileged to be joined by Michelle Eliot, an award-winning journalist with CBC Radio One. Like the previous two shows, we sat down with Michelle to talk about her Filipino roots, her journey to becoming a household name that she is now, the importance of BIPOC representation in the media, among others. If we are to describe this episode in one word, we would definitely use “insightful.”

Go ahead and listen, and then sound off by sliding to our DMs or shooting us an email. We would definitely want to hear from you!

Wow, that past week went by so quickly! And while we’re all still recovering from our ultra-good-vibes episode with Ria, we’re already dishing out a new one! Yup, it’s part two of our “Pinoys on the News” series, and we promise this is also a super good one.

We’re joined this week by none other than Jason Pires, a co-anchor in the CTV morning show in Vancouver. An accomplished journalist, Jason talks with the crew about his Pinoy background, experiencing racism growing up, his passion for sports journalism plus his love for travelling and much more!

We’ve been so honored to have only great guests – Jason is the latest one. So, sit back, grab your cup of coffee, relax, and click the play button.

Lord of the Rings what? Back to the Future what? Toy Story what?

For the first time on Ihaw Ihaw Show, we are doing a trilogy of some sorts. And so for the next three weeks, we will be talking to three personalities in Canada’s broadcasting industry. First up is none other than Ria Renouf, a Filipino-Canadian anchor for . Ria shares with us her Pinoy roots, her journey to becoming a news anchor, the importance of diversity and representation in the broadcasting industry, and a lot more. We couldn’t have asked for a better guest to join us on this episode as Ria brought so much fun, energy and good vibes to the show. But don’t  just take our word for it - click the play button and start listening!

Thirteen years ago, Shamir's family moved from Zambia to Canada to start a new life. His story of migration is not foreign to many Filipinos who leave the homeland to seek greener pastures. Let's take a look at the parallelisms of a family from East Africa moving to another country to the so-familiar stories of our kababayans. Also, Roes could not be with us on this episode, so we have our second guest-turned-guest host, Flip Guangco, join in on the discussion.

02/11/2020

When we created this podcast, we envisioned having guests from different backgrounds and covering as many facets about living abroad as possible. For the first time on Ihaw Ihaw Show, we are featuring a Pinoy entrepreneur! Oliver Dimapilis, owner of the bar Cold Tea in Toronto, Cold Tea sits down with us to discuss how he and his business partner built their cool hang out place in 2010, how they were able to establish it as a go-to place in Kensington, Market and how they’re navigating the economy during this time of pandemic. If anything, this episode is yet another proof of the versatility of the Filipinos.

Truth is, moving abroad by yourself is already super challenging. But what more if you are uprooting not just yourself but your whole family? Well, this episode zooms in exactly on that.

In this week’s podcast, we are joined by Mr. Hans Montenegro who in 2015 moved to Hong Kong with his family and stayed there for a couple of years before coming back to the Philippines. As always, listen and learn with us as we talk about another dimension in living abroad.

It’s the reunion episode you’ve all been waiting for! Or maybe it’s just Red? Jk.

Today’s special guest is super close to all three of us on different levels. Currently based in Shanghai, China, Flip Guangco is the Head of Early Education Department at Julia Gabriel Centre. He’s been living and working in China for over 8 years, and in this episode he lets us in on what his journey has been like since he first moved to Beijing and how he survived the pandemic in the country where it all started. Flip also talks about his opinions about teaching in China plus how it’s different from his experience in the Philippines.
So tune in to this episode of the podcast and don’t forget to say “Ni hao ma?”
