The president’s declaration that he will remain in office until the leader of the principal opposition party has died and his funeral attended is a blatant affront to the foundational principles of democratic governance and human rights.

This assertion undermines the very essence of democratic legitimacy, which hinges on leadership transitions being governed by the electorate's will through impartial and transparent electoral mechanisms. Such a declaration, steeped in personal animus and authoritarian tendencies, subverts the democratic process and jeopardizes the integrity of political institutions. It reflects a profound disregard for the mechanisms of accountability and representative democracy, essential for the proper functioning of any democratic society.

In a functional democracy, the peaceful transfer of power is a cornerstone that ensures stability and respect for the will of the people. The president’s statements signal an alarming propensity for despotism, wherein power is retained through threats and intimidation rather than through democratic endorsement. This rhetoric not only endangers democratic norms but also risks engendering an environment ripe for political violence and social discord. The essential function of any democratic leader is to embody the principles of democratic engagement and to address the needs and aspirations of the populace rather than entrenching themselves through fear and coercion.

Such statements are emblematic of a disconnect between leaders and the democratic ideals they are meant to uphold. They serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of electing officials who fail to align their actions with the principles of democracy and human dignity. The president’s assertion is a callous manifestation of detachment from the genuine needs of the people, and it is imperative for him to retract his statement to prevent further erosion of democratic values and to mitigate potential for violence.

I Am Deeply Disappointed with the Political Parties for Being Silent Over the Bills.

In a remarkable show of unity and civic engagement, the youths of The Gambia have taken to the streets in a peaceful march to the National Assembly, conveying a powerful message: Gambians do not want the Judicial Officers Bill and the National Assembly Salaries and Pensions Bill to be passed. The protest was not just a demonstration of dissent; it was a successful manifestation of the people's will and their unwavering commitment to justice and accountability.

However, amidst this triumph, I must express my deepest disappointment with the political parties in The Gambia, particularly the United Democratic Party (UDP) and other opposition parties. Their blatant silence in the face of these draconian bills is a grave betrayal of the Gambian people’s trust. The bills in question appear to be self-serving measures designed to enrich members of the National Assembly and the judiciary, rather than to serve the public interest.

Gambia stands at a critical juncture, a crosscutting road where decisive and honest leadership is needed more than ever. It is imperative to call things by their real names and recognize that these bills, if passed, will not serve the Gambian populace but rather a select few. The failure of the UDP and other opposition parties to vocally oppose these bills reveals a troubling complicity. It seems that when issues arise that could potentially benefit the ruling elite and opposition alike, both sides find common ground in their mutual silence.

The United Democratic Party, in particular, has let down the Gambian people. By not speaking out against the Judicial Officers Bill and the National Assembly Salaries and Pensions Bill, the UDP has shown that it is willing to forsake its duty to represent the people’s interests. This silence is not merely a political misstep; it is a betrayal of the fundamental principles of democracy and justice that the party claims to uphold.

The youths of The Gambia, in their peaceful protest, have shown what true leadership and civic responsibility look like. Their actions should serve as a wake-up call to the political parties. The people of The Gambia deserve leaders who will stand up against corruption and self-serving legislation, leaders who will prioritize the needs and rights of the citizens over their own personal gain.

It is deeply disheartening to witness the lack of response from the political parties that are supposed to be the voice of the people. The silence of the UDP and other opposition parties suggests a disturbing alignment with the status quo, a status quo that perpetuates inequality and undermines the democratic values that Gambians have fought so hard to establish.

In this moment of crisis, the youths of The Gambia have demonstrated the true spirit of democracy and civic engagement. They have shown that peaceful protest can be a powerful tool for change. But their efforts will be in vain if the political leaders of this country continue to ignore the will of the people. It is time for the UDP and other opposition parties to break their silence, to stand with the people they are meant to represent, and to vehemently oppose the Judicial Officers Bill and the National Assembly Salaries and Pensions Bill.

The future of The Gambia depends on the actions we take today. We need leaders who are courageous enough to speak out against injustice, who are committed to the principles of democracy, and who will work tirelessly to ensure that the voices of the people are heard and respected. The silence of the political parties in the face of these bills is a stark reminder that the fight for true democracy and justice is far from over. It is a call to action for all Gambians to hold their leaders accountable and to demand the representation and governance they deserve.

As citizens of The Gambia, we all share a common bond and a collective responsibility to uplift our nation and its representatives. Gina Bass, a remarkable athlete who has brought immense pride to our country through her dedication and achievements, deserves our unwavering support and respect.

However, recent comments discouraging her and suggesting she naturalize elsewhere are both hypocritical and unpatriotic.

It is perfectly acceptable to express disappointment and frustration towards the government's lack of investment in athletics and other sporting activities. Constructive criticism is a vital part of a healthy democracy and can lead to positive change.

As the coordinator of Civic Bantaba, "the trusted voice of the community," I have been advocating tirelessly against drug abuse in The Gambia. In our previous radio panel discussion, we delved deeply into the critical issues surrounding illicit drug abuse in our nation. Our platform has had the privilege of featuring prominent figures and authorities dedicated to combating drug trafficking and drug abuse in The Gambia. Through these discussions, several recommendations have emerged to help mitigate drug abuse in our society:

National Dialogue on Drug Abuse: It is imperative to initiate a comprehensive national dialogue on drug abuse. This dialogue should involve all segments of society, including government officials, civil society organizations, healthcare providers, educators, and community leaders. By fostering an open and inclusive conversation, we can better understand the root causes of drug abuse and develop effective strategies to address them.

Involving Religious Leaders in Advocacy: Given that 99% of the Gambian population adheres to a faith, it is significant to involve religious leaders in our advocacy efforts. Imams and pastors can play a crucial role in preaching about the ills of drug abuse, as it is forbidden by Islam according to the Quran and Hadith, and similarly condemned in Christianity. By leveraging the influence of religious leaders, we can reach a broader audience and reinforce the moral and ethical imperatives against drug abuse.

Enhancing the Capacity of Drug Enforcement Officers: Fighting drug abuse is one of the most challenging tasks, often fraught with avenues for corruption if officers are not God-fearing and ethical. Additionally, the high risks associated with drug enforcement necessitate that officers are well-equipped and thoroughly trained. Enhancing their capacity through better training, resources, and support will ensure they can effectively combat drug trafficking and abuse while maintaining integrity and safety.

Provision of Gainful Employment Opportunities: Addressing drug abuse also requires tackling one of its root causes: unemployment. Providing gainful employment opportunities can offer viable alternatives to individuals who might otherwise turn to drug trafficking or abuse out of economic desperation. By creating jobs and fostering economic growth, we can help reduce the prevalence of drug abuse in our communities.

These recommendations, if implemented effectively, can significantly contribute to the reduction of drug abuse in The Gambia. As we continue our advocacy, Civic Bantaba remains committed to being the trusted voice of the community, promoting awareness, and supporting initiatives that lead to a healthier and drug-free society.

Tujereng's Impressive Run in the 2024 GFF Beach Soccer Tournament

Tujereng is making waves in the ongoing GFF Beach Soccer Tournament 2024, showcasing a blend of resilience and dominance across their matches. After four games, the team stands out with a mixed record of narrow battles and a stunning victory.

In their opening match, Tujereng faced a tough opponent in Steve Biko. Despite a valiant effort, they narrowly lost 7-6, setting a high-intensity tone for their campaign. The second game saw Tujereng bounce back with a thrilling 7-6 win against Sukuta, demonstrating their ability to perform under pressure and secure crucial points.

Match day three brought an unexpected turn of events when Ebo Town failed to appear, granting Tujereng a default victory. This unexpected rest may have fueled their explosive performance in the fourth game.

In their most recent outing, Tujereng delivered a jaw-dropping 22-0 victory over S/K East-Bi. This remarkable win not only highlighted their offensive prowess but also underscored their determination to dominate the tournament.

With these performances, Tujereng is proving to be a formidable contender in the GFF Beach Soccer Tournament 2024, combining tactical skill and sheer tenacity. Fans and competitors alike will be watching closely as they continue their quest for glory.

The Abuse Of Mr. Ebrima Dibba

I listened to the audio that reportedly got Mr Ebrima Dibba arrested and I will get to his choice of words but let me begin by saying that his arrest is nothing but the abuse of the law by the APRC/NPP Government. We saw this same APRC/NPP tactic used against Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, we saw it used against Mr. Madi Jobarteh, we saw it used against my nephew Alagie Bora Sisawo, and we saw it used against Mr Momodou Sabally. Sadly, today, Dr Ismaila Ceesay would probably tell you that his abuse in the hands of the APRC/NPP Government is justified.

That the APRC/NPP Government still relies on laws created by the British to abuse Africans is tragic. We only replaced the colonial overlords with African overlords. What Mr Dibba said may have displeased President Adama Barrow but displeasing Barrow is not a crime! Dr Ismaila Ceesay would have been punished for calling Adama Barrow CLUELESS if that was a crime. What Mr Dibba is going through is nothing but lawfare! Lawfare is the “abuse” of the law to intimidate or harass one’s opponents.

That brings me to our Security Sector Reform! I have argued that the centrality of our security sector reform must revolve around the mindsets of security personnel and civilian authorities overseeing them. Security Sector Reform is on the wrong footing when security forces can be used as tools for the abuse of citizens. You see, Security Sector Reform goes beyond a security force that is answerable to civilian authorities; a reformed security force also means that security forces are positioned to refuse to be the tools used in lawfare. Sadly, in the Gambia, the dictator may have left, but the dictatorship and its attendant mindset mostly remain intact. This is why you still hear our security personnel telling us, “It’s orders from the top.”

Here is a different dimension that we seldom include in our calculations of trying to legislate or enforce laws against hurting the feelings of those with power. In our social system, it is wrong for any of us to speak to or about those older than us using certain injurious language. In Ebrima Dibba’s audio, I heard him say in Mandinka that Adama Barrow knows nothing. In English, that sounds innocent, but in Mandinka, it’s inappropriate to tell someone older than you that they know nothing. Therefore, if we were bound by our traditional norms and values, Ebrima would have been chastised for what he said about Adama Barrow. That we abandoned such traditional values and respect for each other and turned our politics into anything goes is where the problem lies.

On the flip side, I have also heard others, including Adama Barrow and his supporters, speak of Mr Ousainou Darboe, who is much older than him, in ways that would have definitely been frowned upon by our traditional norms of respecting your elders. As the President, Adama Barrow should be at the forefront of engendering respect and values among the people and not someone who disregards, applauds, or remains silent when respect and traditional values are being scorched. One cannot speak ill of the elders of others and insist that they must not speak ill of you! That is why the President must be guided in what he says during his public engagements.

We can politic without injuring our traditional norms and values, we can politic without belittling or lampooning others and we can politic without attacking the person. Wherever political speech supplants mutual respect, it is impolitic! And lawfare is not the solution! What’s happening to Mr Ebrima Dibba is abuse and history is recording the events of abuse as well as those orchestrating it.
