Nearly every day lately, I've seen new emails and DMs from spammers posing as Meta or Facebook that are targeting business pages.
There's always loaded, scary language that the business account is about to be deactivated, locked, shut down, etc. if they don't do something immediately.
I keep marking these as spam and advise my clients to do the same.
Just like with any spam, I see
- urgent language
- forcing login or verification through message
- poor grammar, punctuation, even spelling
- use of name, logo, or address close to the real thing, but not quite right
Real communication from Facebook:
- neutral and merely factual language (you have access, someone has been removed, settings have changed, there's been an update)
- if there's an actual error with an ad or account, you can also find a notification under the bell within Facebook
- Facebook won't send you a DM, that's silly. Those are random people making accounts to look like Facebook.
Don't login from the emailed links.
If you've accidentally logged in through one of their spam links, change your login password right away.
It's a scary time of year 👻 but you don't need to let these scare you.
