Charity Kingston knew something had to change. After the Civil War ended, the redistribution of wealth and property was quick. Pay your assessed taxes or lose your home.

The letter informing her the house would be auctioned arrived months ago. The fees were enormous, and she sold everything to pay the overdue taxes, but it wasn’t enough. The riches she enjoyed, her father put into Confederate money. Now that paper was worthless.

In fact, she used it to start the fireplace this winter. Along with whatever furniture she could burn. The only thing she learned during the Great War was men were irrational when it came to honor and dignity. And now thousands of young men had died for a cause that left them all poor and hungry and lonely.

So many of the young men of Charleston were killed on the battlefields, leaving an entire generation of young women with no one to consider marrying.

She picked up the Groom’s Gazette, a newspaper she splurged on. Women wanted. Angel Creek, Montana. Men seeking a wife. A chance to start over. It would mean abandoning everything she loved.

Could she leave this grand old house, her parents’ graves, and her friends?

A rapid knock on the door sounded, and she sighed wondering if this was the new owners come to take the house and put her out in the streets. For weeks, she expected to be forced from her home.
Sooner or later, she would face them. She walked to the door and slowly pulled it open.

"Miss Kingston?" a dapper looking man said, gazing at her.

The suit he wore was elegant on the handsome, pompous man. All he needed was a carpet bag in his hand, and she would know he was not from this area.

"Yes," she said.

"John Roberts III," he said, holding out his hand. "I've come with a proposition for you. May I come in?"

When her mother and father had been alive, she was told to never allow a man entry into the home when she was alone. But times had changed. Everyone was gone, and in the last year, she taught herself a thing or two about protecting herself. A revolver worked wonders.

"What is it you want to talk about?"

"Your home. I'm going to purchase it," he said.

With a sigh, she knew this day would soon come, but that didn't make it any easier.

"Come in, Mr. Roberts. We can sit in the parlor," she said.

"Somehow, I don't think this is a conversation I'm going to enjoy."

He gave her a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes and a shiver went through her at his cocky air. Leading the way into the only room with furniture, she sank down in the chair, forcing him to sit on her mother's favorite sofa. The only one left in the house. The only one she hadn't been able to part with yet.

"When do you expect me out?"

"I have an opportunity for you. Do you recognize me?"

"Your face is familiar, but I can't remember where we met."

"Have you heard of the Charleston Gentleman's Club," he asked. "In one month, I'll own your home and my plans are to turn it into a place where upper class gentleman will be entertained."

A sick queasiness filled her stomach as she remembered hearing rumors about the place. A bo****lo, which only accepted the most beautiful women. A place where carpetbaggers spent time with the ladies.

His eyes swept over her, lingering on her breasts. Nausea was quickly replaced with anger firing like a match striking flint. The nerve of his pompous ass to think she would become one of his women. No, no, no. No matter how desperate she became, she would not live her life as a w***e, letting men have their way with her.

"As long as you work for me, I'm prepared to let you stay in the house. It will become a place where discerning gentlemen spend time with you or any of the girls living here."

Her mother must’ve been turning over in her grave at this moment. The thought of her family home becoming a w***ehouse was too much.

"Are you a virgin?"

The question had her Irish temper sparking, ready to erupt.
"That, sir, is none of your business."

A smile spread across his face. "So you are. Great. As beautiful as you are, your virginity will bring in a high price. We'll hold an auction and split the proceeds. With all that gorgeous auburn hair, you'll fetch a nice sum of money.”

The hell she would.

Glancing around the place, he shook his head. "The house will need a lot of work to get ready. You'll be able to remain here in your home as long as you are one of my girls."

Her hands clenched, her Irish ire surging like a gator chasing prey through the swampland. Taking a deep breath, she reminded herself it would be better to appear cordial than to outright denounce his scheme. Better to make arrangements to escape than unleash her volatile temper on the pimp.

Wanting him out of the house now, she stood. "Mr. Roberts, I think it's time you left."

"I'll give you time to contemplate my proposal. The tax office said we'll close in thirty days. After that, I'll be sending the workers over to do reconstruction. Once the house is ready, we'll open for business and hold the auction."

Rising, he smiled at her, and then he reached out and ran his hand down her cheek. No man touched her, and she reacted by slapping the man. “Get out of my house, now.”

He grinned. “You've got s***k. Your beauty will make us both a lot of money. If you decide against my offer, be out of the house by the first of next month."

The man needed to leave now, before her temper exploded. She walked to the front door and opened it. While she still owned her home, she had control over the trash.

"Good day, Mr. Roberts."

With a tip of his hat, he strolled onto the sidewalk, and she slammed the door. Time to meet with the girls and tell them of her decision—to leave. How wonderful it would be if they decided to join her in Montana.
