Something is rotten in the state of Denmark - long considered the most liberal of the Scandinavian countries. In 2005-2006, Denmark and its newspaper Jyllands-Posten achieved worldwide fame for taking a strong stance for press freedom during the Muhammad cartoons controversy. The Norwegian political class used to keep a ten-foot-pole distance - liberal Denmark was viewed as "the ugly duckling". However, 17 years later, the Danish Parliament passed a legal ban on burning the Quran, and there are no longer any mainstream Danish newspapers fighting for press freedom.
- On Wed 17 Jan, renowned journalist Mikael Jalving, formerly at Jyllands-Posten, will present at Document.no's conference on these different extremes, which illustrate a political journey that until recently was next to unimaginable.
