लैंडर का नाम अंतरिक्ष कार्यक्रम के जनक और इसरो संस्थापक विक्रम साराभाई के नाम पर रखा गया है।
रोवर का नाम 'प्रज्ञान' क्योंकि 'प्रज्ञान' ज्ञान व सर्वोच्च बुद्धिमता से जुड़ा संस्कृत शब्द है।
Mission
राजस्थान के जैसलमेर में वैज्ञानिकों ने शाकाहारी डायनासोर के संबंध में एक बड़ी खोज की है. आईआईटी रुड़की और भारतीय भूवैज्ञानिक सर्वेक्षण (GSI) ने जैसलमेर जिला मुख्यालय से करीब 20 किलोमीटर दूर जेठवाई क्षेत्र में 16.7 करोड़ साल पुराना दुनिया का सबसे पुराना शाकाहारी डायनासोर का जीवाश्म ढूंढ निकाला है.
इससे यह पुष्टि हुई है कि कच्छ बेसिन से सटे इस क्षेत्र में 16.7 करोड़ साल पहले शाकाहारी डायनासोर रहते थे. जैसलमेर के थार रेगिस्तान में मिले इस जीवाश्म को 'थारोसोरस इंडिकस यानी भारत के थार का डायनासोर नाम दिया गया है. इससे पहले भी 2014 और 2016 में जैसलमेक के इसी जेठवाई व थैयात गांव में करोड़ों साल पहले डायनोसोर के जीवाश्म मिले थे.
वैज्ञानिकों के अनुसार जैसलमेर का ये क्षेत्र डायनासोर बेसिन हो सकता हैं, यहां पर लगातार मिल रहे जीवाश्मों के अवशेषों के को देखते हुए कच्छ बेसिन से लगते इस सिस्टर बेसिन में और भी डायनासोर की प्रजातियों के अवशेष मिल सकते है. वैसे डायनासोर की प्रजातियों का रंग ब्राउन होता था और ये छोटे-बड़े शतुमुर्ग की तरह दिखते थे..
असल में जैसलमेर के जेठवाई क्षेत्र में में वैज्ञानिकों ने दुनिया के सबसे पुराने शाकाहारी डायनासोर 'थारोसोरस इंडिकस' के जीवाश्म खोजने का दावा किया है. वैज्ञानिकों ने बताया कि रेगिस्तान में मिले थारोसोरस की रीढ़ लंबी थी और सिर पर ठोस नोक होती थी. ये जीवाश्म चीन में मिले जीवाश्म से भी पुराने हैं.
