The Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) in Equatorial Guinea, Baltasar Engonga, has been arrested for allegedly recording more than 400 explicit videos involving the wives of prominent figures in the country.

The scandal unfolded during a fraud investigation targeting the 54-year-old economist, leading to an unannounced search of his residence and office by ANIF officials. The search revealed numerous CDs containing recordings that exposed his encounters with various married women.

The videos reportedly feature high-profile women, including Engonga’s brother’s wife, his cousin, the sister of the President, the wife of the Director General of Police, and the spouses of nearly 20 government ministers, among others.

The recordings, found in Engonga’s office, were said to have been consensual. However, the content has since leaked online, creating widespread media outrage.

According to the local news outlet, Ahora EG, Engonga had been entangled in an unprecedented s*xual scandal since last October, involving multiple women, some of whom were married. The report detailed that some of these encounters took place within his office, with moments captured next to the national flag. The Executive Office has responded, emphasizing that the scandal tarnishes the nation’s image and pledging measures to reinforce ethical conduct among public officials.

A statement from Ahora EG highlighted, “The most alarming aspect is that some scenes were filmed in his work office, including instances of intimacy with a woman near the National Flag. The government has expressed that the decision to act swiftly aligns with its goal of promoting respect and professionalism within the public sector.”

The report also noted that Engonga, known by his nickname “Bello,” engaged in unprotected s*x with influential married and single women in various locations, including hotels, private homes, and even within the Ministry of Finance.

Addressing the viral recordings, Equatorial Guinea’s Attorney General, Nzang Nguema, pointed out that while the images do not imply coercion, consensual acts of this nature are not criminal unless force or violence is involved. Nguema urged victims of s*xual abuse or coercion to come forward to facilitate proper legal action. He also highlighted the potential public health risks posed by unprotected s*xual encounters, which could endanger both partners and the wider community.

On Monday, the Equatorial Guinean government announced the suspension of all officials found to have engaged in inappropriate conduct within ministry offices as part of its “zero tolerance” approach to misconduct that undermines public trust. Vice President Nguema Mangue reaffirmed that such actions violate the Code of Conduct and Public Ethics Law, emphasizing, “Ethics and respect are fundamental in our Administration. We will not tolerate any conduct that risks the trust of our citizens.”

Tinubu Government Scraps Niger Delta and Sports Ministries, Creates New Commissions

President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council (FEC) have dissolved the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development.

This was announced by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, through a post on his official X account on Wednesday.

According to Onanuga, the decision was made during a Federal Executive Council meeting held in Abuja. He explained that a new Ministry of Regional Development has been created to oversee all regional development commissions. These include the Niger Delta Development Commission, the North West Development Commission, the South West Development Commission, and the North East Development Commission.

Additionally, Onanuga revealed that the National Sports Commission will now assume the responsibilities previously handled by the Ministry of Sports Development.

At the same meeting, the president H.E. Bola Tinubu also approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy.

The journalist alleged that Lagbaja had died of stage three cancer in a foreign hospital 48 hours earlier, and the information was being kept secret due to power struggles within the military. The post stated: “The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has died. Lagbaja died in an undisclosed hospital overseas nearly 48 hours ago from stage three cancer, according to a senior government official. His death has been kept quiet due to intense lobbying by some generals eyeing the position.”

The Army swiftly refuted the claims on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, calling the reports "fake news."

However, sources within the Army Headquarters confirmed that Lagbaja is critically ill. One insider stated, "The COAS is not dead. He is critically ill at the moment. We should be praying for him at this critical time and not spreading false rumors."

Another source mentioned that Lagbaja had traveled abroad for medical treatment but stressed that no official information regarding his death had been received. "He is out of the country for treatment. I haven't heard of his death from any reliable source, and it's unlikely such news could be concealed."

Attempts to reach the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, for confirmation were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off, and he had not yet responded to inquiries.

Osinbajo says it is becoming increasingly challenging to find people of integrity

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has emphasized the value of integrity, noting that while it remains crucial, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find individuals with this quality in the country. Despite its scarcity, Osinbajo highlighted that people with integrity are in high demand—even among those with questionable character.

Addressing students at the matriculation ceremony of MIVA Open University in Abuja, Osinbajo stressed that integrity is a long-term asset. He stated that life should be seen as a marathon, where trustworthy individuals ultimately succeed.

“If you borrow money, you should pay it back. Don’t make promises you can’t fulfil. Integrity pays. It is getting scarcer. It’s becoming more difficult to find people of integrity. So, it is in high demand. And I can say that because people of integrity are in demand; they are much sought after by everyone,” Osinbajo remarked.

He continued, “Even thieves are looking for men and women of integrity to keep their stolen money with. Life is a marathon. It’s not a hundred-metre race. The person who will last in that marathon is trustworthy because trust is the currency of business and interpersonal relationships. If you are known to have no integrity, everyone will soon know it.”

Shifting focus to the future of education, Osinbajo suggested that micro-education could potentially challenge the dominance of traditional university degrees. With the world of work rapidly evolving, he noted that education systems need to adapt to meet these changes.

“Adaptive learning platforms can now, as you know, use artificial intelligence to design coursework that meets the specific needs of every individual student and the best pace at which to teach each student,” he said.

He further explained that the way education is delivered and the content taught will change significantly in the coming years. This shift will be driven by the demands of the marketplace, which increasingly prioritizes skills over traditional qualifications, as well as the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

“The change is motivated by the type and quality of employees that the market wants today and that the market will take for granted tomorrow. It is also influenced by how technology, especially artificial intelligence and machine learning, is rapidly transforming business, the professions, and the entire marketplace,” Osinbajo added.

He concluded by calling for an evolution in teaching methods, emphasizing the need for education to move beyond traditional curricula and focus on developing real-world problem-solving skills.

“In employment criteria, the emphasis now is not on how much information one has but on how it can be used to solve real-life problems, which are multifaceted and not tied to the curricula of many of the old and existing disciplines,” he stated.

Nigerian Army Assures Public of Continued Leadership Despite COAS’s Absence

The Nigerian Army has reassured the public that the temporary absence of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has not resulted in any leadership vacuum within the service.

In a statement released on Saturday by the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Army clarified that Lt. Gen. Lagbaja is currently on official leave. During this period, Major General Abdulsalami Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), has been designated to act on behalf of the COAS, ensuring continuity of leadership.

Maj. Gen. Nwachukwu stated, “There have been insinuations suggesting a leadership vacuum and confusion among officers. This is completely unfounded.”

He emphasized that the Nigerian Army is a highly organized institution with well-established protocols for managing various situations. “Prior to going on leave, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja ensured that the necessary procedures were in place, assigning Major General Abdulsalami Bagudu Ibrahim to act in his stead.”

Nwachukwu added that it is not unusual for senior military leaders to be absent for extended periods due to unforeseen circumstances, and during such times, the Chief of Policy and Plans takes over. “This has happened in the past, with no disruptions to the operations of the Army. The claims of a leadership gap are mere speculation, as all scheduled activities within the service are proceeding as planned.”

Furthermore, he clarified that the COAS’s absence has not delayed promotions, citing the recent release of the Captain-to-Major promotion exam results, which were approved by the acting Chief of Policy and Plans.

APC Dominates Kaduna Local Government Elections, Wins All Chairmanship and Councillorship Seats

The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (KAD-SIECOM) has declared the results of the local government chairmanship and councillorship elections held across the state on Saturday. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secured victories in all 23 local government chairmanship positions as well as the 255 councillorship seats.

Announcing the results, KAD-SIECOM chairman Hajara Mohammed revealed that eight political parties participated in the elections. These included the APC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and others. Mohammed affirmed the legitimacy of the results submitted by the returning officers, confirming that the APC had swept all available seats.

She stated, "By the power vested in the Commission, I hereby confirm the results as follows: APC won the 23 local government chairmanship positions and the 255 ward councillorship positions across the state."

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, lauded the electoral process, describing it as peaceful, free, and fair. Speaking after casting his vote at a polling unit in the Kawo area of Kaduna, he expressed his satisfaction with the conduct of the elections, noting that only minor issues had been reported in three polling units.

Chevron and NNPC Announce Significant Oil Discovery in Western Niger Delta

The joint venture between NNPC Limited and Chevron Nigeria Limited (NNPC-CNL JV) has announced a major oil discovery following the successful drilling of the Meji NW-1 well in Petroleum Mining Lease (PML) 49, located in the shallow offshore region of the Western Niger Delta.

This region, now governed by the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, continues to be a critical part of Nigeria’s energy production landscape.

In a statement released on Friday, Chevron’s General Manager of Policy, Government, and Public Affairs, Olusoga Oduselu, confirmed the discovery. The well was spud on September 2, 2024, and reached a total depth of 8,983 feet by September 13.

The drilling revealed approximately 690 feet of hydrocarbon-bearing Miocene sands, expanding the productive Meji field. Drilling operations concluded on October 2, and the rig has since left the site.

NNPC and Oil Marketers Reach Agreement on New Fuel Price, Loading Begins

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has reached an agreement with the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) to lower the ex-depot price of petrol to N955 per litre. This comes after successful negotiations, as confirmed by IPMAN President, Abubakar Maigandi.

This agreement marks the resolution of a dispute between IPMAN and NNPC, clearing the way for the resumption of fuel loading at depots nationwide. The disagreement stemmed from the ex-depot pricing of petrol sourced from the Dangote Refinery, which was set at N1,010 per litre in Lagos. IPMAN argued that NNPC’s price was higher than what they paid for the product from the refinery, leading them to demand refunds for deposits made to NNPC.

Following the intervention of the Department of State Services (DSS), NNPC revised the price to N955 per litre, Maigandi confirmed. He added that in Lagos, fuel would be loaded at N995 per litre and expected that loading would commence shortly, ensuring the availability of the product.

Regarding NNPC’s role in supplying petrol from the Dangote Refinery, Maigandi noted that negotiations are ongoing. He stated that once finalized, IPMAN would begin sourcing petrol directly from Dangote.

Tragedy in Jigawa: Over 100 Dead, 50 Hospitalized After Petrol Tanker Explosion

More than 100 people have reportedly lost their lives, and over 50 others have been hospitalized after a petrol tanker accident in Majiya village, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 am on Wednesday when the tanker crashed. As fuel spilled into the village’s gutters and drainages, local residents attempted to collect the petrol, leading to a deadly explosion.

Jigawa State Police spokesperson, DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams, confirmed the event in a statement.

He explained, "A petrol tanker from Port Harcourt en route to Nguru in Yobe State lost control and crashed at Majiya village. The villagers began fetching the spilled fuel, which then ignited into flames."

Authorities have confirmed that 95 people died at the scene, with over 50 currently receiving medical treatment.

A mass burial for the victims began Wednesday morning, as the community grieves this devastating loss.

Lagos Government Clarifies: No Ban on Sachet Water and PET Bottles

The Lagos State Government has clarified that the forthcoming ban on single-use plastics and Styrofoam, scheduled to take effect in January 2025, will not affect sachet water or PET bottles.

This clarification was provided by Mr. Bankole Michael Omoniyi, Director of Climate Change and Environmental Planning at the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, during a recent episode of the Tiwa Talks Green Podcast, titled "Understanding the Ban on Single-Use Plastics and Styrofoam (Government Perspective)," released on Monday.

Omoniyi explained that the ban is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to combat environmental pollution, specifically targeting items such as plastic bags thinner than 40 microns, plastic cutlery, cups, and straws. He emphasized, “We banned nylon bags, plastic cutleries, straws, and Styrofoam cups and plates. At no point did we say that PET bottles and sachet nylons were banned.”

Styrofoam, in particular, has been identified as a major contributor to environmental issues in Lagos. Omoniyi highlighted the environmental damage caused by Styrofoam, pointing to areas like Surulere where clogged drainage systems have worsened flooding and increased health risks such as cholera.

"The use of Styrofoam has led to clogged drainage channels, exacerbated flooding, and contributed to climate change and diseases like cholera," Omoniyi noted.

To address these concerns, the Lagos State Government is encouraging the adoption of greener practices. Omoniyi also discussed ongoing dialogues with manufacturers regarding their role in managing plastic waste through extended producer responsibility (EPR).

“We are proposing two approaches: first, we want every stakeholder and manufacturer in the plastic value chain to agree to extended producer responsibility. This could involve the creation of collection centres where waste can be aggregated and recycled. Secondly, we are exploring the possibility of a plastic management fund, where all stakeholders in the value chain contribute to proper waste management,” he explained.

This clarification follows the initial announcement by the Lagos State Government of plans to ban single-use plastics and Styrofoam starting in January 2024. However, the ban has since been extended to January 2025.

Court Orders Removal of Defamatory Posts on Falana and Falz

The Lagos State High Court has ordered Martin Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, to take down defamatory comments and videos about prominent lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), and his son, musician Folarin Falana, also known as Falz.

Justice M. O. Idowu issued the order while ruling on suit no. ID/8584/GCM/2024 on Tuesday.

The case involved posts made by VeryDarkMan on September 24, 2024, across his social media platforms, which falsely linked Bobrisky, a controversial public figure, to Falana and his son. The court ruled that these statements were defamatory and harmful to their reputations.

The judge noted that, according to the plaintiffs, Falana and Falz, VeryDarkMan knew the statements were false but still published them with the intent to damage their public image.

“Furthermore, the defamatory content continues to trend on VeryDarkMan's online platforms, prolonging the harm to the plaintiffs' reputations as long as the posts remain accessible," the judge added.

The controversy arose from claims made by VeryDarkMan, alleging that Femi Falana and Falz were involved in efforts to secure a presidential pardon for Bobrisky, who had been sentenced to six months for naira abuse. According to the posts, Bobrisky claimed that the Falanas sought to arrange her pardon in exchange for N10 million.
