San Diego Police Officer Killed in the Line of Duty, Another Critically Injured
San Diego – Late Monday night, two San Diego Police Officers responding to a vehicle pursuit were involved in a collision near the 5200 block of Clairemont Mesa Blvd. in San Diego.
Tragically, San Diego Police Officer Austin Machitar lost his life in the incident. Officer Machitar joined the department in 2019 and was assigned to patrol at SDPD’s Northern Division. During his time with SDPD, Officer Machitar served as a Field Training Officer and took an active role in recruiting new officers by participating in recruiting videos and photoshoots for the department. Officer Machitar was 30 years old.
Officer Zach Martinez, who was also involved in the collision, is in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. Officer Martinez has been with SDPD for 1.5 years and is assigned to patrol at SDPD’s Northern Division. Officer Martinez was a former trainee of Officer Machitar in December 2023, and occasionally the two would ride together on patrol shifts. Officer Martinez is 27 years old.
The suspect in the incident died at the scene.
Due to the enormity of the situation, the San Diego Police Department requested the California Highway Patrol conduct an independent investigation of the collision. This is an ongoing investigation.

Carjacking suspect arrested after pursuit, rollover crash
The incident occurred on Sunday at about 1:25am. Sheriff's Deputies responded to the 900 block of S. Santa Fe Avenue to investigate a report of a carjacking. It was reported that 5 males, armed with handguns, forced the victim out of their car. The victim was not injured during the incident. Deputies began a coordinated search of the area and located the vehicle around W. Vista Way and Emerald Drive. Deputies attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, but the driver fled, and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended after the driver of the stolen vehicle crashed into a small median. At the time of the collision, the stolen vehicle was occupied by only one suspect. The suspect, an adult male, was taken into custody without incident and transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. This is an ongoing investigation and the suspect’s identity is being withheld at this time.

A carjacking suspect is in custody this morning after a pursuit and rollover crash in Vista, authorities say.
Shortly before 1:30 AM, deputies responded to a carjacking in the 900 block of S Santa Fe Avenue. It was determined that the vehicle, a 2003 Mazda hatchback, was stolen from the victim by multiple armed suspects, all of which had fled the scene.
Deputies began canvassing the area, and the vehicle was soon located near the intersection of Date Street & Grapevine Road. A traffic stop was initiated, but the driver fled, prompting a pursuit that came to an end when the suspect flipped the vehicle outside of a Raising Cane’s restaurant in the 300 block of Vista Village Drive.
Deputies could be seen pulling the driver out of the car’s window before he was arrested and transported to a local hospital. It is unclear at this time if anyone else has been taken into custody.

Crash Victim Rescued After Major Crash
A 53-year old male driving a 2008 Lincoln Town Car was driving southbound on 4800 Fairmount Avenue. For an unknown reason the male lost control of his vehicle and struck the embankment on the west side of the road. A 24-year-old female was driving her 2005 Acura behind the male. The female was unable to avoid the Lincoln Town Car and collided into the side of the vehicle. The male sustained a brain bleed and was transported to a local hospital. The female suffered a complaint of pain. Alcohol was not a factor in the collision. Traffic Division units responded to the scene and are handling the investigation.

Pursuit ends in deadly freeway crash
On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at approximately 7:44 p.m., a 42-year-old male from San Diego, CA was driving a Toyota Prius and fleeing from San Diego Police Department (SDPD) units on State Route 15 (SR-15) southbound, transition to State Route 94 (SR-94) westbound. For reasons under investigation, the driver lost control of the Toyota and subsequently overturned.
The driver was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. There were no other occupants in the Toyota. A toxicology report is pending to determine if alcohol/and or drugs were a factor in the crash. I-15 southbound to SR-94 westbound and SR-94 westbound at I-15 southbound were closed to facilitate the investigation.
The cause and sequence of events are under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) San Diego Area. The name of the decedent is being withheld pending notification to the next of kin by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office. Owner fires gunshot amid jewelry store heist
The suspect, a heavy set male, unknown age, 5'10" to 6' walked into the store with a hammer. The suspect approached and smashed two display cases, grabbing several jewelry items. The clerk yelled and the owner/victim came from the back office with his firearm and fired one round into the ceiling. The suspect ran out of the store northbound. The victim attempted to follow the suspect but was unable to locate him. The suspect was wearing a black hat, blue/green camouflage face mask, gloves, black long sleeve shirt and black pants. Robbery and Northeastern 's Detective Sergeant were notified and responded to the scene. Nobody was injured during the robbery and the loss is undetermined at this time.

Sheriff's Investigating Parking Lot Shooting
The Lakeside Sheriff's Substation is investigating a shooting that sent a man to the hospital.
It happened on Monday, August 19, just after midnight. Sheriff's Deputies were called to the 12000 block of Woodside Avenue for a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a 24-year-old man who had been shot multiple times. He was taken to the hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.
Based on a preliminary investigation by deputies, it appears the victim was shot by an unknown suspect in a nearby restaurant parking lot. At this time, it is not known what led to the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.

Driver killed after guardrail impales vehicle (w/ SOT)
A guardrail went through a vehicle this morning in a crash that left one person dead in Escondido, authorities say.
The incident was first reported at about 2:40 AM on the transition ramp from the northbound lanes of Interstate 15 to the eastbound lanes of State Route 78. First responders arrived to find that a guardrail had gone through an Acura sedan.
The driver, who was the only occupant of the car, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The sedan was the only vehicle involved in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The transition ramp is expected to remain closed until about 9 AM as the investigation and subsequent repairs unfold. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the CHP Oceanside Area office at (760) 643-3400.

Traffic on Interstate 15 in Fallbrook is impacted this evening after a fiery crash that caused nearby vegetation to ignite, authorities say.
The collision was reported shortly before 7:30 PM in the northbound lanes of the freeway near State Route 76. First responders arrived to find a vehicle and adjacent brush on fire, causing smoke to be seen for miles in the surrounding area.

Fatal Pursuit Crash
Officers conducted a traffic stop on a 2019 Harley Davidson motorcycle for a traffic violation at 6200 Imperial Avenue. The motorcycle was operated by a 25 year old male, with a 23 year old female passenger. During the stop the officers discovered the male individual had a felony arrest warrant. The officers informed the male individual that he was under arrest. The male individual fled the scene traveling westbound on Imperial Avenue before officers were able to initiate pursuit. The motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed, and collided with two parked vehicles at 5200 Imperial Avenue. The operator and his passenger were ejected from the motorcycle. The operator was pronounced deceased at the scene. The passenger sustained an amputation to her left leg and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Her injuries were determined to be life threatening. S.D.P.D. Traffic Division responded and is handling the
investigation. Alcohol was determined to not be a factor in the collision.

One person is dead and another is injured this evening after a rollover crash in Vista, authorities say.
The incident was reported shortly after 7 PM in the 2000 block of Buena Creek Road. Fire personnel arrived to find an SUV that had rolled over before coming to a rest against an embankment. One person was pronounced deceased at the scene, and one other was rushed to a local hospital.
Initial reports suggest at least one person was ejected from the vehicle, however officials could not immediately confirm that detail. Both directions of Buena Creek Road are closed as the investigation unfolds.
