**UPDATED

THE PRESIDENT
President Biden and The First Lady are at their home in Wilmington Delaware

START of the formal White House news day this Friday December 31, 2021 is 11:00 AM EST.

Today The President has scheduled no formal public events.
-The President's schedule is subject to change without notice.

YESTERDAY at 3:37 PM EST, according to a White House source, President Biden began a private phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Conversation between the two leaders ended at 4:25 PM EST per sources. The discuss a range of topics, including upcoming diplomatic engagements with Russia. The call will take place in Wilmington, Delaware.

At about 5:30 PM White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki provided a Statement about the conversation between President Biden and Russian President Putin. In the Statement at the very top Press Secretary Psaki noted the President's motivation for the call was to push for a de-escalation of tensions with Ukraine. Russia has amassed an estimated 100,000 troops along the border area with Ukraine as well as some equipment characterized as worrisome in its 'non-static' nature. In 2014 masked, unmarked Russian troops crossed the border and advanced into Ukraine, illegally occupying and annexing the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine's Eastern region. They dissolved Crimea's legitimate government and installed their own man as a new pro-Russia "Prime Minister."
In yesterday's Statement, Press Secretary Psaki reiterated President Biden's commitment to diplomacy and restated the warning that any additional aggression by Russia against Ukraine would be met with a decisive response by the "United States and its allies and partners." to impose significant costs.

In a background briefing call a Senior Administration Official told press the comprehensive response could "..include economic costs, include adjustments and augmentations of NATO force posture in Allied countries, and include additional assistance to Ukraine to enable it to further defend itself and its territory,.."

Ahead, the two leaders with their delegations will meet for a bilateral Strategic Stability Dialogue currently scheduled for January 9-10 in Geneva. Two days later NATO has scheduled a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council on January 12 in Brussels. Then also, on January 13 the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Permanent Council will meet for discussions about tensions along the border region between Russia and Ukraine.

The formal White House news day was closed at 4:27 PM yesterday, Thursday December 30, 2021.
