How do you find your life's purpose?

Thanksgiving, I went up on stage. 15 people were in the audience. A small number.

It didn’t matter. It was an American holiday so nobody in the audience was from the US except my two daughters.

So I didn’t use my regular material. I just said, “We’re like a United Nations here. Tell me your countries and I will solve all of your problems.”

And for the next 20 minutes we had a blast. I was happy. I was in love. I was free.

Sometimes my purpose (and there’s been more than one) has made me millions. Sometimes it has helped me find love.

And sometimes it just makes people laugh. Even my two daughters.

IMAGINE you can find your purpose, master it, be known for it, make friends because of it, meet the best in the world at what you love.

I know it is possible because I have done it and it’s changed my life over and over at my absolute worst moments.

I looked back at every time I’ve found a purpose. How did I put the 10,000 puzzle pieces spread all over my brain back together into a beautiful picture.

ANSWER:

By now, you want to find your purpose. I will tell you how I did it and how the hundreds of others I’ve interviewed about this exact topic did it:

You realize what purpose means.
you build a foundation of habits so purpose becomes easy.
you find the clues
you learn what to do with the clues.
There’s no one purpose in life. There are many.

What were the clues? I analyzed. Then I spoke to hundreds of other people who had found their purposes. Everyone ranging from Richard Branson to Tyra Banks to super race car driver Danica Patrick to former world chess champion Garry Kasparov to writers like Ken Follett, Judy Blue to self-help gurus like Tony Robbins and Wayne Dyer and many more.

How do you find your purpose? How do you put together that puzzle.

And when I was so ashamed of losing wife house money life purpose I had to figure out how to live LIVE find the foundation that could lift my life so I was ready for purpose.

FIRST: A DAILY PRACTICE

Without a solid foundation, you can’t create a building that will reach for the sky.

I do this every day. Improve 1% (whatever that means) in each of these areas:

PHYSICAL: Eat, Move, Sleep. If you’re in bed sick, then a purpose will do you no good.

EMOTIONAL: Trim the toxic people (even if they are “friends” or family) and be with the people who love you and support you and you love and support.

If you are constantly angry or resentful or nervous about your relationships, your purpose will forget you.

MENTAL: Exercise your Creativity Muscle every day. If you aren’t creative every day, the muscle will atrophy. And if you are creative every day (just write down 10 ideas a day on a pad) it will become a Creativity Super Power.

Without that super power you will have no chance of finding a purpose and then exceeding what’s been done before. Finding your own unique voice that will make you rise above everyone else.

SPIRITUAL: Not in a prayer sense (although it could be). Not in a meditation sense (although it could be). Not in an “Angels” sense (ok, it won’t be that) but a feeling that you can’t control everything. Only focus on the things within your control. No anxiety or regret or resentment about what you can’t.

I do this Daily Practice every day. Without it, there’s no way to find purpose.

If I don’t do it, within a week or so the first thoughts of depression, anger, resentment, or worse start to take hold.

I die while I’m still alive.

FINDING A PURPOSE FAQ:

Rule #1: There is no “one purpose”.

Bill Gates had a purpose. Take a piece of software and get everyone in the world to use it.

Now he has another purpose: stop Malaria in Africa.

Every athlete has a purpose: play football, basketball, skateboarding, whatever.

But then they retire and find other purposes. I spoke to Tony Hawk, who was 11 time World Skateboarding Champion. Now he makes the best video games out there for skateboarders.

I spoke to Garry Kasparov, former World Chess Champion for 20 years and still one of the best chess players in the world. Now he fights for human rights in Russia.

(playing chess with Garry Kasparov. Check out who won).

I spoke to Arianna Huffington. She wanted a platform to share news that was more accurate and powerful than traditional news sources. Now she writes books about the amazing benefits of Sleep.

For me, I thought my purpose was to be an astronaut, then a computer software guy, then a billionaire, then a writer, then make a TV show, then a comedian. Then and then and then.

I’m always hunting for the things that give me such pleasure it’s like I’m walking around in a living cloud of purpose.

RULE #2: How do you find the clues to your purpose?

I asked Danica Patrick, the highest ranking female race car driver ever.

She told me three of her ideas:

(talking to Danica Patrick, race car driver extraordinaire).

a) Ask yourself, How would you structure the ideal day?

b) What photos are on your phone? The thing you take the most photos of might contain a clue.

c) What makes you most energized? List everything you did this past month and then rank them by how happy you were when you were doing that activity.

These all lead to clues as to your purpose.

Let me add a few more.

d) What were you most interested in at ages 12–15? How have they aged?

For instance, if you loved basketball but now your are 50 years old maybe you can write a blog about basketball, or make a fantasy sports league about basketball or maybe be a basketball coach or write a book or make basketball clothing or maybe music for basketball teams.

Jesse Itzler was a failed rapper. He loved rap but his songs just wouldn’t break out (see Jesse Jaymes, “White Girls”).

(Jesse Itzler, aka Jesse Jaymes)

But interests age and change as we get older. He started making songs that sports teams would use as their anthems during games.

He built that business and sold it.

Then he flew on a private plane. He thought, “this is amazing! But more people should have access to this.” So he created Marquis Jets, a service that allowed for people to fly on private jets without owning a jet. He sold that to Netjets which sold to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.

But old interests don’t just go away. Now Jesse is back to his interest in sports. He doesn’t play basketball. But he OWNS the Atlanta Hawks. After starting off his career with $0 in the bank.

I loved writing when I was 12 years old. I kept a notebook about who liked who in my class.

That wouldn’t work now (Facebook does that trick without any help) but I love to write every day. I write 3000 words a day every day since 1990. 21 books later I’m happy with the result. It took writing every day from 1990 until 2004 before my first book came out.

(my daughter, crushing me at poker. Maybe will turn into her purpose?)

e) Purpose S*x

If you love music and you love sports, what about music for sports teams. See the Jesse Itzler example above.

If you love psychology and you love economics, what about creating the field of behavioral economics and then winning the Nobel Prize like Daniel Kahneman.

If you love Media and you love Astronomy, create books, shows, podcasts, explaining Astronomy to laymen like Neil deGrasse Tyson.

(Neil shows me how to make an atomic bomb using the formula e=mc2)

I loved investing and I loved writing software. So first I created software to help me trade the markets. Then I created a website called Stockpickr that was thinly social media site out there devoted just to investors.

f) What are you AFRAID to do.

In 1996, every Monday I’d get to the Luna Lounge on Ludlow Street an hour early. I’d wait on line so I’d get a good seat.

It was comedy night at the Luna Lounge. All the up and coming beginning comedians would perform. People like Amy Poehler, Marc Maron, Michael Ian Black, and on and on.

Then I’d even go to the Aspen Comedy Festival. Unknowns like Dave Chappelle, Louis CK, etc would perform.

I wanted so badly to try it. But I was terrified. TERR. A . FIED.

It took many years before I realized that I loved going a bit past my comfort zone and trying new things.

So finally I challenged myself to try it.

I was scared to DEATH.

Three years later, I now perform all over 3–4x a week. I even own part of a comedy club (Standup NY on 78th and Broadway. Stop by!)

It’s a real passion for me. I have no goal or agenda. I make no money doing it. I just love doing it.

My two daughters don’t like when I make fun of them but that’s part of life. Grow up!

You’re only afraid to do something if it’s important to you.

if it’s important to you, it might be a clue as to what your purpose is.

g) What section of the bookstore would you read all the books in.

When I was a kid I’d go to the chess section of the bookstore.

Yes, at Coliseum Books on 57th and 7th there was an entire section devoted to chess.

One by one I’d buy all the books. I was obsessed. I’d read each one. Very quickly I won my state’s junior chess championship and I got the ranking of “master”.

This has helped me in every other area of life (since people assume that chess mastery equals intelligence).

In 2002 it was the Investing section of the bookstore. In 1998 it was the poker section. In 1992 it was the short story section. In 2017 it was the comedy section. in 1995 it was the “World Wide Web” section. In 1996 it was the “Television” section. In 1980 it was the “politics” section. In 1982 it was the “Psychic Powers” section.

Because, you know…with psychic powers I could become invisible and control people and fly.

What do you do once you find clues to your purpose?

a) list all the ways you can spend more and more of your day involved in that purpose.

b) find a community of people who love that purpose just like you do. Compare notes. Learn. Help people. Find mentors.

c) read as much as you can about that purpose. Read the history, read the biographies of the greats. Read all of the current thinking.

You need to do this to discover your unique voice.

d) Purpose s*x. See above.

e) DO. Start doing things that make a name for yourself in that purpose.

When I got fascinated with investing in 2002 I read every book. Then I wrote software modeling the markets. Then I started sharing my results with others and they would invest with me. Then I started writing about investing (purpose s*x). Then I built a website devoted to investors. Then I built businesses around investing. And, of course, I learned every strategy of investing and started investing more and more successfully.

DIVERSIFY YOUR PURPOSE

I don’t like to feel horrible.

And if you throw your whole life into something, sometimes you will succeed and sometimes you will fail.

When I fail, it feels horrible. Of course I will try to learn from failure. Of course, failure can propel one to success.

But it feels like death.

When I “invest in myself” I make sure I diversify.

I never have one passion or purpose that I am pursuing. Because if you bet everything on Red, you can lose everything.

But when one thing is not going so well for me I switch to other interests I am passionate about.

This makes me feel better. Gives me ideas for the other things I am interested in. Clears my head so I can learn better from my failures.

And makes me a happier person in general:

Community. I meet other life-minded people
Improvement. I start to achieve mastery in the things I am in love with.
Freedom.
What is freedom?

The ability to spend more and more of your day making decisions that are your choice and nobody else’s.

In other words, the reason for being ALIVE.

How can someone in their late 20's discover their talents and purpose in life?

I decided to become a doctor in 8th grade and spent the rest of my life in fear. Fear of the next test. Fear of not getting into Med School. Fear of not making it through Med School. Fear of not having a high enough class standing to get into a tolerable specialty.

I chose to specialize in Pathology out of fear, largely. Fear of a lot of things, including being sued by patients if I went into clinical practice. Four long miserable years later, I got my first job and was never more afraid in my life. My voice trembled as I dictated my first diagnoses alone in a small room full of toxic chemicals. Typical environment of a pathologist.

For the next 26 years, fear was the strongest force in my pathology practice. Fear of making an inaccurate diagnosis. Fear of not pleasing the surgeons and having one of them ruin my reputation. Fear of my first lawsuit (which never came). Fear of not passing the residency inspection when I was the pathology program director at LLUMC. Finally, at age 58, after 26 years of relentless torture, I'd had enough. I quit medicine.

It was one of the best decisions of my life. I feel human now. I remember this odd sensation from childhood. The absence of constant fear.

If I were in my 20's again, I'd get a PhD in genetics so I could write books about Intelligent Design (like Steven Meyer is doing with "Signature in the Cell"). I'd study everything I could about fiction writing (starting with Coyne's "The Story Grid") and I would avoid "buying" houses with mortgages. Debt makes you a slave - literally, not figuratively. I would live as a minimalist the way my father did, so the fear of having no money wouldn't be as big a deal, maybe. I'd raise my family in a small town where people smile at each other as a normal baseline response.

I would hang on to my childhood and high school friends for dear life. Once they're gone, you've lost one of the keys to happiness. And I'd hang on to my belief in God, being cautious of fundamentalism, both religious and scientific, because fundamentalism seems to sometimes box up people's thinking, creating blind spots to new ideas, newly discovered scientific realities and the overall spiritual growth that humanity must achieve in order to survive our technology.

And I would always love and take care of a dog. Always.

How do you discover yourself, your passion, and your purpose in life?

Over the period of time people have constantly asked me this question “How can I find my passion in life” or something in lines of “How can rediscover” my passion and purpose in life.

If you want more detailed information - do check out my videos. However, for the purpose of Quora, here are a few strategies I would suggest.

Take a sheet of paper and pen
Sit down in a place where no one will disturb you
Then once you are comfortable in a quiet setting - write down the answer to this question - WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO EVEN IF NO ONE GAVE YOU ANY MONEY?
Find out what you like doing even if no one was watching or even if there was no one paying you money. Mine was talking and I have continued doing so even today.
Keep writing whatever it is - good, bad, ugly, fun stuff, useless or pointless stuff - whatever
Once you have written everything down - zero down on just your top 1, 2 or max 3 things.
Once you get your top 1 or 3 things - decide on a time every single day that you can commit to it and do it regularly for at least 6 months to a year.
While you are doing it for 6 months to a year - ensure that you commercialize it - do it for some amount of money - even $1 in exchange for something that you are doing which you love
If you feel bored or you lose interest within a year of doing so - then it is not your passion. Try the experiment all over again.
If however, after a year, you feel good about whatever it is you are doing - figure out ways and means to make MORE money out of your hobby or interest of choice and see how sustainable it is.
Finally, if you can make enough money out of this passion - then go for it full time. If however, you cannot make sustainable income then take it as a side business or something you do when you are free.
Also - to speed up the process - try getting yourself a mentor - this will really help you become better at what you do.
Try doing this and see how it works out.

Remember - once you make money doing what you love - you will automatically find your purpose and your passion in life.

How long did it take you to find your passion in life and how did you go about discovering it?

At 6 years old, I was accelerated up a class in English, due to my advanced reading and writing skills. I loved reading proper chapter books, and working with the older students.

At 8 years old, I discovered the Harry Potter books. Whenever the next in the series was released, I would wait in line to buy it, and read it all in one day. Actually, most weekends you would find me curled up reading a book. I read every night before bed. Our house was stuffed with shelves of books.

At 10 years old, I was writing poems and short stories. I’d give them to my mother as a birthday gift, and smile at her praise and tears.

At 12 years old, I was top of my English class, having maintained that status all the way through primary school. I beamed with pride.

At 15 years old, I was accelerated into an advanced English class, attending extra lessons with my favourite teacher, and taking national tests early. My teacher encouraged me to write more, introducing me to incredible authors and styles.

At 18 years old, I was stuck trying to choose a university degree. I thought about what I was good at. Writing, I supposed. I applied for a journalism degree and was accepted.

For the next four years I studied journalism and international relations. I loved researching and writing essays. I never had a problem with getting assessments in on time. In this learning environment, I was absolutely in my element.

Over these years, I also went through many relationships. I found that all the love and heartbreak inspired something creative in me. I have notebooks full of poems and scribbles, that only seemed to burst out of me when I was passionate or grieving.

At 23 years old, I graduated valedictorian from my degree. I have no doubt it was my writing skills that won me all those high grades.

At this point, if you asked me what I wanted to do with my life, I’d tell you “I don’t know.”

I was working a full-time job, and I was bored.

One night, I was having a deep conversation with a friend. We were discussing what we loved to do as children, as this is often a key lead in discovering your passions.

I realised that, as a child, I either had my nose in a book, or a pen in my hand. I had loved writing. I was good at it, too. I don’t know why I stopped.

So, my friend pushed me to start writing again. He’d check in with me every day. “Have you written today?”

I bought a plain notebook and started scribbling stories and musings. I’d excitedly report back to my friend with my progress. He told me he loved the way my eyes lit up when I babbled on about it.

Then, I discovered Quora. And I really started using my creative mind. Every time I wrote, depicting emotions and events, I felt a sense of elation. I adored it. I wondered why I hadn't kept up this habit all my life.

It now seems obvious, to me, where my passions and skills lie. I subconsciously knew it from 6 years old. But it’s taken me 24 years to have the belief in myself to actually pursue it. I have my wonderful friend to thank, for giving me the push I needed.

Now, when people ask me that once dreaded question, “What do you want to do with your life?”, I don’t feel like rolling my eyes and slinking away.

The question animates me. I have endless things to tell you. But the first thing I’ll say is:

“I want to write.”

What is the best "meaning of life" answer that you have ever given or heard?

It goes on.

These three words describe the meaning of life for me. I've spent the last few months contemplating about what the human life is all about. I've read religious books, talked to atheists about their thoughts on this topic - but all of it just confused me more. And while I was trying to find answers I didn't realize that important moments were passing by. I became so engrossed in trying to 'figure' out life that I forgot to live. I avoided calling my parents, since calling them only meant talking about mundane things (what did you eat? is your job going okay? etc.). These talks weren't good enough for me, they weren't answering any of my questions. There came a point where I was so disheartened about not finding any answers that I went into depression, not knowing what this life was ultimately leading towards.

During this time one of my friends explained a very good theory to me which helped me gain a little perspective - she said that we have been accustomed to getting a result at the end of every task (we study hard for an exam, we get good grades; we exercise, we become healthy; we do good at work, we get promoted - we have an end goal to look forward to). This notion of knowing that a particular task is leading towards an end goal makes us think that this life is leading somewhere (at least that was my dilemma) and I desperately wanted to know what that end result of living this life would be. I still dont know the answer to that question but I've realized that even if you stop living, life doesn't wait for you. It doesn't come to a halt and wait for you to get back up on your feet - It goes on.

This realization hit me hard and I'm still trying to digest the fact that Life will not be soft on me, it will not sympathize with me for not being able to cope up. It will just keep passing by and it's up to me to decide if I want to get on the train and enjoy the ride or just sit on the platform and watch, as the train passes by.

We're offering more perspectives on life for different people because everyone's journey is different and by trying to know about how different people deal with it, it might be useful for you as well to know how you might apply different aspects of people's lives and use it into your own as well.

What is life all about? Can you define it in a word or two?

Being in the happy zone.

Let me elaborate.

Let me start with a simple premise that you must accept. That is, happiness is a choice. It is your choice to live a happy life.

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass,

it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

-Vivian Greene

There was a time when I thought happiness was a destination, in much the same way I imagined I’d eventually arrive at peace or success.

It seemed like something I needed to chase or find—definitely not something I could experience without dramatically changing my life.

I’ve since learned through experience that helps to get through the day is always available, and like any desirable state of mind, it requires effort, even if that effort entails consciously choosing to be still.

Here is a checklist on simple attitude reminders to improve your happiness each day. It certainly has been a big help to me:

Start well

Start your day believing that you are going to have a great day.

Sharing

Sharing is always caring. You can’t do enough sharing.

Show kindness

Show some kindness without expecting anything in return. If they ask what they can do for you, tell them to pay it forward.

Smiles

Smiles matter. And they are so simple to execute.

Strangers

There are many strangers just waiting to make new friends. How many friends can you make today?

You

You are the master of your destiny. Take charge and show your happiness.

Create some alone time

Sit in nature—under a tree, on a mountain—and let yourself simply be quiet.

Remarkable

Be nothing less than remarkable. It just takes a little more effort.

Share some fun with someone you love

Forget about everything that feels like a problem and do something that seems like fun. Have fun spontaneously.

Play

Play is always the centerpiece of work. Be happy and enjoy things you do.

More thoughts: More Ways to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Defeat doubts

Eliminate fears or doubts. Mistakes and failures are ok.

Actively enjoy good things now

Be about the present instead of scheming to create a better future.

Volunteer your time

Volunteer your time to help a charity you believe in. Put all your energy into helping others, and you will find happiness without looking.

Serve someone else

Just because … just for them. That might mean helping them pursue their passion, or motivating them to reach their fitness goals. Whatever gives your life meaning, give it to someone freely.

Show gratitude

Gratitude is the attitude directed towards appreciating anything and anyone. Think of it as the ability to assign a value to something that others overlook. It is the secret to true richness. It never runs out. And best: it is not a scarce resource, unlike any other resource in the world.

Live with humility

Humility is the attitude of not taking yourself too seriously. Never forget where you came from. Never forget what you are: just human. No matter how high you fly or how low you fall, it all just seems so much easier if you tread lightly. Remember not to take yourself and those many projects of yours too importantly to the point of agonizing about them. It is fine to strive and seek.

What is this world and life all about?

This world and this life is all about YOU.

Now, this may seem very shocking but this is the reality.

Just look back and see, whatever that was done to you or was done by you, who was the beneficiary?

You Yourself.

This world and this life will become exactly the way you perceive it to be.

First of all, we need to understand that this life and this world revolves around us every second of our lives but we are unaware of it.

Our perceptions, our beliefs, our karma, our time, our people make it a heaven or a place little lesser than heaven. There is no hell as this attitude will always keep hope alive.

This very understanding that you are totally responsible for whatever good or bad has happened to you or is happening with you or will happen to you makes you powerful, unshakable from within. You will never get into blame games.

The world around is not good and is neither bad but is a mirror to the bundle of emotions, beliefs, thoughts and ideas that your mind holds.

We have heard that what we give, comes back as Karma is a bitch (This sentence is very famous on quora) but to really understand and believe this concept, we need to have a vision that can see things beyond time which very few people on the planet have.

There can be pages written to answer this question of yours but this little understanding that this world and this life has come into existence with my own mind and the real substratum is within me and not in the outside world simply summarises the whole idea beautifully and crisply without too much beating around the bush.
