Dowry has always been part of Indian culture. But earlier, it was given to the daughters as part of their right to their parents wealth to make them financially independent.

It was considered women wealth to which no one else had a right.

But, with the evolving culture, dowry became more of a demand and compensation to the groom’s family for taking good care of their daughter and her lifetime needs.

The problem with this new system was it never considered the time, effort, and energy a woman puts in to fulfill all the things expected of her.

Marriages today are considered more of a celebration to show the family status and financial power than a new beginning of new life.

From dowry to gifts and destination weddings to jewellery, expenses are just overburdening for the brides family.

So, whats the solution?

Making your daughter financially independent is definitely the first step, and considering marriage as a new beginning instead of a social status is the second most important step.

No matter how many laws are made,
No matter how much we fight,
The only thing that matters is the mindset.

Women who speak for their rights and consider themselves as a member and not a "bojh" (burden) on a family is often seen as a misfit in society.

The one who is prude and unthankful for what all her parents have done for her. However, all the wealth is happily passed on to a son, considering ye toh uska adhikar hai (it's his right)

No one questioning it makes it worst.

It's time we stop passing on wealth based on gender and truly start admiring the fact that a women's independence is not in the hands of her husband.

Only if this wasn’t the fact.

Even after prenatal s*x determination being banned in India since 1994, it is still practiced in secretly across nation.

The movie Jayeshbhai Jordaar was recently released and not loved by a lot of Indians, depicting the cruelty of how in-rooted the importance of a male child is 👦, this movie showed the side of society we have been avoiding for a very long time.

According to a study in 2011, around 🔪 1.5 lac unborn girls are killed annually in UP alone 🔪. That’s long after the law was ruled.

It doesn’t stop here the rate of conviction of the culprits is very low – with only 206 doctors being convicted from 2003-2014; Maharashtra leads the way, followed by Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.

Where families consider themselves as broad-minded words like “Putra bhava” (be blessed with a son), “Ghar ka chirag” (the light of the house), and “Kuldeepak” (the one who takes the family’s name forward), proves the Indian obsession for male children is never-ending.

Even when the discrimination isn’t done before birth the history of discrimination against the girl child and women in general still carries on.
