We know Whitman is not the most accessible, but this is just to give you some context for the quote, in case you needed inspiration. Don’t worry too much about it! It’s trite but it’s true: there are no right answers. We can’t wait to see what you come up with in response to these iconic words. Just give us your own interpretation, whatever the quote says to you, and then create something related to the meaning you found. And if you feel your work warrants a little more explanation in how it relates to the quote, feel free to send a short explanation along with it!

Time for another book review! Check out our new blog post: “The untaming of oneself: 𝘏 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘏𝘢𝘸𝘬 Book Review”!

This Sunday, we’re reviewing Helen Macdonald’s 𝘏 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘏𝘢𝘸𝘬, a memoir about one daughter’s process of mourning the loss of her photojournalist father and the untaming of a college professor. Bird versus man, wild versus domesticated, solitary versus community… The book explores what it means to be human from nature’s point of view, reconciling the apparent contradiction of the human self, a self that chases freedom yet at the same time is content with shackles.

We are open for submissions for our Autumn ‘20 Issue!

Blow Water Journal is calling for submissions for our independent, bilingual Hong Kong youth literary and art magazine. If you have any Creative Writing, Poetry, Art & Photography, or Essay to share, please submit! The deadline is on September 6, 2020.

“I contradict myself… I contain multitudes.” is a quote from Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself, 51”. For our second issue, we ask that you submit pieces connected to your interpretation of these famous words. There are many themes to be taken from them, and we look forward to seeing what you come up with!
