How slow is your writing today? Mine = slow as usual ☺️ Louise De Salvo has researched the writing processes of successful writers. Her book is a refreshing antidote to the mediocre 24/7 productivity.
What you see on the right is an unpublished manuscript by Hazel Hawthorne: So to a Rock and a Pine Tree that I’m currently reading, typing and thinking of how to incorporate into my manuscript. It’s about paths and roads, old and new, I think.
Typed, tattered, held together by rusty binder pins, pages rich with Hazel’s editing. The struggle of literally finding one’s path in 50 plus pages.

Friends, storytellers, those intrigued by stories, it has been a while. How are you?

I hope Hazel’s story still intrigues you and resonates with your souls as it does with mine. Thank you to everyone who has listened to the podcast and taken the time to reach out. I hope you enjoyed listening!

The project is alive and well even if you haven’t seen any updates here. After publishing all of the podcast episodes last year and the pandemic arriving to our lives, I needed a little time to ensure Hazel’s story gets the attention and level of energy our heroine deserves.

So I took time, an undefined creative break, to rejuvenate my mind and let go of the pressure of expectations, and here we are, a year later, meandering back together on this creative journey. Hi! I’m glad you are still here 🙏🏻

My journey with Hazel started in 2014, when I put my everyday life on hold. My gap year travels took me to the capital of modern bohemia in Europe: Berlin. That's where I first saw Hazel's portrait and got interested in her story.

Hazel Hawthorne published two novels, several short stories, poems and book reviews. Edmund Wilson has called her one of the most gifted of American women writers. And yet, most of us have never read her books or even heard her name.

She is a footnote in the biographies of literary giants such as Eugene O’Neill, John Cheever, and Edmund Wilson. She knew people, and people knew her.

I want to bring her to the center of the historical narrative.

She spent a large part of her life in the sand dunes of Provincetown, Cape Cod. She owned two dune shacks, which she named Euphoria and Thalassa. She was a free soul, not afraid to challenge the conventions and moral boundaries of her time. She has been called Queen of the Dunes.

Finding Hazel Hawthorne

Hazel Hawthorne(1901-2000) published two novels, several short stories, poems and book reviews. Edmund Wilson has called her one of the most gifted of American women writers, but she remains a footnote in the biographies of literary giants such as Eugene O'Neill, John Cheever and Edmund Wilson. She knew everyone who was anyone, but most of us have never even heard her name.

This narrative podcast takes you to the shores of the Atlantic on Cape Cod, where Hazel followed the footsteps of Henry David Thoreau and carved her own path to the literary world. The journey begins when Inka Leisma sees a black and white photograph of Hazel in Berlin, Germany.
