People often ask me how to determine if a church or religious group is toxic. Here are 25 Characteristics that come to mind:

1. Claiming a close relationship with God while not actively doing your personal work to address your brokenness that is harmful to yourself and others

2. Arguing theology to bolster one's ego and being "right" about God

3. Disparaging people of different beliefs as a sign of devotion to yours

4. Casting judgment upon others while giving yourself a pass

5. Dividing the world up into “us” and “them”

6. Using fear and shame to coerce obedience and devotion

7. Teaching people they are inherently bad, powerless, and lack the necessary skills, tools and competencies to be whole and free

8. Repressing individuality and demanding conformity

9. Demonizing those who question beliefs and teachings, voice dissent, and demand integrity

10. Perpetuating a spiritual superiority class structure of “clergy” and “laity”

11. Teaching a performance-based system of earning and maintaining God’s love and approval

12. Assigning maleness to God and esteeming men over women

13. Allowing differences of beliefs to prevent working alongside others to alleviate suffering in our world

14. Praying for divine intervention without taking direct action

15. Claiming to be a devoted Christian while perpetuating discord and hostility in human relationships

16. Denying other fields of knowledge such as science and psychology as necessary means of personal growth and development

17. Dividing up the world into "sacred" and "secular"

18. Characterizing professional therapy, mental health services and medication as a lack of faith

19. Claiming that there is only one legitimate way of understanding the Bible, God and spiritual truth

20. Glorifying violence and bloodshed as a salvific remedy.

21. Fostering spiritual codependency as a foundation for codependency in human relationships.

22. Teaching that toxic and abusive behavior in relationships is resolved by a woman being tolerant, forgiving, and trying harder to be a good “Proverbs 31” Christian woman.

23. Fear-mongering people from exploring life’s biggest questions outside the framework of traditional religion and theology.

24. High control, micro-managing accountability, and expectation of excessive organizational commitment.

25. Toxic religious leaders are viewed as divinely authoritative, beyond reproach, and deserving of homage and obedience.

An eye for an eye is not a healthy way to treat toxic relationships. Leaving them alone, and out of sight is the best way to focus on yourself and abstain yourself from the toxic environment.

Absolutely beautiful. Loving others isn’t something that is only possible with conditions. Love others always.

Those who love you are not fooled by mistakes you have made or dark images you hold about yourself. They remember your beauty when you feel ugly; your wholeness when you are broken; your innocence when you feel guilty; and your purpose when you are confused. ~Alan Cohen
