2022 Fishing Season Recap
It’s been a while since I posted here, so I thought I would do a 2022 season recap with the promise that I will be more active going forward. The last time I posted was in early May, so I will start there.
The May 2-4 long weekend is the season opener for both walleye and pike in the Muskoka area where I am fortunate enough to have a family cottage. I found the walleye spread out on a large sand flat that slowly drops from nothing into deep water. I decided to try trolling with a bottom-bouncer and worm harness setup, and that turned out to be a good decision! I caught my new personal best walleye within two minutes of starting to troll. This fish measured 30” in length with a 16” girth. I used that pattern for the rest of the weekend, and the three or four weekends after that and put many walleye in the boat, with a bunch of them over 5lbs.
Next up was a great trip to the French River with the boys in late June. Again, we caught lots of fish and enjoyed the camaraderie with good friends. On the third day, the owner of the lodge tipped us off that they seemed to be on a hot top water bite with pike and bass, and me and my neighbor Brent found a back bay and had an absolute blast hammering big pike, many feisty, chunky smallmouth, and an incidental musky that inhaled a 3” bass popper and proceeded to put my bass gear to the test.
All summer, I caught lots of bass, but my most memorable fishing trips were with the lake trout whisperer, Jason Gray. Jay and I absolutely slammed the lake trout every time we got out together, boating 10+ fish on each outing, including some real giants. Thanks Jay! Looking forward to doing it again this year.
Mid-September brought another boy’s weekend up at the cottage, and along with a lot of hilarity, we managed to catch some fish too. Keeper-sized walleye were landed by all four of us, and I managed a really nice pike on a 4” Keitech Swing Impact swimbait.
Fall musky fishing trips didn’t yield much. I had one good hit on Glouchester Pool in late November, but that was it!
