Israeli forces have killed eight Palestinians, including a child, in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, taking the total number of Palestinians killed in the West Bank to 239 since October 7.

Israeli forces shot dead five Palestinians in the city of Jenin late on Saturday and early Sunday, and killed three others elsewhere in the West Bank, the ministry said on Sunday. Six other Palestinians were injured in the Israeli raid in Jenin.

24/11/2023

The UK’s terrorism legislation watchdog has told the government that there is no need for new terrorism laws despite calls by ministers for a crackdown on pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

In a report to the Home Office published on Thursday, Jonathan Hall KC, the independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, said there was “good reason for caution” over extending the scope of terrorism laws.

Hall said existing laws were sufficient to ensure that any “terrorist mischief” around protests could be addressed by arrest and prosecution, and noted that the “edges” of these were currently being tested by cases before the courts.

He warned of the dangers of unintended consequences if new crimes were created, and said that a general solution of banning all references to terrorists or terrorist acts at public marches should be “rejected at the outset”.

“Especially on political matters or questions of public interest, members of the public should not be daunted from exercising their freedom of expression and right of lawful assembly based on laws which are vague or which they cannot be expected to understand,” Hall said.

The Pakistani currency continues to shatter all records as it dropped to a new low of Rs238 against US dollar during intraday trading in the interbank market on Wednesday.

The greenback gained 5.56 against rupee to reach the all-time high level as it closed at Rs232.94 on Tuesday in the interbank market.
The local currency is losing the ground due to deepening political crisis in the country, depleting foreign exchange reserves and delay in issuance of loan payment by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Meanwhile, Federal Finance Minister Miftah Ismail hoped that Pakistan will get funds from IMF in coming weeks, adding that the inflow of dollars will decrease pressure on rupee and strengthen forex reserves.

He said that fears of default are blown up, adding that a police will be chalked out to increase country’s exports in next three months.

Ismail revealed that friendly states were approached to get support to improve forex reserves but they rejected the request by saying that Pakistan never paid off the loan in the past.

27/07/2022

Pakistan has categorically rejected baseless and misguided remarks made by the Official Spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in an effort to politicize the China- Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

In a statement, Foreign Office Spokesperson Asim Iftikhar said the CPEC is a transformational project and a harbinger of stability, mutual cooperation and shared development for the region. As a flagship of the Belt and Road Initiative and hallmark of the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership, CPEC provides a vehicle for the people of the region to break from zero-sum approaches.
He said China’s investment in CPEC has helped Pakistan overcome the energy and infrastructural bottlenecks that once constrained growth and development.

Asim Iftikhar said attempts to cast aspersions over CPEC show India’s insecurity as well as the pursuit of a hegemonic agenda that has held back socio-economic development in South Asia for decades.

While rejecting India’s fallacious assertion that CPEC impinges on its “sovereignty and territorial integrity”, it is pointed out that it is in fact India that is illegally occupying the state of Jammu & Kashmir for over seven decades while perpetrating gross and widespread human rights violations and effectuating blatant territorial and demographic changes in the occupied territory in complete contravention of international law and relevant UNSC resolutions.

The spokesperson said India’s attempts to mislead the international community about the status of Jammu and Kashmir and to hide its atrocities against the Kashmiri people will never succeed. He said India is cautioned to desist from falsehoods and baseless claims over a territory that it continues to illegally occupy through brute force.

Rescue teams have found bodies of two foreign mountaineers, days after they went missing at the world’s second highest peak, K2, in northern Pakistan.

The climbers have been identified as Australian national Matthew Eakin and Canada’s Richard Cartier, reports said that the bodies were discovered at a location between Camp 1 and Camp 2 of the savage mountain on Tuesday.
Eaking went missing when he was descending from Camp 3 to Base Camp on July 22 while Cartier lost contact on July 19 when he was present between these two points.

A ground search operation was conducted to trace the missing climbers, but they were not found. Another operation was launched on Tuesday with the help of drone cameras and their bodies were found near Camp 1.

Reports said that the mountaineers have fallen on rocks and lost their lives. Process has been initiated to repatriate their bodies to their home countries.

27/07/2022

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday warned of imposing governor's rule in Punjab after the Supreme Court declared Hamza Shahbaz’s election as chief minister illegal and instated Imran Khan-pick Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi to the top provincial office.

Addressing a press conference, the interior minister revealed a summary in this regard is being drafted. He added that if PTI-backed government banned his entry into Punjab, it will provide a strong reason to impose governor’s rule in the province.
He also shed light on the deteriorating economic situation in the country due to political instability. He said that the ongoing turmoil is a matter of concern as the US dollar continued to take giant leaps against the Pakistani currency.

He blamed the PTI’s constant protests for increasing economic woes of the South Asian country, adding that the Supreme Court’s verdict will further deepen the crisis.

He also revealed that PML-N’s supreme leader Nawaz Sharif will lead the election campaign once the general elections are called.

26/07/2022

Maryam Nawaz, daughter of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and vice-president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has reacted to the Supreme Court verdict in the Punjab chief minister election case.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday declared Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari's ruling against Chaudhry Parvez Elahi's victory in Punjab chief minister's election as null and void. The court threw Maryam's first cousin Hamza Shahbaz out of chief minister's office and declared Elahi new chief minister of the province.
Maryam took to Twitter to share her opinion on the apex court ruling, which has been hailed widely across Pakistan, especially by the PTI and PML-Q leaders and social media users.

The judgement of the Supreme Court revoking deputy speaker’s ruling is a ‘judicial coup’, Maryam wrote.
Her tweet came minutes after the apex court struck down Deputy Speaker Dost Mazari’s controversial ruling on Punjab chief minister’s election, and termed it ‘illegal’.

Last week, Dost Mazari rejected the votes of 10 PML-Q lawmakers in favour of Pervaiz Elahi during the election for coveted post citing a letter from PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain under Article 63-A of the Constitution.

25/07/2022

State Bank of Pakistan Acting Governor Dr Murtaza Syed addressed the financial situation and also responded to the concerns about the country’s dilapidating economy.

Speaking in a podcast conducted by the central bank, the newly appointed Governor dismissed the impression that the cash-strapped country was headed towards an economic catastrophe.
Murtaza said Pakistan is not vulnerable as being assumed amid soaring global inflation, adding that the South Asian country has the International Monetary Fund (IMF) cover.

SBP head compared Pakistan’s situation with countries like Ghana, Zambia, Tunisia, and Angola, saying they would suffer economically owing to their not being in a programme of the global lender.
He mentioned that developing countries with no cover from IMF will suffer in the coming months amid skyrocketing prices.

Commenting on IMF programme, he said it was on track as the staff-level agreement had been received. The IMF staff is satisfied with our measures to complete the review, he said.

In light of recent comparisons with bankrupt Sri Lanka, the SBP chief said Islamabad’s debt-to-GDP ratio was 70 percent, which is lesser than Sri Lanka, Ghana, and other nations.
Expressing hope for economic reversal, he said Pakistan’s growth rate is doing well, and we can afford to slow the economy and work is underway on it.

Earlier, he told a wire service that the country’s $33.5 billion external financing needs were fully met for financial year 2022/23, saying unwarranted market concerns about its financial position will dissipate in weeks.

Lankan batter Oshada Fernando and star hitter Dinesh Chandimal smash half-centuries to drive hosts to 315-6 on the opening day of the second test against Pakistan.

Chandimal, a hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batsman, returned on 80, after hitting his fourth half-century. He made a 75-run fourth-wicket stand with Angelo Mathews, who fell wanting fifty in his landmark hundredth.
Pakistani pacer Mohammad Nawaz got 2 scalps of Oshada Fernando, who made 50, and Chandimal.
The visitors were expected to be in a better position however fielding from Men in Green was not up to the mark. Skipper Babar Azam dropped two catches, including one from Niroshan Dickwella who was batting on a run-a-ball 42.

Later, Dhananjaya de Silva was bowled by Naseem Shah after scoring 33 runs in 61 balls.

Niroshan Dickwella 42 (43) and Dunith Wellalage 6 (9) are at the crease and will continue play on the second day.

Earlier, The Lions got off to a strong start with Oshawa (50) and Dimuth Karunaratne (40) combining in a 92-run opening stand.

Pakistan is taking the field without their premier fast bowler Shaheen Afridi after he was ruled out of the second Test because of a knee injury sustained on the fourth day of the first Test. With the Galle surface providing assistance to spin bowlers, Pakistan earlier included Nauman Ali in the XI and have decided to go with two fast bowlers.

Babar-led squad has a 1-0 lead in the two-tests series following their thrilling four-wicket victory in the series opener.

25/07/2022

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry has said the PML-N has begun to speak against the judiciary and it will begin speaking against the army too over the next few days.

Fawad's remarks came as war of words between the PML-N and the PTI has intensified once again after the disputed election for Punjab chief minister's office on Friday.
Fawad has said the PML-N feels it has made a big mistake by aligning itself with the establishment against Imran Khan and now the party's vice-president Maryam Nawaz will seek to push an anti-establishment narrative.

"The flaw in this scheme is that people are no longer those of the 1990s and the competition is with Imran Khan," Fawad said.

He said the PML-N's plan of action will see it "completely forced out" of the country's politics but "the institutions will suffer damage" in the process.

Fawad censured the PML-N for what he characterised as oscillating between two narratives depending on the situation.

"They were brought into being by the establishment and the brothers decided that one will do pro-establishment politics, whereas the other will sell an anti-establishment narrative. When one narrative failed, they sought to push the other. This formula is also being transferred to the next generation," he said.
Maryam Nawaz had said a day earlier the PML-N would not accept "one-sided" decisions of the Supreme Court after it ruled that Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz will work as a trustee CM till Monday (July 25).

The Supreme Court's decision came during a hearing on PML-Q leader Pervez Elahi's petition against Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Mazari's ruling in the Punjab CM’s election.

"Amid pressure due to bullying, threats, misbehaviour and abuse, if the house of justice makes specific decisions via the same bench — and negates itself, negates its own decisions, puts its weight behind one side — do not expect us to bow our heads before such one-sided decisions. Enough is enough!" tweeted the PML-N leader.

Sindh government has declared Monday a public holiday for provincial capital Karachi and Hyderabad divisions amid heavy rainfall southeastern region.

PPP leader and provincial government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab announced that Monday, July 25, will be a public holiday in Karachi and Hyderabad Divisions, after relentless rain continued on Sunday, which caused water logging and suspension of power in several areas.

Punjab will once again be the centre of attention today (Friday) as all eyes are set on the crucial session of the Punjab Assembly to hold the process of the chief minister's election between incumbent CM Hamza Shahbaz and Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervez Elahi.

The contest, which began after a delay of three hours, is expected to shape the country's future political scenario. The process of voting ended at about 8:50pm after which the counting of votes began.

The landslide victory of PTI in last week's Punjab by-polls turned the tables around in the Punjab Assembly. However, there still is widespread confusion over the numbers of the two major parties of Punjab — PTI and PML-N — who will have a thrilling contest for the Punjab CM between their respective candidates Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervez Elahi and Hamza Shahbaz, the son of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
As the speaker himself is a candidate for the contest, the session will be held under the chairpersonship of Deputy Speaker Dost Mazari, who has sought strict security arrangements for today's political activity.

14/04/2022

ISLAMABAD: The price of petrol is set to cross Rs200 per litre for the first time in history as the new government may pass on the burden of the PTI government’s wrong decisions to the public, Geo News reported, citing sources.

In the second fortnight of the current month starting April 16, the newly formed government would be required to either jack up the price of petroleum products or enhance subsidies to maintain the existing price.

On February 28, former prime minister Imran Khan announced a reduction of Rs10 per litre in petrol and diesel prices and a price freeze till the announcement of the budget for 2022-23.

According to sources, if the coalition government chooses to increase the price, the per-litre petrol cost will jump by Rs83.50 — if they decide to increase the levy and GST.

It is worth mentioning that the new government would be in a critical situation and might choose not to increase prices in a bid to win over public support. However, if the current government decides to keep the prices unchanged, then it will be forced to give another hefty amount in subsidy from April 16 to 30.

According to sources, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had submitted a proposal in this regard to the petroleum division, which includes working on petroleum levy and general sales tax (GST).
