Ahead of the 2025 Jubilee, the Vatican has launched a cartoon mascot as the cheerful face of the Catholic Churchโ€™s upcoming holy year.

Luce โ€” "light" in Italian โ€” is intended to engage a younger audience and guide visitors through the holy year.

Many years ago, Charles Borromeo helped the Church begin to live the Gospels again. He did this by living simply. Charles was born in a castle in Italy on October 2, 1538. His rich parents gave Charles a fine education. With it and with their money, he could have been or done anything. But he said goodbye to his familyโ€™s money. He knew at the age of 12 he wanted to become a priest.

His uncle was Pope Pius IV, and he named the young man a cardinal and Archbishop of Milan in 1560.

At that time, the Church had troubles. Many priests had forgotten that Jesus came to serve others. They refused to help the poor and hungry, the lonely and homeless. So Charles taught them how. He sent priests back to school by establishing seminaries. He was very concerned with religious education for children; he wrote a catechism for young people and built schools for them, too.

Then, when sickness came to Milan in the form of the bubonic plague, Charles rushed from house to house. He fed the hungry; he bathed the sores of the sick; he buried the dead. He put the good news of Godโ€™s love into action.

Some people tried to kill Charles because he did good things. Did that stop him? No! He just turned around and tried to help those people find God!

Finally, in 1584, Charles himself got sick and died. He was only 46 years old. He had spent his life showing people what Godโ€™s love looks like. So in 1610, the Church said, โ€œYes! Charles Borromeo is a saint! He lived the Gospels!โ€ He was canonized just 26 years after his death.

St. Martin was born in Lima, Peru in 1579. He was the son of the governor of Panama. His mother Anna Martin was a freed black slave. St. Martin is the patron saint of social justice and barbers.

When he was 15, he became a Dominican Friar. He worked as a barber, farm laborer, and in the infirmary. In the infirmary he cared for the sick. His medical knowledge regarding herbs was discovered and put to good use.

He begged from the rich to support the sick. His desire was to become a foreign missionary and earn martyrdom. Because this was not possible he offered his body to God. He received many spiritual gifts in return for his penances. Martin loved both humans and animals. He established an orphanage and childrenโ€™s hospital. He also established a shelter for cats and dogs. He was a friend to St. Rose of Lima. St. Martin de Porres is the first black saint from the Americas.

St. Martin de Porres had many spiritual gifts. He had healing power and a prophetic gift. He could see into the future and read hearts. St. Martin died Nov. 3, 1639. His body is incorrupt. Miracles were reported at his tomb.

St. Martin was canonized by Pope John XXIII in 1962.

Death can be scary, but with St. Joseph at your side, it doesnโ€™t have to be.

The mystery of death can create a great deal of anxiety, especially when someone is on their deathbed. We donโ€™t know what will happen to us when we die and we hope and pray that our soul will join God in eternal bliss.

One saint who can help ease our fears is St. Joseph, the patron of a happy death. While no one knows for certain when St. Joseph died, most biblical scholars believe Joseph died prior to Jesusโ€™ crucifixion. With this in mind, many traditions believe that Joseph died in the arms or presence of Jesus and Mary. Itโ€™s a beautiful image, one that has led the Church to proclaim Joseph the patron saint of a happy death. It would have certainly been the most peaceful death a person could experience!

Here is one prayer that recalls this image and can give us comfort while we await our own death. We never know when God will call us home, so in the meantime, let us do all we can to prepare for that day, making it a day of great joy.

Today, the Catholic Church celebrates one of the great solemnities of the year: the Solemnity of All Saints. This solemnity honors all the unknown saints who are now in Heaven.

Holiness is attainable, and it is for everyone. The call to be holy is bestowed upon us during our Baptism. And through the Communion of Saints, each member of the Mystical Body of Christ helps one another grow and strive for holiness.

No specific stories surrounding the apostle Simon appear in the Bible, nor are any quotes of his recorded. He is merely listed as an apostle, although in two different ways. Matthew and Mark call him the โ€œCananeanโ€ while Luke identifies Simon as a โ€œZealot.โ€ Although the two labels sound quite different, Cananean is plausibly derived from an Aramaic word for zealot. Simon was probably given this title for one of two reasons: either he was full of zeal in his faith, or he belonged to a political group from the time called Zealots.

The only information that can be gleaned from the Bible about Simon is his assumed participation in apostolic events. He was commissioned to go out to various towns to preach and heal, attended the Last Supper (but probably not the Crucifixion), saw the risen Jesus, observed Jesusโ€™ ascension into heaven, and received the Holy Spirit.

Beyond that, only tradition and legend suggest any more information about Simon. It is believed that after Pentecost, he traveled extensively to spread the message of Christ. Some wrote that he preached in Syria, Egypt, Britain, Mesopotamia, and Persiaโ€•places that do indeed have evidence of early Christian influence. While in Mesopotamia, Simon reportedly met up with Jude Thaddeus. The two apostles are alleged to have traveled to Persia (Iran) and there taught of the life of Jesus. Their words and actions were so convincing that thousands of Persians converted to Christianity. However, after some time, the two were martyred there: Simon was sawed into pieces, and Jude was clubbed (or hacked, or speared) to death. This double-martyrdom story prompted Church authorities to give the two apostles a feast day to shareโ€•Oct. 28.

Church historians record that the relics of both martyred apostles were eventually brought to Rome and are now preserved in St. Peterโ€™s Basilica

Let us pray!

O Glorious St. Simon, you were a cousin of Jesus and a devoted follower as well. You were called "the Zealot," indicating that you were willing to give your life for your religion and your freedom as a human person. Obtain for us the grace to be willing to give our lives for Christ and to labor for the freedom and peace that only God can give. Help us to spend ourselves for God on earth and be received by him in eternal bliss in heaven.

Jesus selected two apostles with the name of Judas. The English version of the name โ€• Jude โ€• is often used for the Judas who is also known as Thaddeus. This Jude is not mentioned much in the Bible and has only one quote attributed to him, found in John 14:22. This single line was spoken during the Last Supper, a Passover meal Jesus shared with his apostles shortly before his Passion. Evidently, Jude was curious as to why Jesus would not manifest himself to the entire world. Jesusโ€™ reply highlighted the importance of love for him and God the Father โ€” that the practice of this love and reverence would create a special dwelling.

Jude Thaddeus has become a very popular saint, probably due to his patronage of hopeless cases. This patronage may stem from an experience Jude allegedly had in the city of Edessa (a city now known as Sanilurfa in modern Turkey), according to the ancient Church historian Eusebius. Supposedly, while Jesus was still alive, the ruler Abgar V of Edessa was stricken with an incurable, painful disease. Abgar had heard of the miracles of Jesus and wrote him a letter requesting a visit. Jesus responded with a promise that, in time, he would send one of his disciples. After Jesusโ€™ ascension (most likely at some point following Pentecost), Jude went to evangelize in the region near Edessa and ultimately visited Abgar. While there, Jude laid his hands upon the anguished monarch, who was then instantaneously healed.

Jude is often linked with the apostle Simon. In the lists of apostles in the New Testament, their names are listed side by side. Some legends hold that the two spent some time preaching together in Persia and that they were both martyred there, Jude by bludgeon (or axe, or spear), and Simon by saw.

โ€”Matthew 25:36

On 28 October next, the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we will celebrate the 31st Prison Awareness Sunday. For this year we have for our theme, โ€œLord, that I may SEE, HEAR and ACT on the plea for help of Your people.โ€

Indeed the prison is a place to avoid, in view of committing crimes. We must never do anything that will make us end up in jail! But it also matters that we get to know, first-hand if possible, about the reality of our prisons and the cries of those inside them. Let us not forget them and their pleas for help because no matter what, these are human beings with inherent rights and privileges.

In the Gospel for this particular Sunday, Jesus heals the blind Bartimaeus and makes him see. Let us ask the Lord to do the same for our hearts, so that we may also โ€œSEE, HEAR, and ACTโ€ on the pleas of our sisters and brothers languishing in jails, deprived of liberty.

The longest reigning pope in modern history, John Paul II, took his message on the road, visiting 129 countries --several repeatedly -- on 104 trips and logging more than 700,000 miles in a papacy that lasted more than 27 years. Blessed John Paul died at the age of 84 at the Vatican April 2, 2005, the vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday.

As the first non-Italian pope in 455 years, John Paul became a spiritual protagonist in two global transitions: the fall of European communism, which began in his native Poland in 1989, and the passage to the third millennium of Christianity. The day of his canonization is Divine Mercy Sunday -- an observance Pope John Paul put on the church's universal calendar in 2000 on the Sunday after Easter. The Polish pope was a longtime enthusiast of the Divine Mercy devotions of St. Faustina Kowalksa, whom he beatified in 1993 and canonized in 2000.

Pope John Paul also instituted the annual February 2 World Day of Consecrated Life, the February 11 World Day of the Sick and a World Meeting of Families every three years. But welcoming hundreds of thousands of young people to the Vatican for a special Palm Sunday celebration in 1984, Pope John Paul launched what has become the biggest international gathering on the church's calendar: World Youth Day.

In his later years, the pope moved with difficulty, tired easily and was less expressive, all symptoms of the nervous system disorder of Parkinson's disease. Yet he pushed himself to the limits of his physical capabilities, convinced that such suffering was itself a form of spiritual leadership.

Let us pray!

St. John Paul, from the window of Heaven grant us your blessing! Bless the Church that you have loved, served and guided, pushing Her with courage towards the paths of the world to bring Christ to all, and all to Christ. From the window of Heaven, where we see you next to Mary, send down upon us all the blessing of God. Amen.

Luke was an Evangelist, the writer of the third Gospel. He never met Christ in person, but in his Gospel he says that he came to know about Jesus by talking to eyewitnesses to the events of Jesusโ€™ life, death, and Resurrection. Hearing those stories helped Luke to become a believer, and he wrote his Gospel so that others would come to know and love Jesus.

Luke was a doctor and he traveled with Saint Paul on his second missionary journey. In fact, Paul calls Luke his โ€œbeloved physicianโ€ (Colossians 4:14). Because he cared for the bodily needs of others, Luke is the patron saint of doctors. He is also the patron saint of artists because it is believed that he painted a famous portrait of Mary, our Blessed Mother.

In his Gospel, Luke helps us to know how concerned Jesus was for the sick, the poor, and anyone in need of help, mercy, and forgiveness. Luke tells us that Jesus came to save all people. Through Lukeโ€™s Gospel, we learn how compassionate and caring Jesus was. Some of the most famous stories Jesus told are found in Lukeโ€™s Gospel: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37) and the Lost Son (Luke 15:11-42).

The symbol for Lukeโ€™s Gospel is an ox, an animal that was often sacrificed as an offering to God in ancient times. In his writings about Jesus, Luke reminds us of the great sacrifice Jesus made to save all people through his death on the cross and his Resurrection.

Luke is also the author of the Acts of the Apostles. In Acts, we learn about the coming of the Holy Spirit; the work of the Apostles, especially Saint Paul; and how the Church grew in the world. He was the one person who was said to have remained with Saint Paul during his imprisonment and until his death.

We celebrate Saint Lukeโ€™s service to the Church each year on October 18. We remember that his Gospel continues to help us know and love Jesus. Lukeโ€™s Gospel also reminds us to look for ways to imitate Jesus by reaching out to help our brothers and sisters in need.

Do you ever wonder who was the first person to call the community Jesus established the โ€œCatholic Churchโ€? It was Saint Ignatius of Antioch. It was his way of explaining that the Church was open to anyone who wanted to be a follower of Jesus.

Tradition tells us that he was born around the year 50 and died sometime around the year 108. He was a disciple of Saint John the Evangelist, who was the Bishop of Antioch, in Syria. Ignatius succeeded him as bishop. Ignatius was like a shepherd, gently leading his people to understand the teachings of the Apostles and to put those beliefs into practice correctly.

In the year 107, the cruel Emperor Trajan demanded that Bishop Ignatius publicly speak out against our faith. Ignatius refused to deny his belief in Jesus Christ. Trajan sentenced him to die by being killed by lions in the Colosseum in Rome, far from Antioch. He wanted to make an example of this holy man.

Ten soldiers were assigned to guard him on the long trip. Bishop Ignatius used the time to write seven letters. The letters reminded the members of the Church to be faithful to the Lord and to follow the teachings of their bishop. They encourage the Christian community to serve the poor and needyโ€”their brothers and sisters. Ignatiusโ€™ letters have been preserved down through the ages.

As Ignatius and his guards journeyed to Rome, they were met at different places by the local bishop and many members of the Christian community who came to honor him. It is said that he blessed everyone and told them he would pray for them.

Ignatius was not afraid to die.

โ€œI am writing to all the churches to let it be known that I will gladly die for God if only you do not stand in my way. I plead with you: show me no untimely kindness. show me no untimely kindness. Let me be food for the wild beasts, for they are my way to God.โ€

Let us pray!

St. Ignatius, thou art one of the Fathers of the Church; pray for Her now as She gears up for Her final battle. St. Ignatius, thou wert a kind and tender pastor; pray for all our parish priests, that they may draw people ever more closer to Christ by exemplifying His mercy and goodness. St. Ignatius, thou wert not afraid to die as a martyr for our Lord; pray for all those who are dying this day. Amen.

Teresa was born in 1515 in รvila. She proved at an early age that she was an intelligent and thoughtful person. Teresa and her brother, Rodrigo, didnโ€™t play the same games that the other children played. Instead, they preferred to go to the garden and read. They were most interested in reading the Bible and the stories of the lives of the saints.

They were most fascinated by the stories of the saints. The idea of sainthood fascinated them. To them it seemed that the saints would be in the presence of God forever. In their childlike way, they would run around the garden chanting, โ€œforever, forever, forever.โ€

When she was 16, Teresa was sent to a convent to live, and at 21 she decided to become a nun. She enjoyed her life there and began to realize that she had been given a special gift. She was able to see heavenly visions. She chronicled these visions in her writing. One such vision came in the form of an angel who appeared to Teresa bearing a long golden spear. The angel was smiling and gentle so he did not frighten Teresa. The angel thrust the spear into Teresaโ€™s heart. Instead of feeling pain, Teresa felt safe and at peace. The spear was not really a spear, but the love of God. When the vision passed, Teresa felt very close to God.

Teresa did many great things. She knew how to pray and many people wanted to learn from her. She wrote books to help them, which people still read today. She founded a convent, St. Josephโ€™s, whose focus was a simple life of prayer. Other religious orders opposed her and made her life hard, but eventually her ideas spread through Spain and into other parts of Europe. She was the foundress of the order know as the Discalced Carmelites.

She died in 1582 at the age of 67 and was made a saint in 1622. In 1970, she was named a Doctor of the Church for her writing and teaching on prayer. This was a great honor, especially for a woman of her time. Saint Teresa of รvila, who is also known as Saint Teresa of Jesus, is the patron saint of persons who suffer from headaches.

Let us pray!

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices.

The first Marian apparition in history appeared to Saint James the Apostle, the brother of Saint John the Evangelist, on the bank of the river Ebro in Saragossa, Spain. Unlike every other recorded apparition, this one took place during the earthly life of the Mother of God.

According to tradition, she had promised Saint James that when he needed it most in his difficult mission to the pagans in today's Spain, she would appear to him to encourage him.

In the year 40 A.D., while praying one night on the tobrt bank, the Virgin appeared with the Child Jesus standing on a pillar and asked Saint James and his eight disciples to build a church on the site, promising that โ€œit will stand from that moment until the end of time in order that God may work miracles and wonders through my intercession for all those who place themselves under my patronage.โ€

The church of Our Lady of the Pilar in Zaragoza, is the first church dedicated to Mary in history and it remains standing to this day, having survived invasions and wars โ€“ in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 three bombs were dropped on the church and none of them exploded.

Our Lady is also said to have given the small wooden statue of the apparition to Saint James which now stands on a pillar in the church.

Nuestra Seรฑora del Pilar is the patron of Spain and all Hispanic peoples. October 12, 1492, the feast of the Virgin of the Pillar, is the day Christopher Colombus first sighted American land, and when the first Mass in the Americas was celebrated.

Born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli at Sotto il Monte, Italy on 25 November 1881, Pope John XXIII was elected Pope on October 28, 1958. He died June 3, 1963 in Rome and was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 3, 2000.

Angelo was the fourth child of 14, born to pious parents. His religious education was entrusted to his godfather, who instilled in him a deep love and admiration of the mystery of God.

He entered the minor seminary in 1892 at the age of 11, became a Secular Francsican in 1896 and in 1901 he entered the Pontifical Roman Seminary. On being ordained in 1904, he was appointed secretary to the bishop of Bergamo and taught in the seminary.

His great friends among the saints during this formative period were St. Charles Borromeo and St. Francis de Sales, two outstanding intellectuals and also formidable pastors.

He served as a military chaplain during the First World War, served as spiritual director of a seminary, and in 1921 served as the Italian president of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

In 1925 Pius XI made him a bishop and sent him to Bulgaria as the Apostolic Visitator. For his Episcopal motto he chose Oboedientia et Pax. In 1935 he was assigned to Turkey and Greece where he ministered to the Catholic population and engaged in dialogue with Orthodox Christianity and with Islam.

During the Second World War he used his diplomatic means to save as many Jews as he could by obtaining safe passage for them.

He was created cardinal and Patriarch of Venice in 1953 and was a much loved pastor, dedicating himself completely to the well being of his flock.

Elected Pope on the death of Pope Pius XII, he was an example of a โ€˜pastoralโ€™ Pope, a good shepherd who cared deeply for his sheep. He manifested this concern in his social enyclicals, especially Pacem in Terris, โ€œOn peace in the World.โ€

His greatest act as Pope however was undoubtedly the inspiration to convoke the Second Vatican Council, which he opened on October 11, 1962.

Pope Johnโ€™s spirit of humble simplicity, profound goodness, and deep life of prayer radiated in all that he did, and inspired people to affectionately call him โ€œGood Pope John.โ€

He was canonized by Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square on April 27, 2014, alongside the man who beatified him, Pope St. John Paul II.

Let us pray!

Jesus, In The Blessed Sacrament
Pope St John XXIII

O Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, I would like to be filled with love for You; keep me closely united with You, may my heart be near to Yours.
I want to be to You, like the Apostle John.

O Mary of the Rosary, keep me recollected when I say these prayers of yours; bind me forever, with your rosary, to Jesus of the Blessed Sacrament.

Blessed be Jesus, my love. Amen.
