New post added at Center for Innovative and Pragmatic Development Initiative - CIPDI'S POSITION ON GOOD GOVERNANCE AND ACCOUNTABILITYCIPDI'S POSITION ON GOOD GOVERNANCE AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Good governance, Democracy and Human Rights at all levels are fundamental to economic growth, political stability, human capital development, peace and security. A country cannot be truly democratic, until its citizens have the opportunity to choose their representatives, through free and fair elections. Critical development efforts cannot succeed, without a legitimate and democratically elected government, that is responsive and accountable to its citizens. Free and fair elections play a critical role in political transitions by advancing democratization and encouraging political liberalization. Elections provide important opportunity to advance democratization and encourage political liberalization as well as help build strong democratic principles. The democratic processes would not be complete without free and fair elections. For an election to be free and fair, certain civil liberties, such as the freedoms of speech, association and assembly, are required.
WHAT WE MUST DO

We must promote peaceful democratic political transformation, that will lead to increased stability, economic growth and prosperity. We must ensure that corruption is minimized, the views of minorities are taken into account and that the voices of the most vulnerable in society are heard in decision-making. And insist that Government is responsive to the present and future needs of society.
We must focus on building strong democratic institutions, and systems that promote equity, fairness and equal participation of all; in order to cut the great gulf between men in power viz a viz women and youths.
We must build an open, responsive, and accountable institutions and processes that serve the needs and preferences of the public.
We must ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate and have a voice and stake in who governs them and how they will be governed. We must encourage more women and youth’s participation in the political process, closing up the great gulf between the aforementioned group (women and youths) and the older men.
We must ensure and promote free, transparent and fair political competition, so that citizens’ preferences are represented.
We must defend and champion citizens’ rights of association and expression, so that they can play a role in their country’s future.
We must require and demand effective governance from our elected leaders, holding them accountable; while ensuring competitive multi party systems and sustainable community engagements and representations,

It is imperative that, we acknowledge and recognize that democracy and good governance, are critical components of sustainable development and lasting peace. Countries that have ineffective government institutions, rampant corruption and weak rule of law have a 30-to-45 percent higher risk of civil war and higher risk of extreme criminal violence than other developing countries. To help change this narrative, The Center for Innovative and Pragmatic Development Initiative CIPDI integrated programs to push and promote democracy, human rights and good governance throughout our core development work; focusing on strengthening and promoting equity, accountable and transparent governance; and launch an independent and politically active community advocacy. At the same time, we remain committed to fundamental democratic empowerment activities, including supporting free and fair elections, youths and women involvement and participation, up-to-date technology for new and traditional media, as well as the rule of law.

In conclusion, we must tackle poor governance, human rights abuse, inequality, corruption and abuse of power by elected officials. We must champion and promote rule of law, equity, equality, accountability transparency, freedom of speech and expression, freedom to participate in the political and electoral processes. We must work to develop effective legislation, and strong democratic systems and institutions as the foundation of a functioning and successful State.

We can no longer afford to take a back seat in the affairs of our nation. We must take a front row seat, and become participants in the day to day affair of our nation and polity. We must take steps to measure how Government and Public institutions, conduct Government and public affairs as well as manage public resources.

New post added at Center for Innovative and Pragmatic Development Initiative - ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMENENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMENGlobally, 1 in 3 women will experience gender-based violence in her lifetime. In the developing world, 1 in 7 girls is married before her 15th birthday. And between 1998 and 2008 alone, s*xual violence against men was noted in reports on 25 conflict-affected countries.

Gender-based violence threatens lives, halts progress, and undermines societies. It is a global phenomenon preventing people, especially women and girls, of their right to a life free from violence.

If women are not healthy and safe, they cannot care for themselves, support their families, or contribute to their communities. From kidnappings to shootings, from acid attacks to poisoning, and from discrimination to intimidation, women and girls around the world are being threatened, harassed, attacked and killed. It has to stop.
“Respond only, and you’ll be responding forever. Prevent only, and you ignore the survivor in front of you.”
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a human rights violation, a public health challenge, and a barrier to civic, social, political, and economic participation. It undermines not only the safety, dignity, overall health status, and human rights of the millions of individuals who experience it, but also the public health, economic stability, and security of nations.

Gender-based violence cuts across ethnicity, race, class, religion, education level, and international borders. An estimated one in three women worldwide has been beaten, coerced into s*x, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. Although statistics on the prevalence of violence vary, the scale is tremendous, the scope is vast, and the consequences for individuals, families, communities, and countries are devastating.

It is vital to promote the rights of all individuals and reduce gender-based violence while mitigating its harmful effects on individuals and communities. Unless women, girls, men, and boys fully enjoy their human rights and are free from violence, progress toward development will fall short.

We all must:

Increase awareness of the scope of the problem and its impact
Improve services for survivors of violence
Strengthen prevention efforts

New post added at CIPDI - INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY ADDRESSINTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY ADDRESSCIPDI, celebrates women all over the world today March 8, 2020(International Day of Women) a day set aside to honor women all over the world. Women are integral part of our communities, societies, and nations and we must do more in according them the honor and respect they deserve.

We acknowledge the vital roles women have played and continue to play in families, communities, education sector, economic growth and political landscape. It is not enough to set aside one day to honor women worldwide, we must do more than that.

We must protect them from s*xual predators, physical abusers, and those who silence their voices. We must encourage them to dream and pursue and achieve their purpose; equip them with the tools to innovate; empower them with resources and skills to lead, give them the platform to showcase their creativity and above all contribute to nation building by engaging in political discourse and Government.

We join other Civil Society Organizations in calling for gender equality, education of the girl child, socio economic and political empowerment. Many women in developing countries still face impoverishments and are disadvantaged in many aspects ranging from education, social acceptance and relevance, economic means and access to credit, to holding of political positions. Yes, we have made some improvements but the economic gap is still wide and we must work together to shrink that gap.

CIPDI has designed a program called “see one, lift one, teach one” We are launching this program this year in rural areas in Nigeria, to help encourage, train and empower women in the areas of entrepreneurship, community leadership and government, Technology and financial education. We, shall also provide them a platform to share their own stories and create their own content, addressing issues of concerns to them through our Media platforms in what we call community developmental journalism.

We strongly believe, that one way to combat hunger and world poverty is to empower women with tools, skills and resources and earning capabilities following the Proverbs 31 model. We cannot overemphasize the importance and contributions of women to family, community, society and national political, social, and economic development. And that is the reason we must close the earning and economic gap that exists between men and women; between the women who dwell in the rural areas and those in the urban areas.

Our mission in CIPDI is simply, SEE ONE, LIFT ONE, TEACH ONE, at the end they will be able to innovate, create and lead which is the ultimate vision and goal. We shall work with other Non-Governmental Organizations, civil society Organizations, Church bodies, schools and women organizations. And together we shall close the economic gap, increase the number of women holding political positions, improve and increase access to credit facilities for women in both rural and urban centers; eliminate trafficking and violence against women.

Thank you
