Podcast #380 is up, with composer Panic Girl (Martha Bahr)!

https://artmusictech.libsyn.com/podcast-380-panic-girl-martha-bahr

Hey friends – back with a great one! Panic Girl combines monster compositional chops with skillful modular (and more) manipulation, an obsession with effects and a willingness to try anything in search of the perfect sound. She is also one of those artists that makes instruments sound like ‘them’ – in her case, it is her ability to make the Cocoquantis sing that had me at the get-go.

I don’t need to say more: she’s a remarkable artist, and you need to hear this chat!

Greg’s background started in Boston-area bands, started working on games, and ended up being the product manager for Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Now he has a new project – ToneStone – that combines some of the game-like qualities of those earlier systems, but opens the door to music creation, not just karaoke. Very interesting stuff!

Jean-François has been super-influential to me, opening up the doors to some bizarre and wonderful Max patching ideas over the years, but also helping me understand spectral processing and live electroacoustic performance. His approach is personal, but grasp-able, and I am just in awe with the things he has been willing to share over the years. https://artmusictech.libsyn.com/podcast-376-peder-simonsen

Peder Simonsen has such an incredible practice – he is an accomplished producer, active performer/improviser and ensemble member. But his main groove is microtonalism – going so far as to dig deep into microtonal tuba (solo, as well as in the ensemble Microtub). In our discussion, we dig deep into microtonalism – how it is done, how you write for it, and how it works in group settings. We also dig deeply into his compositional techniques, and I learned a ton during our discussion.

You get composer Steuart Liebig’s enormous body of work, which spans collabs with people like Nels Cline and G.E. Stinson, to solo compositions, and his latest modular-based compositions.

Well. I wanted to speak with David Z for this 374th podcast, but he wasn’t up for an interview. Instead, he wanted to do a Q&A, where we would ask each other questions. It was a format I’d not done before, so I was up for the challenge. The results are both interesting and unexpected.

Our discussions range include childhood memories, vinyl collecting, ‘quality as a parameter’, self-motivation, and the social value of performance. And about a million other things, too. An amazing and wide-ranging discussion (although I hope you don’t think I talk too much on this one!!!).

Additionally, Elainie is a super-active teacher, both at Bowling Green State University and the SPLICE Institute. And, amazingly, all of her teaching load seems to push her forward, helping her to stay excited about both composing and the academy. A fantastic interview - enjoy!

Podcast #372 is up, featuring Synclavier developer Cameron Warner Jones!

https://artmusictech.libsyn.com/podcast-372-cameron-warner-jones

If you know electronic music, you’ve heard of (or at least heart) the Synclavier Digital Music System. This is the system that powered everything from Michael Jackson’s Thriller album through tons of TV and movie scores throughout the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. The system has gone through a couple of revisions over the years, and it was great to talk to one of its inventors about the history and the future of the Synclavier.

In our chat, we talk about both cultural and technical challenges in producing the Synclavier system, and talk about how it was developed from scratch (designing your own computer? operating system?), how the technology changed under it, and how Cameron has coped with maintaining it through the years. And, in the meantime, we learn a lot about one of the people that was key to its creation and maintenance.

Peter and David were involved in the sound design and re-recording work for a film (The Killing Of Two Lovers, by Robert Machoian) that has no musical soundtrack: it is all sound design, foley and dialogue. The result is a unique viewing experience, with a high-tension, high-attention background for an intense movie.

In our chat, we learn about their background, their work in collaboration (with others, and with each other) and how the sound work for this movie was imagined, how the signature sounds were created, and what’s important (or not) in this environment. https://artmusictech.libsyn.com/podcast-369-david-donaldson-and-steve-roche-plan-9

What do you get when you mix quirky composers, group improvisation, innovative sound design and a unique workspace? Well, you might end up with Plan 9 – a collective out of Wellington, New Zealand, that has a robust IMDB listing, a number of performance groups and a kind-of-insane sample library business.

In our discussion, we talk about how these folks got started, how they broke into the soundtrack/sound design business, how that led to making sample libraries, and what COVID has done to the lot of them. This is a great view into the lives of working musicians that aren’t caught up in a single self-definition, but work all the angles to keep things exciting.

With the recent announcement of the official Tiptop Buchla modules, along with the sneak peek at the revised Buchla Easel, I figured it was time to get in the car, drive up to Minneapolis, and have a chat with Buchla & Associates’ owner, Eric Fox.

In our discussion, we learn about his rural background, becoming a punk guitarist, entering music retailing – and eventually finding synthesizer sales as his muse. Next thing you know, he’s running Buchla and Associates, and is managing a mixture of the classic and the new (as the above reveals would imply). I was fascinated by his descriptions of work in The Reel World articles for Keyboard Magazine, and I sought out every soundtrack that he was involved in. I was also a huge fan of the Liquid Cinema (produced by M-Audio), and have recently been drawn into his solo music releases as well.

Since their development practice is based on collaborative looping and sound design, their sound is truly the combination of everyone’s efforts and input.

Check out yaeltex.com to learn more (and to see some wild examples), but listen in as we discuss the evolution of the company, their vision for the future, and how they see controllers fitting into the creative environment.
