Grade 12 Exam Result: Only 27,000 Students Hit 50% Mark
October 9, 2023
ADDIS ABABA – Only 27000 students have scored 50% and more as education authorities revealed grade 12 national exam results on Tuesday.
A total of 845,188 grade 12 students sat the 2022/23 Ethiopian School Leaving Certificate Examination (ESLCE) in two rounds two months ago.
Their overall performance, according to the results announced today, is slightly poorer as compared to the previous grade 12 batch which authorities described as “shocking” last year.
In a press briefing, Education Minister Birhanu Nega (Prof) reported that 27,267 students have scored 50% and above in the national exam.
The figure is 3.2 percent of the total students who sat for the ESLCE in two rounds in July-August.
The passing rate is 0.1 percent less than the 3.21% mark recorded in the preceding academic year, according to the Ministry of Education.
This shows, the minister said, that we have to double down our efforts to diagnose the problem affecting the education sector starting at the early stages.
The high schools have also shown mixed results in terms of their performance reflected in their student’s results. Nearly 3,110 high schools nationwide saw their final-year students take the ESLCE.
And no student from 1,328 schools has scored the 50% mark. This requires further investigation to identify the cause and take corrective measures, education authorities say.
The highest score this year is recorded by a female student from the natural science stream, scoring 646 out of 700. The top-scoring student from social sciences has found 533 questions right from the 600.
The exam results will be released online and by SMS starting on Tuesday morning.
