There must have been many productions organised or put on by the drama department, during the upper school's 60+ years of operation. In the 1960s 'The Mikado' and 'The King & I' were big events, played to large public audiences. We don't have much archival material relating to subsequent productions and if you have anything tucked away at home we'd love to have digital copies (or the real thing). Email to [email protected]

We've made a little compilation of what we have below.
The Boyfriend (1983) The Little Shop of Horrors (2003)
A 'Pirates' show (2009) Frankenstein Meets Rocky Horror (2012)
Starry Night (date unknown)
We also have and entry on two other productions - Zombie Theft
and The Zombie Within (both 2011) but nothing to go with them.

If you were at Kent St in 2003 you may have seen "Little Shop of Horrors", a production directed by Sally Floyd. In fact, you may well have been in it: there are a lot of names in the Cast & Crew.

THE FORTUNATE LIFE OF PETER STOKES

Born in 1929 Peter Stokes attended Kensington primary, then went on to Kent St Central School (later to become KSSHS) to complete two more years of education.
He took up essentially one vocation over his entire working life and that was to do with dental prosthetics. He began as a messenger boy at F.H. Faulding's dental dept., then went on to study under the instruction of a female technician for 10 years.

Peter met Jean, the love of his life, and they married in 1952, eventually having seven children. The couple physically built their own house in Bedford. When, in 1958 an opportunity arose for Peter to buy a dental laboratory in Perth he took it up, and even built another lab on his back veranda to enable him to work at night. Over the ensuing years the business prospered and he took on many apprentices. Peter became instrumental in the development and implementation of dental technology in W.A..

Despite his very busy life, Peter Stokes had many interests and hobbies - beekeeping, genealogy, and all aspects of photography, to name a few. And he played an active part in the Masonic Lodge, rising through the ranks to Grand Master; a role which involved a lot of intestate and overseas travel

His early connection to the Kent St has continued through financial support to the Kentian Society. Over several years Peter and Jean have donated well over $100K to various scholarships operated by the Kentian Scholarship Foundation.

Scholarships in Their Name

• Year 11 Jean & Peter Stokes English and Humanities Scholarship

• Year 11 Jean & Peter Stokes Creative Arts Scholarship

• Year 11 Jean & Peter Stokes Financial Assistance Scholarship (x 2). At least one of these to an Indigenous student.

Peter and Jean's generosity reaches far beyond this school: they financially support many associations including the RFDS, Cancer Council and the W.A. Symphony Orchestra.

Peter Stokes claimed to have had a fortunate life. W.A. is fortunate too, that he spent it here.

Peter passed away in January 2022

Fifty one years ago, Warren Grellier, a newly appointed English teacher arrived at the school. There were no drama classes then so he decided to put on a whole-school production - a major undertaking. The show was called 'Salad Days' and was a success at many levels.

Warren describes the story of producing 'Salad Days' here. He is hoping to organise a reunion of cast and crew members.

Some years ago (but we don't know exactly when), a concert called 'Starry Night' was performed by students from Years 8 -11. All we have in the archives are the 3 pages shown here and the script for the MC.

Can somebody tell us what year it was performed or any other information, please.

By the way, if you have any programs or brochures of school productions lying in a box somewhere, why not dig them out and email copies to us and we can then post them on this platform for others to enjoy.

From the many Items held in the Archives we regard one as a real treasure: now 84 years old it is the very first Inspector's journal with comments made by T. Edmondson on the day he opened the school - 14th Feb, 1940. Here are the first two pages.

The Remarkable Molly Dinham OAM (1923 - 2019)

Mrs Dinham was a teacher, deputy principal and acting principal over a span of 25 years, 1960 - 84. She described herself thus: Educator, Aviator, Historian, Author, Innovator, Traveller, Adventurer.

She arrived at Kent St in 1960 as a P/E instructor for the girls, where she soon brought in girls sports (netball was the only current one) such as hockey, basketball, cricket and gymnastics. She had a Swedish Beam built for her by Marsh Walker and Ken Armstrong. She also introduced a dance course with practice held at the Scouts hall across the road. Later she established a Drama and TV studies program and was instrumental in setting up the Aviation course. In fact she takes the largest portion of credit for the purchase of an aircraft for the course; (At the time she didn’t have a pilot’s licence but obtained one just before turning 60.)

During Mollie’s tenure the school expanded enormously and her skill at timetabling was sorely needed. The Ed Dept published a booklet, “Timetabling with Mollie Dinham - The Constructing of Timetabling in a W.A. School”.

After retirement she caught the travel bug, journeying solo or with adventure groups through 70 countries. She wrote and published three books; Travels to Exotic Places, Exotic Places Too and More Travels to Exotic Places.

Mollie lived to be 96. One of her staff evaluations read “Thank you for being a strong headmistress - I only have to ask one of those feisty Year 11 girls whether she would like me to mention her name to Mrs Dinham, and that is the end of the matter”.
