Beer & W**d Magazine Announces Ownership Transition
PORTLAND â Beer & W**d Magazine, Maineâs premier publication covering the craft cannabis and brewing communities, announced today a new ownership group, transitioning from the four partners who founded the publication in 2021. New owners Cody DeLong, Sylvia Cunha, and Scott Lee, who will operate the publication as BW Mag LLC, are excited to have closed the deal and look forward to taking the publication into the future, both in print and online, using their deep experience in community development and social curation.
âWeâre thrilled to have the opportunity to build on what Sam, Gregg, Glen, and Mark have created here,â said DeLong. âItâs an incredible foundation â no one whoâs picked up a copy can miss the quality and professionalism â and we have so many ideas for continuing to serve such a loyal readership base.â
DeLong, Cunha, and Lee have founded a number of companies in the online media space, working with everyone from metal bands to non-profit foundations, and have long-developed skill sets that will be very complementary to the print-publication expertise held by B&Wâs founders.
âItâs very comforting to be able to hand this publication â and brand â to people who understand its value and reputation,â said Sam Pfeifle, who served as editor for Beer & W**d, and who has served as managing editor of the now-defunct Portland Phoenix and a number of publications in the B2B space. âWe canât imagine a smoother hand-off or better group to realize the brandâs potential.â
After 30 issues, starting with February of 2021, the print version of the publication was put on hiatus in the fall of 2023, while the Beer & W**d LLC team of Pfeifle, Glen Halliday, Mark Sayer, and Gregg Shapiro monitored market conditions that featured plummeting cannabis prices and a series of brewery closures. However, the digital newsletter, podcast, and social properties have demonstrated non-stop growth and, as the markets solidify in 2024, the new ownership group is excited to get back in print and continue to participate in what has become a billion-dollar combined industry in Maine. Further, they see massive potential in growth outside the state.
âWeâre thankful to the Beer & W**d team for developing such a robust launching-off point,â said Cunha, âand we think people will be really happy with what comes next, including expanding to Massachusetts and beyond."
