1000 Years of Classical Music Classical music is a living tradition stretching across a millenium. 1000 Years of Classical Music is People have always made music together.

But 1000 years ago, a monk called Guido of Arezzo came up with an idea that would revolutionise the future of our culture: how to write down — and therefore share — music through a system of notation.

1000 Years of Classical Music is a new project celebrating and exploring what happened since Guido came up with his new idea. Over the past millenium, styles and forms have drifted in and out of fas

hion; how we perceive certain sounds — what is ‘happy’, and what is ‘sad’ — has changed as the centuries have come and gone. But one thing has remained a constant thread: the power of music to touch our lives. Music is a language that describes our experience in the world; it also shapes our reaction to that experience. Whilst born out of very particular cultures, music has an ability like nothing else to connect with us across time and space. It provides the soundtrack to our own lives; and it allows us to glimpse other lives far beyond our own.

1000 Years of Classical Music is a new initiative of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. As well as through this website, the project will celebrate music through a new series of albums and playlists, through videos and podcasts, and through radio broadcasts.
