🇺🇸Meet the Veterans and Supporters of the Elmhurst American Legion❤️🤍💙

The American Legion T.H.B. Post 187, founded in 1919 in Elmhurst by World War I veterans, honors three fallen local soldiers and actively supports veterans and the community through events like parades, ceremonies, and youth programs. Members share stories of military service and find camaraderie, emotional support, and purpose at the Legion. The post provides practical assistance to veterans—like rides to medical appointments and access to benefits—and organizes activities such as honor guards, blood drives, and care package initiatives. Welcome to the October edition of Elmhurst Living Magazine!

🩷Hair & Hope | Meet the Longardner Family

🎀October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we’re proud to share the story of Jenny and Kent Longardner. Jenny and Kent Longardner met at Michigan State University, married in 2009, and settled in Elmhurst with their two daughters. In 2017, Jenny was diagnosed with breast cancer, which led her to use cold caps during chemotherapy to prevent hair loss, a significant emotional challenge during treatment. Inspired by her experience, Jenny now helps lead Hair & Hope, a nonprofit that provides cold caps and emotional support to cancer patients. Read more about the Longardners in this month’s feature.

🚒Elmhurst Fire Department
October is Fire Prevention Month and the Elmhurst Fire Department at Station 2 is inviting the community to its open house which will cover the importance of smoke alarm functionality and also offer CPR training for teens later in the month. We also look back at the special dedication ceremony on September 11th at Fire Station 2 where local sculptor Jason Peot unveiled his “Vestige” sculpture to honor the brave men and women who risked their lives on that historic day.

The ‘Cue is one of the most important fundraisers of the year for Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network , which provides emergency assistance to Elmhurst neighbors in need. 💚

Your participation at ‘Cue directly supports EWAN. The purpose of EWAN is to provide financial support for people experiencing a difficult life event as they work to get back on their feet. EWAN delivered over 700 services in the first half of the year alone. 🙏

❤️ Meet the Toole Family ❤️
Matt and Karen Toole built a life together in Elmhurst, choosing this community for its charm and location, and to raise their two children, Regan and Paddy. In 2009, Matt was diagnosed with ALS, but he maintained a positive outlook, inspiring his family and the community.

The Elmhurst community provided immense support through fundraisers and events, helping the family navigate the challenges of ALS. Despite Matt’s passing, his legacy of resilience and gratitude lives on through his family’s achievements and their dedication to giving back to others.
