Camden Museum

Camden Railway Station c1962
The old Milk co can be seen to the left and McDonalds now sits roughly where the train curves in the middle of the picture. This is roughly around 33 Edward Street.
The Camden line extended from Campbelltown in the far south-west of Sydney to the nearby town of Camden. The line was built to move agricultural products from farms in the Camden area to town, however for much of its lifetime its most important traffic was coal from nearby fields. When an alternate loader was constructed at Glenlee, the line was closed.
A notable feature of the line was the very steep Kenny Hill (1 in 19 grade). Long trains often failed to make it to the top the first time, and had to either back up and try again, or divide the train.
Each Good Friday special trains would run to Maryfields, where people would attend the "Via Crucis" ceremony at the nearby Franciscan Brothers Monastery.
Apart from some of the formation near Maryfields and Kirkham, most evidence of this line has been buried underneath widened roads.

8501 UPDATE

Whilst at Werris Creek yesterday, we took the opportunity to assess the work required to make 8501 complete again. We now have a list of items required to be replaced, including a full set of number boards and E boards, which we will place an order for soon.

A general clean up of the cabs was also commenced.

The majority of you do the right thing, however we still saw more than 2,600 cases of trespass over the last 12 months

The railway is a dangerous place, trains are deceptively quiet and take a significant distance to come to a stop. Don't risk your life, or that of others 🚉

Update on 8649 at Werris Creek

8649 PROGRESS REPORT

Plenty of activity at Werris Creek today. The loco now has both horns in place after having lost one whilst in storage. Our new number boards have both been fitted, and look absolutely magnificent!

The side doors have been removed and are being repaired offsite, and the roof has been removed for installation of the ICE radio.

Our new floor rubber and adhesive has now been delivered and is ready to install.

Also, one suspect compressor has been removed and we will borrow one from 8501 to replace it whilst the old compressor waits it's turn for overhaul!

Not long to go now!

🚨 NEWS 🚨

Doctor Who has been renewed for another two seasons under the same cast and crew.

This means Chris Chibnall will be staying in the showrunner role for the upcoming season (season 13) followed by seasons 14 AND 15. Could this be hinting that Jodie Whittaker will also continue to play the Doctor until season 15?

2 Aug 1986, a two-car Comeng set T4 running a Clyde to Carlingford shuttle pictured at Camellia, NSW.

Earlier this year, on the 6 January 2020, in the early hours of the morning, the last ever train run from Carlingfrod. The Clyde to Carlingford railway was be closed and the northern part (from Camellia to Carlingford)is to be converted to light rail as part of the Parramatta light rail project.

The Carlingford line is a 7km long standard gauge electrified railway in Sydney's middle western suburbs that runs north from the junction with the main west line at Clyde, through Camellia to the terminus at Carlingford. The line opened in two stages, in 1885 from Clyde to Camellia, and in 1896 from Camellia to Carlingford.

The railway has now closed and the section from Camellia southwards via Rosehill Racecourse has been lifted. The northern 5km from Camellia to Carlingford will be converted to light rail and duplicated as part of the Parramatta Light rail project which is scheduled to open to passengers in 2023.

Australian Rail Maps

Today's historic photo of the day: Old timer 4402 heads two near-new 81 class diesels on an eastbound goods train on the goods lines just west of Campsie, NSW, exactly 34 years ago today, July 14 1986.

Campsie is in Sydney's inner south-western suburbs and is 12km from Sydney on Sydney Trains' T3 Bankstown line. At this spot there are four tracks, with the two southern tracks (at left in this photo) carrying suburban electric trains to Bankstown and on to Liverpool and Lidcombe, and the two nearer tracks being the goods lines to and from Enfield, Chullora and Lidcombe.

Whilst this particular train was diesel hauled, at that time there was still a significant amount of electric haulage of goods trains around Sydney.

The 81 class locos were only a few years old in 1986, but in contrast the oldest 44 class were 29 years old. 4402, the second in the fleet of 100 Alco World locos delivered to NSWGR was built in 1957 by AE Goodwin who were Alco's Australian licencee.

Whilst one or two 44 class diesels do actually still operate today, most were withdrawn long ago. 4402 was withdrawn and scrapped in 1989.

The goods lines, which in 1986 were electrified, still carry heavy traffic today, but nowadays these trains are always diesel hauled and these tracks have been de-wired. The upper quadrant semaphore signals are now gone - replaced by colour light signals. The passenger lines in the background still carry T3 line trains and are scheduled for conversion to a Metro line by 2024 as part of Metro Southwest.

8649 WORKS UPDATE

Work on the reactivation of 8649 has recently stepped up a notch at both Werris Creek and Lithgow. The overhauled alternator that had been previously transported from Sydney, was fitted a couple of weeks ago. Other things that are also now taking place, include fitting of ICE radio, removal of old floor rubber, replacement of old seats in both cabs with the newer variety, testing of all lighting, and replacement where necessary.

Meanwhile up in Lithgow, we have pantographs being overhauled, with new parts recently ordered from Melbourne. These will then be placed back on the loco when it is returned to the electrified area.

An order was also placed yesterday for 9 replacement batteries for the loco, with delivery expected tomorrow, ready for us to transport to Werris Creek.

We also arranged for a rubber flooring sample to be retrieved from the loco for matching, in preparation for an order to be placed for some brand new rubber flooring in coming days.
