Fashion week is here and we’re kickstarting our with a brief history of the Chatelaine: the ultimate fashion accessory!

🗝️Chatelaine translates from the French term meaning ‘lady or mistress of the castle’ who would have worn a belt at her waist to hold her keys. The word came to be associated with the decorative belt hook or clasp worn around the waist with various appendages.

👛Much like a personalised Swiss Army knife, the Chatelaine has catered to every need over the course of fashion history, from a seamstress’s essentials to a nurse’s tools, watches, wax seals - even chain mail purses!

🕰️In the 16th and 17th century, the Chatelaine became a statement fashion accessory that combined luxurious elegance and functionality.

⛓️Today, the Chatelaine has evolved in style and has graced various runways with a modern and industrial twist. You can see it here in Alexander McQueen’s F/W 19/29 show and Fendi F/W in the subsequent year.

With a remarkable expertise spanning 40 years, Martin from has carved a niche in the world of Meissen porcelain, Japanese art and fine collectibles. 🎏🌺

He has traded in a modest stall on Portobello road to Antiquarius on the famed Kings Road. In 1991 we welcomed him to our West End market, where he continues to attract enthusiastic collectors and perceptive dealers from around the globe. 🌎
