So, you want some suggestions on the best phones you can buy for under RM2,000? Well, both Raymond and Najib have recommended five of what they believe are smartphones worth the money without breaking the bank.

However, they stress that within these budget restrictions, there could be certain features that you might not get with cheaper smartphones. So, do read on and take note of the features that you might not be able to live without—and see if any of these fit your criteria.

Xiaomi 12 Lite

Raymond suggested the Xiaomi 12 Lite, which has been described to have a ‘featherweight’ design, as the device weighs in at just 173g and 7.29mm thin. It also has a 4,300mAh capacity battery which Xiaomi claims can last for a full day. Xiaomi’s AdaptiveCharge technology is able to learn your charging pattern to optimise its charging speeds, and it also comes with 67W fast charging that can power up your phone to 100% in just 41 minutes.

Under the hood, you’ll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G system-on-chip. It has a 6.55-inch, FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The 12 Lite has a triple camera setup on the rear with a main 108MP, f/1.88 camera using the Samsung HM2 sensor. The front of the device has a 32MP, f/2.45 selfie camera.

Honor 70

The Honor 70‘s main highlight is its main camera—with Sony’s new IMX800 1/1.49-inch image sensor with a resolution of 54MP attached to an f/1.9 lens. it also has a 32MP hole-punch selfie camera, sitting within the 6.67-inch OLED curved display. And it has improved its Multi-Video Recording feature, enabling you to shoot both a wide shot and a zoomed-in crop at the same time.

The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ processor, and it has a 4,800mAh battery with support for 66W of fast charging.

Poco F4

According to Najib, the Poco F4 is the best smartphone you can get around the budget—if you’re an avid gamer. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 system-on-chip mated to up to 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

It also runs at up to a 120Hz refresh rate, has a 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and has a 360Hz touch sampling rate. There’s support for Dolby Vision, TrueColor and HDR10+ too.

Additionally, the Poco F4 has a 4,500mAh battery with 67W fast charging. Poco claims that it will be able to fully charge your device in just 38 minutes.

Although the Poco F4 costs slightly more than RM2,000 (RM2,299, to be exact), Najib said that you can buy the phone during Shopee and Lazada sales. One of the sales he referred to dropped the price to RM1,849.

Samsung Galaxy A73

Najib recommended the Samsung Galaxy A73 due to its fairly large 6.7-inch, FHD+ Super AMOLED display with their Infinity-O punch hole cut out. The smartphone is also capable of up to a 120Hz refresh rate.

Under the hood, you’ll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G system-on-chip. And it gets a quad camera setup on the rear of the device, as well as a 32MP front-facing camera housed in the punch hole cut out on the display.

Similarly to the Poco F4, Najib recommended a smartphone that went a little bit over budget —as the usual price for the Samsung Galaxy A73 is RM2,099. But you’re able to buy them within your budget during a sale on shopping platforms.

OnePlus Nord 2T

If you’re looking for a smartphone with a strong processor, the Oneplus Nord 2T has a MediaTek Dimensity 1300 under the hood. It’s also mated to up to 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB UFS 3.1.

Otherside, its other features don’t stand out as much. It has a 6.43-inch, FHD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. And in the camera department, there’s a triple rear camera setup with a main 50MP, f/1.8 camera, an 8MP, f/2.2 ultrawide angle shooter, a 2MP, f/2.2 mono lens as well as a 32MP, f/2.4 selfie camera.

You can consider getting this phone if you want lots of space and if you want to use OxygenOS—which is apparently faster than other OSes.

After a long wait, the Celcom and Digi merger is finally completed, making them the single largest telco in Malaysia. If you’re wondering what it means for new and existing consumers, both Celcom and Digi have released an FAQ on the immediate impact of the merger.

Business as usual for both Celcom and Digi users

According to CelcomDigi, the merger is aimed at building a stronger company and it will combine the best of both networks, distribution channels, products, services and partners to deliver the best in connectivity, service, innovation and value. At the moment, Celcom and Digi customers won’t have to do anything and they can continue to enjoy their existing networks, stores, plans and services with no change to the current plan.

As this merger was just recently completed, the same Celcom and Digi brands will continue to exist but consumers will start seeing an additional new CelcomDigi logo together with these brands to signify that both are one company. Both telcos promise to continue delivering the same reliable services and experiences to customers as before.

For now, both Celcom and Digi retail stores will operate as usual to serve their respective customers. The same also applies to their existing network infrastructure. This means a Celcom customer will need to go to an authorised Celcom store for registration, purchase and assistance, and their SIMs can only connect to Celcom’s network. The same applies to Digi customers as they can only be served by Digi stores and connect to Digi’s network. For clarity, the newly merged telco will not be able to serve both Celcom and Digi customers in the same store.

For self-service, the existing self-care apps such as Celcom Life app and MyDigi will continue to function as usual. If you need additional assistance, you can reach out to the respective Celcom (1300111000) and Digi (016-2211800) carelines.

What to expect in the future?

Like most mergers, it will take time for CelcomDigi to streamline its operations as well as its assets and network resources. Besides reducing duplication of network infrastructure, the merged entity will hold significantly more spectrum combined than its closest rival, Maxis. This may result in a better user experience as the merged telco can efficiently share a larger pool of spectrum for mobile data usage.

To address competitive concerns, Celcom and Digi have agreed to MCMC’s undertakings which include letting go 70MHz of spectrum over a three-year period. Even after the spectrum divestment, CelcomDigi will still hold 150MHz worth of spectrum, versus 115MHz currently used by Maxis. The merged company also needs to establish a separate independent business to manage its Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO).

During the same period, Celcom and Digi will have to remove exclusive arrangements with distributors in Sabah, Labuan, Sarawak, Terengganu, Pahang and Kelantan. Meanwhile, Celcom would also need to sell off Yoodo within 18 months or they would need to cease Yoodo operations within 3 months of the expiry of the divestiture period.

CelcomDigi has yet to reveal its branding plan for its future products. It could be possible for Celcom, Xpax and Digi brands to co-exist under a single umbrella or perhaps they would rebrand themselves under a new name and logo. Regardless of what they intend to do, Celcom and Digi have assured that they would prioritise minimising any potential service quality impact to customers while delivering the undertakings specified by the MCMC.

01/12/2022

Earlier this week, Great Wall Motor (GWM) finally launched the Ora Good Cat—easily the most anticipated electric vehicle of 2022—in Malaysia. It grabbed the headlines with its seriously attractive pricing, immediately making it the cheapest EV in the country. The cutesy design, high level of standard specification and eyebrow-raising range claims have also garnered attention, and you can take a closer look at the car in the video below.

There are two variants of the Good Cat being offered in Malaysia—the 400 Pro and 500 Ultra, the numbers corresponding to the claimed range. Pricing is as follows:

Ora Good Cat 400 Pro – RM139,800

Ora Good Cat 500 Ultra – RM169,800

These figures include a five-year/150,000km warranty, an eight-year/180,000km battery warranty and five times’ free service. Amazingly, the car also comes with a 7kW AC wallbox charger to be installed at home, on top of the usual 3.5kW three-pin slow charger.

Both models get a electric motor at the front that produces 141hp and 210Nm of torque, getting the Good Cat from zero to 100km/h in 9.3 seconds; top speed is electronically limited to 152km/h. The difference between the two is range—the 400 Pro has a 47.8kWh battery claimed to be capable of 400km of range, while the 500 Ultra’s larger 63.1kWh battery is said to enable the car to travel 500km on a single charge.

However, the range claims are a little optimistic, as GWM uses the outdated NEDC cycle instead of the stricter WLTP cycle used nowadays. In reality, the Pro’s range is somewhere around the 300km mark, whereas the Ultra is capable of about 400km at best.

Both models are capable of up to 6.6kW of AC charging through a dedicated wallbox charger, taking eight hours to fill the battery of the Pro and ten hours for the Ultra. They can also support up to 60kW of DC fast charging, enabling you to charge the Pro from 30 to 80% in 32 minutes and the Ultra in 40 minutes.

The Good Cat’s looks are as adorable as its name, with its rounded headlights and body and the optional contrasting roof; the car also features distinctive taillights hidden in the rear glass, as well as stylish 18-inch alloy wheels. The car comes in four colours, including Coral Blue, Hamilton White, Sun Black and Mars Red, the latter only available with a black roof. The Ultra can additionally be had in two exclusive colour schemes—Verdant Green with a white roof and Hazel Wood Beige with a brown roof.

Inside, the Good Cat is just as stylish, with a suede-covered dashboard, a Mercedes-like widescreen display panel, Mini-style chrome toggle switches and quilted door panels. All models come with leather upholstery in black, with the exception of the Ultra variant painted in the special colours, which come with matching two-tone interiors.

As standard, the Good Cat gets keyless entry, a buttonless quick start system, single-zone automatic climate control, a seven-inch instrument screen, a 10.25-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a 360-degree camera system and even a panoramic glass sunroof. On top of that, the Ultra adds a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory and massage functions.

The Good Cat also comes with lots of safety features as standard, including six airbags, stability control, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go and lane centring assist. There’s also a Wisdom Dodge System (WDS) that will give more space when passing lorries and other large vehicles.

The extra kit on the Ultra is relatively minor and includes Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK), Lane Change Assist (LCA), blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and rear collision warning. The car also adds front parking sensors in addition to the standard rear sensors, along with an automated parking assist.

TikTok used to be just the app where Gen Z kids can post videos of them dancing to, but since then it’s blown up to be one of the biggest social media platforms out there, with over a billion users worldwide. That however has brought some unfortunate trends such as the rise of racially charged content during the lead up and days after the recent general election.

Plenty of videos begin popping up on TikTok apparently inciting a potential repeat of the May 13 riots—a racial riot that had happened following the 1969 general election. The police had since released a statement calling for people to not cause trouble or threaten national security using social media platforms. TikTok for their part had also begun taking down May 13-related videos that violated their community guidelines.

Kenyataan Media

TIGA (3) KLIP VIDEO AMARAN RUSUHAN 13 MEI BERBAYAR: MCMC DAN PDRM TELAH PANGGIL TIKTOK BERI PENJELASAN. pic.twitter.com/t5KmBaMi7Z

— MCMC () November 30, 2022

However, it seems that TikTok is not out of the woods yet, as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) together with the police have called up TikTok Malaysia’s management to provide further explanation over the May 13-related videos. Specifically, it seems that the issue appears to be that at least three of the videos that went viral were paid for, meaning that they had the ‘paid partnership’ label on them, which implies it was paid for by others to sponsor the video.

According to Malaysiakini, of these three videos, one of them showed a scenery of a field and some trees, along with a caption implying the return of another May 13 incident. Another had old newspaper clippings from the May 13 incident itself along with a caption that had a hashtag showing support for Perikatan Nasional, while a third falsely accused DAP politician Lim Kit Siang of inciting racial tension and insulting the police.

More needs to be done by these social media platforms to control harmful content, as they control the content and information millions of Malaysians see and consume everyday. It’s not just TikTok either, as other major platforms like Facebook are often used also for promoting sponsored posts that are typically scam ads, like ‘free VPN‘ or ‘free Bitcoin’ sponsored posts.

The MCMC added that in the meantime the public can also play a role in ensuring such content doesn’t go unchecked. Users can do their part by not sharing and spreading these videos as well as not uploading them onto other social media platforms. Instead, the public can report them to the authorities via their 1800-188-030 complaint hotline, the MCMC WhatsApp channel at 0162206262, email them at [email protected] or the MCMC complaint portal which you can access here.

30/11/2022

Following the launch of Gentari’s 350kW DC Super Charger at X Park Sunway Serene, the company is offering free EV charging for a limited time starting tomorrow, 1st December until 15th December 2022. This gives EV owners the opportunity to experience faster DC charging especially for vehicles with an 800V architecture.

Vehicles such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (72.6kWh) and KIA EV6 (77.4kWh) are rated to charge from 10-80% in just 18 minutes with a 350kW DC Charger. The Porsche Taycan (79.2kWh battery) which also uses an 800V architecture can charge from 5-80% in just 22 minutes.

Charging KIA EV6 from 50-90% takes 15 minutes.

Take note that not all vehicles can take advantage of the 350kW DC charger. Some EVs may have a maximum DC fast charging rate of 150kW, 100kW and even 50kW. The charging speeds also vary on the current state of charge as the charging rate tends to drop significantly after hitting the 50% mark. When we charged an EV6 from 50%, we got 173kW and it gradually drops to 63kW when it reaches close to 90%.

Besides the 350kW DC Charger, the X Park charging hub also offers 180kW DC chargers, 22kW AC chargers and 7kW AC chargers. The free charging promo is applicable to all chargers on the site. This is also the first EV charging hub to obtain an EVCS (Electric Vehicle Charging System) license from Energy Commission. This allows Gentari to charge based on kWh instead of time, which is a more efficient way to charge.

After 15th December 2022, customers can activate and pay for the EV charging at X Park using the Setel or JomCharge app. According to Gentari, 350kW DC charging will be charged at RM1.20 per kWh while 180kW will be charged at RM1.00 per kWh. Meanwhile, all AC charging will be charged at RM0.55 per kWh.

30/11/2022

Google, along with its video platform YouTube are undoubtedly some of the biggest websites out there, with billions of people everyday using Google and YouTube to get their information. However, it’s also unfortunately been a hotbed for misinformation and fake news.

Google and YouTube knows this of course; the former even revealed that more people than ever were looking up the topic of misinformation last month according to their Google Trends data. As such, the two giants have announced a USD 13.2 million (RM58.9 million) grant to the International Fact-Checking Network to launch a new Global Fact Check Fund, which in turn will support a network of 135 fact-checking organisations across 65 countries, covering over 80 languages.

“The Global Fact Check Fund will help fact-checkers to scale existing operations or launch new ones that elevate information, uplift credible sources and reduce the harm of mis- and disinformation around the globe,” – Olivia Ma, Managing Director of Global News Programs and Ecosystem at Google and Brandon Feldman, Director of News and Civics Partnerships at YouTube

Google and YouTube added that the Global Fact Check Fund will begin in early of next year. Fact-checking groups will be able to use the fund to incorporate new technologies, optimise their verification tools, create and expand digital footprints as well as increase their ability to drive audience engagement. This is the single largest grant given by Google and YouTube for fact-checking and is their latest step in fighting misinformation.

In the meantime, Google and YouTube note that they’ve already added in plenty of fact-check features on Google Search, Google News and YouTube as a simple way of getting information from independent fact-checking groups. These include fact check tools on YouTube, Google News and Google Search, as well as a Fact Check Explorer which searches through around 150,000 fact checks from different publishers across various topics.

When you search for something on Google, you might’ve seen an ‘About this result panel’ too, which lets you see additional context regarding a search result even before you visit the web page. You may also find a breaking news panel in YouTube search results following a major news event as a way to show you more information regarding developing news stories from sources that follow Google News’ content policies.

It’s nearly Christmas now, and if you have a close friend or family member who’s a huge gamer at heart, you might want to check out this new piece of merchandise from Microsoft: a hoodie designed not for gamers themselves, but rather for their… controllers?

You heard that right, the Microsoft Xbox Gear Shop has now added the Xbox Mini Controller Hoodie to their catalog. It’s literally what its name implies, a miniature hoodie that snugly fits your Xbox controller, complete with holes for its, uh, arms to pop out of. According to Microsoft, it’s made out of 100% polyester material, and will be a great accessory for when you want to cozy up with a nice warm hoodie but don’t want to let your controllers feel left out.

The Xbox Mini Controller Hoodie comes in either white or black colourways, with the latter also having green accents to it. You’ll also find the Xbox name printed across the front of the hoodie while the back has the Xbox logo instead.

The Xbox Mini Controller Hoodie is priced at RM115, and it will actually ship to Malaysia. However, if you were planning on getting this as a Christmas gift, do be warned that Microsoft will only be shipping it out by mid-February or next year, meaning that your miniature hoodie will likely only arrive on your doorstep by March of next year. It’s also worth mentioning that shipping to Malaysia will cost you another RM78 in shipping fees.

If you do want to get one of these for yourself (or maybe for me), you can do so by heading to its product page here.

30/11/2022

This post is brought to you by Luno.

This year, cryptocurrency investors in Malaysia get to choose up to nine digital assets to invest in, with the latest two approved coins by the Securities Commission being Cardano (ADA) and Solana (SOL). These new investible digital assets are now available on Luno, Malaysia’s leading digital asset exchange.

The introduction of Cardano and Solana provides fresh opportunities for new investors to explore the world of cryptocurrency and seasoned ones to expand their portfolios. However, like any other new cryptocurrency coins, it is highly recommended that you first learn the basics before investing.

So, are you ready to broaden your cryptocurrency horizons? Read on to find out more about Cardano and Solana.

Cardano (ADA): One of the leading networks for building and operating decentralised applications (dApps)

Dubbed the next-gen Ethereum, Cardano uses the ‘proof-of-stake’ model to verify transactions and activities on its network. In other words, validators are able to validate transactions by staking Cardano’s native token, ADA, and be in the running to receive more ADA as rewards.

Cardano’s supporters believe that this transaction validation model makes the network faster and more energy efficient, as large amounts of computing power are not required in its creation. On top of speed and sustainability, ADA has a capped supply of 45 billion, meaning no more ADA coins will be created once this amount is in circulation.

Like Ethereum, Cardano enables the development of dApps and allows developers to build and deploy smart contracts on top of its blockchain. However, what is different with Cardano is that its blockchain is designed to be more scalable and efficient. In addition, Cardano emphasises a research-driven approach to enabling applications on its network, a method believed to help its adoption among cryptocurrency users.

Solana (SOL): A speedy, low-fee network for dApps

Solana is another contender for the Ethereum throne. Its fast and scalable network has allowed for a booming development of dApps, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and decentralised exchanges. Solana is unique because it solves one of blockchain’s primary weaknesses: transaction speed.

To date, Solana is widely recognised as the fastest cryptocurrency network, able to accommodate up to 50,000 transactions per second. It does this by verifying transactions through the proof-of-history model, which records the passing of time into the blockchain ledger. This process provides a historical record of a transaction taking place at a specific time.

As a result, the Solana network is much faster than traditional blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum, contributing to reduced network congestion and low processing fees. Such low costs and high speeds were projected to enable Solana’s scalability to compete with centralised payment processors such as Visa and Mastercard.

5 differences between ADA and SOL: Which one should you invest in?

On the surface level, Cardano and Solana share some similarities — both support dApps, fast transaction processing speed, low fees, and excellent scalability. However, there are differences worth paying attention to, so you know which one meets your cryptocurrency investment goals. To help you make an informed decision before investing in a digital asset platform like Luno, here are the differences between Cardano and Solana:

30/11/2022

Gentari, the subsidiary of Petronas, has launched the first public 350kW EV supercharger in Southeast Asia. This is the fastest EV charger in Malaysia capable of charging an electric vehicle from 10-80% in just 18 minutes.

The first site is at X Park, Sunway Serene which has a total of 10 EV charging bays. This includes three bays for 350kW DC charging, two bays for 180kW DC charging, two bays for 22kW AC charging and three bays for 7kW AC charging.

At the moment, there are several EVs that can take advantage of the faster 350kW DC charging. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and KIA EV6 with an 800V architecture can charge from 10-80% in just 18 minutes with a 350kW charger.

What’s interesting is that Gentari’s new public EV charging site at X Park is the first in Malaysia to receive Energy Commission’s Electric Vehicle Charging System (EVCS licence). This allows the charging stations to charge by kWh instead of time, which is a more efficient way to pay for EV charging based on actual charging input. Effective 1st December, 180kW DC costs RM1.00 per kWh while 350kW costs RM1.20/kWh. Meanwhile, all AC chargers will cost RM0.55/kWh.

29/11/2022

It was reported recently that a database containing nearly 500 million WhatsApp phone numbers was put on sale on a hacking community forum. Meta, the company which owns WhatsApp, has denied the allegations and insisted there was no evidence of a recent data breach.

A Meta spokesperson told SCMP that the report by Cybernews was speculative and based on “unsubstantiated screenshots”. The person said Meta took allegations about security breaches of its services very seriously and had taken immediate steps to further look into the claims made. The person added that while the phone numbers may be associated with WhatsApp accounts, they didn’t include other user information.

Without elaborating further, the Meta spokesperson said they have no information about how the list of phone numbers was collected. They added that there are many ways that such a list could have been compiled.

List of “leaked” phone numbers according to CyberNews

As reported by CyberNews, a database of 487 million WhatsApp user is being sold online which include over 44.82 million users in Egypt, 32.3 million users in the United States, 11.67 million from Malaysia, 3 million from Singapore and 130,331 from Indonesia. From the looks of it, this information appears to come from a previous data leak involving 500 million Facebook users which were reported last year.

Breakdown of users from alleged Facebook Security breach reported in 2021

If you refer to the list of the alleged Facebook data breach in 2021 above, it also lists the same number of users per country including 44.82 million Egypt users, 11.67 million Malaysian users and 130,331 Indonesian users.

Responding on the matter, Facebook said back then that the data was previously reported in 2019 and they patched the vulnerability in August of the same year. The company even issued a press statement saying that its systems were not hacked but the data was obtained by scraping using its contact importer tool prior to September 2019. It added that scraping is a common tactic that uses automated software to lift public information from the internet which then can be compiled and sold in online forums.

Facebook said scraping data using features that were meant to help people violates their terms and they have teams to detect and stop these behaviours. Although they have “addressed” the issue, the company admits that they can’t always prevent data sets like these from recirculating online. It advises users to perform regular privacy checkups to ensure their settings are correct including restricting certain information on their profile and enabling two-factor authentication (2FA).
