Shari Ulrich (https://facebook.com/ShariUlrichMusic ) is an award-winning singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and educator whose career spans over five decades, 26 albums, and multiple JUNO Awards. In 2025, she placed in both the Canada (Folk) and Folk categories of the Talent Is Timeless annual contest with her poignant song The Sweater.
“Oh, there is always a story,” Shari says — and The Sweater is shaped by the quiet, devastating presence of dementia, something she notes is “woven through all of our lives with friends and loved ones.” The song doesn’t reach for drama, instead sitting gently with memory, loss, and recognition slipping away — a restraint that makes it deeply resonant.
Shari’s path to songwriting was intentional. Though she began as a performer in bands, something never felt right. “I wasn’t comfortable singing other people’s lyrics. They didn’t fit me.” That realization pushed her toward a solo path — and into songwriting she trusted as a calling. One of her earliest songs quickly became a successful single, confirming her instinct: “I knew I should be writing my own songs.”
Alongside touring and recording, Shari has taught songwriting at Humber College, University of British Columbia, and the VSO School of Music, mentoring generations of writers. Her work has earned deep recognition, including Songwriter of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards.
When she learned she’d placed in the Talent Is Timeless contest, her response was immediate: “This was so affirming!!” She values the community’s supportive atmosphere, where experience is seen as an asset.
Her advice to songwriters over 50?
“Be yourself. It’s your superpower.”
