Rainforest on B.C's Pacific coast is home to the Kermode bear, also known as the "spirit bear," as well as black and brown bears. The elusive Spirit bear is a black bear with a recessive gene that makes its fur appear a creamy yellow. They're shy and do not like to share their territory with the much bigger grizzly bears. This mother climbed a tree with her black cub the moment she scented her big neighbour. We observed the grizzly pass by. It was only after a few hours, when the danger was long gone, that the mother spirit bear and her cub decided to climb down and go back to fishing in the river.
